S.P.I.N. (Super-Power Inhibiting Nanobots) are a technology designed by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a means to restrain or cancel the powers of super-powered individuals.

History

S.H.I.E.L.D. had originally developed inhibitor collars for incarcerating prisoners at Prison 42. Working with the Initiative, S.H.I.E.L.D. succeeded in miniaturizing the devices and loading them into Adamantium-tipped darts. The S.P.I.N. darts can penetrate the epidermis of nearly any superhuman being and neutralize their abilities. They are DNA-coded and each dart is specially designed for a specific target. The production of S.P.I.N. technology costs approximately $500,000 per dart. In certain situations, special counter-agents may be applied which will reverse the S.P.I.N.-tech's effects.[1]

They were first deployed against the She-Hulk when she broke ranks from S.H.I.E.L.D. shortly following the Civil War.[1] Refugee mastermind Amadeus Cho discovered the means of burning nanotech out of her system.[2] Tony Stark later armed his Hulkbuster armor with S.P.I.N. darts and used them against the Hulk when he returned to Earth at the onset of World War Hulk, though they proved completely ineffective against him.[1] During the early days of the 50-States Initiative, War Machine provided Camp Hammond trainee Komodo with a S.P.I.N. ejection system and sent her out to sanction Boomerang, Shocker, Hydro-Man, and Spider-Man. She tried to use the weapon against Spider-Man, but he managed to outfight her and escape.[3]

At least one sample of the S.P.I.N. technology was stolen by Hydra, with unknown consequences.[1]
