History

Origins[]

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s history largely mirrors that of its Earth-616 counterpart.

S.H.I.E.L.D. was an American spy agency created after World War II. It was led by veteran spy Nick Fury, with advanced weapons and gadgets designed by industrialist Tony Stark. S.H.I.E.L.D. was primarily occupied with fighting the Cold War and terrorist groups such as Hydra and A.I.M. for much of its early history. As the mutant population grew however, S.H.I.E.L.D. was asked to confront the "mutant epidemic", despite the refusal of Nick Fury.[1]

In time, Fury realized that the organization had become compromised, and destroyed it from within. He rebuilt it with certain safeguards in place to ensure it did not lose its way.[1]

Mutation of Humanity[]

Following the mutation of humanity, global anarchy erupted. This was followed by a global meat shortage, leading to widespread famine. With society rapidly collapsing, S.H.I.E.L.D. were called in to restore order. Setting up shop in New York City, they began cracking down on the population, leading to widespread dissatisfaction with the superhero establishment.[1]

Simultaneously, former supervillain Norman Osborn unleashed a plan to bring America under his own control. Using the Bloodstone files, he created a parasite known as Hydra. Convincing the public that the Hydra were aliens who had launched an invasion of Earth, he began uniting the disparate superhuman forces of the country under his leadership. S.H.I.E.L.D. later learned that Osborn had created Hydra, but before they could make the information known, Osborn unleashed Hydra on S.H.I.E.L.D., downing their Helicarrier and destroying the organization.[1]
