Jarvis Cragstone forecloses on an elderly couple in order to sell their worthless farmland to the United States Government for atomic tests. An atomic weapon is detonated and its aftereffects cause the scarecrow to grow and gain awareness. It heads for town where it menaces the Cragstone until he coughs up the money he cheated the couple out of, and then it heads off looking for them. It finds them sleeping in the fields as the radioactivity is wearing off and leaves the money nearby. The old man and his wife find the money and the inert scarecrow and notice that it now has a smile on its face.
