Amazing Spider-Man #112

After dropping off the Gibbon at the local hospital, Spider-Man resumes his search for Aunt May. After avoiding a number of criminal activities to continue his search for his missing Aunt, Peter eventually gives up looking for her as Spider-Man. After returning to his apartment, he changes back to Peter Parker and goes to the Bugle. There he finds that Jameson has spun Spider-Man's lack of involvement breaking up crimes as a sign of cowardice, and Jameson presses Peter to take more pictures or have a freeze put on his regular pay for the Bugle. On his way out of the Bugle, Peter gets his condolences from Betty Brant. Outside, he breaks up a fight between two boys, over whether or not Spider-Man is a coward. Peter then learns that Mary Jane and her Aunt Anna have been out looking for May as well.

When Anna points out that May's handwriting appears forced, it gives credence that May's disappearance might be linked to several recent kidnappings. Peter decides to go into action as Spider-Man and seek out the kidnappers, whom he had encountered earlier. He tracks down one of the goons, and when he questions him he learns that other than a phone call from his employer, he has no other information about the people he's been hired to kidnap.

Spider-Man recognizes another kidnapper in a group of crooks trying to break into a warehouse. Fighting them off, he finds that one of them has super-strength. However, he fights them off and finds that they were wearing a mechanical harness to boost their strength. Taking it, Spider-Man decides that it's an important clue. Before he can look into it, he's suddenly confronted by Dr. Octopus, the mastermind behind the scheme who is sick of Spider-Man once more meddling in his affairs.

Synopsis for "To End in Flames!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Thor #177

While seeking to escape the destruction of Asgard at the hands of Surtur, Loki and one of his followers escape to Earth, however they find that Surtur's coming has also caused environmental upheaval on Earth itself, leaving Loki to hope that his hated half-brother finds some way to defeat Surtur.

While back in Asgard, the royal city has been set ablaze by the coming of Surtur, prompting Thor to gather an army of warriors to fight against the fire demon. They rally together and with the help of Thor's mystical hammer, they break through the flame barrier erected in front of the city and charge toward Surtur himself.

While elsewhere, Balder and Sif seek out Igron, an evil mystic loyal to Loki who was responsible for sending Odin to the Sea of Eternal Night. They tell them of their quest to free Odin and explain that if he does not help them all of Asgard would be destroyed by Surtur. While back in the battle field, Thor takes on Surtur on his own, and despite his great strength and mystical hammer can only do so much as keep Surtur on the defensive, but the noble Thunder God refuses to give up.

While back at the lair of Igron, Balder agrees to being transported to the Sea of Eternal Night, even though that he will rapidly wither away within moments of his arrival. Although growing rapidly old with every passing moment, Balder manages to make it to the capsule where Odin slumbers and manages to awaken the All-Father, who proclaims that his Odinsleep has ended.

In the battle field, Odin is finally joined by the other warriors who lend their might to keep Surtur back, even going so far as dropping a large meteor on him, but to no avail. As the battle rages on, Balder brings Odin back, however at a terrible price: Balder has aged to frail and deathly state, however Odin is alive and well and vows to Sif that he can restore Balder anew.

Finally back in the battle field, Thor's army is unable to stop Surtur, and are forced to use their last resort: A frost gun, however this only momentarily staggers Surture, who uses all his power to blast everyone into unconsciousness, leaving only Thor the only one standing to face him. However before the battle can continue, Odin arrives and banishes Surtur back to his realm. When the reviving warriors realize who saved them they all raise their weapons in honor of Odin.

Synopsis for "A Separate Reality"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Doctor Strange (Vol. 2) #2
Doctor Strange Vol 1 2 001

Within the abandoned subway station that is his lair, Silver Dagger continues his attempt to cleanse Clea of her black faith in the Sorcerer Supreme by using his weapon to decapitate a wax mannequin of Doctor Strange and reminding her that the real Strange is just as dead. While taking a break from Clea's conversion, Silver Dagger uses the Eye of Agamotto to see what's been done with Strange's corpse but is instead shown that Dr. Strange is alive somewhere.

Meanwhile, flying through the realm of unreality within the Orb of Agamotto, Doctor Strange is lost, unable to find the center of the Orb or anything else. In an attempt to gain the knowledge he needs to save himself, Strange begins meditating and soon theorizes that the fact that the Caterpillar he met seemed too much like "[[Wikipedia:Alice in Wonderland|]]" is an indication that his unconscious mind can affect what occurs within the Orb. Suddenly, Strange is attacked by a flying creature that rips his astral body from his mortal form and, despite an attempt by a "Silver Surfer" to prevent it, Strange's soul is sucked within the creature's guts where he encounters the heads of multiple previous victims of the Soul-Eater. Although told by the captive souls that they are all doomed to provide eternal psychic energy for the creature, Strange's astral form instead choses to disrupt the creature's brain, causing it to fly out of control and crash onto the ground. With the Soul-Eater now unconscious, all of the souls that it had held captive are able to escape. Strange's soul meets the Silver Surfer who doesn't know him and Strange soon realizes that this Surfer is an image of the Orb that has been shaped by Strange's memories. Finding that his mortal form has walked off on its own, Strange and the Silver Surfer follow its tracks to the castle of the White Queen, the Surfer's sovereign. Within the castle, the two find Strange's body sitting at a table where the Knights of the Rostrum, beings who resemble the Defenders and other allies of Strange, are having a tea party.

After Strange reunites his astral and physical bodies, the group is joined by their queen who has the appearance of the Valkyrie. When Strange tries to leave, the heroes take this as an insult and try to kill him but Strange manages to overcome them. Spotting the now-conscious Soul-Eater approaching, Strange fears that it may steal the souls of his fallen foes but the queen and the Silver Surfer explain that, for the same reason that the knights reacted so murderously and unpredictably, they are in no danger from the Soul-Eater because none of them have souls. Only Strange, among all who abide with them now, has a soul and thus only he can live or die. This revelation causes Strange to realize that only he has a choice and that, while he has squirmed and twisted like a fish in the net of unreality, his true foe has always been the fisherman, Death. When Strange declares that he has only postponed his fate and that it must still be awaiting him at the center of the Orb, the queen offers him her stallion to take him there. Strange realizes that, now that he knows what he's actually seeking, all of the beings within the Orb that he affects know, too.

As Strange flies off towards the center of the Orb astride an unreal Aragorn, Silver Dagger has been showing Clea that, although his schemes may have gone somewhat awry, Strange is actually suffering a fate worse than death. Reassured that Strange is still lost, Silver Dagger is now ready to begin on Clea.
