—Mysterio[source]The Summoner is a silent balance to this world. They have helped some, attacked others, always without a word exchanged. They "free" many, only to recruit to their team. They empower some beyond comprehension, and ignore the needs of others. They are the singular most destructive force I have ever witnessed.
History
Contest of Champions: Book 1[]
The Summoner was taken to Battlerealm by the Collector to compete in the Contest of Champions for the prize of the ISO-Sphere as Earth's representative. Unlike their opponent, Kang the Conqueror, who controlled Champions using the ISO-Spell, the Summoner was recognized for collaborating with their Champions.[8] As the Summoner maintained a winning streak over Kang's Champions, the Collector unleashed Thanos from his crystal in the Conqueror's favor. When the Titan proved insusceptible to Kang's control, he formed an alliance with the Summoner under the pretense of saving the Multiverse from Kang. Following Kang's subsequent defeat and elimination, the Maestro revealed himself to the Summoner as the benefactor behind the Contest.[9] The Summoner then amassed victories over the Black Order and later Ultron, transitory substitutes for Kang until Thanos succeeded his place in the Contest. Although Thanos staked his victory against the Summoner for the opportunity to directly challenge the Maestro, he was overpowered by the Summoner's Champions and returned to his crystal.[10]

The Collector reveals the Maestro to the Summoner.
The Collector grew fond of the Summoner, who had far surpassed his expectations for the Contest.[8] While he ran the Contest in the Maestro's absence, the Collector trusted the Summoner on numerous missions, such as taking down Ultron's infestation,[11] recruiting rogue Champions,[12][7] eliminating Symbioids,[1] and locating Joe Fixit's fight club.[13] The two formed a rebellion against the Maestro after Ant-Man warned them that he was refining ISO for a sinister plot. The Maestro knew of their betrayal when he returned and threatened to use his newborn Infinity Stone against them. The battle between the Summoner and the Maestro was interrupted by Thanos, who had been rereleased from his crystal as a reinforcement. Thanos overpowered the Maestro and usurped the Genesis Stone from him, embarking on a quest to create more Infinity Stones.[1][14]
When the Maestro retreated to Battleworld, a Cosmic Civil War ensued between two factions with opposing strategies for dealing with the vulnerable Collector and escaping the Battlerealm. The Summoner first fueled the conflict by picking sides, but later defected to find the reclusive Civil Warrior, who helped put an end to the fighting.[15] To assure the Contest's advancement, the Collector backed M.O.D.O.K.'s experiment in unleashing ISO-infused Terrigen Mist across the Battlerealm, threatening mutantkind into a rebellion quietly backed by the Summoner.[16] The atmosphere was purified by Jean Grey using the Phoenix Force, but she had to be stopped by the Summoner after developing megalomania. Her sacrifice resulted in her body undergoing a unique type of ISO-based Terrigenesis, giving birth to the Evolution Stone in time for Thanos to seize it.[17] Between the threat of ISO-Terrigen, the Grandmaster returned and began challenging the Collector's dominion over the Contest, marking the beginning of the Elder's War.[4]
