History

The man known as Superioribus began his life as a normal person on Earth-TRN1046,[11] but at some point early in his life[3] suffered some kind of change that gave him superpowers, transforming him into a mutant.[12] When he was only four years old, his mother noticed how he swallowed the baby bottles in one slurp (It is unclear whether he swallowed the contents of the bottles, or the bottles themselves).[13]

At some point, Superioribus moved to an apartment in the top floor[9] of a residential building apparently in Barcelona, and certainly in Spain. He acquired a debt of 80,000 pesetas (the currency used in Spain at that point) with a creditor called Martínez,[7] and he also discovered the secret origin of comic-book artist Jan.[11] He decided to begin a career as a superhero[14][4] and was in contact with the local police commissioner Dolan and with several superheroes,[4] thou not all of them felt a great deal of respect of Superioribus: Thor believed Superioribus to be a foppish amateur who could not compare with Thor himself,[15] and other superheroes were unhappy at Superioribus wanting to hog the fame and the cameras: In his debut, Superioribus congratulated Christmas to the readers of Comics Forum in a card, while other superheroes stood in line, waiting for their turn and believing that Superioribus was taking too much time.[14] As a way to offer a differential factor with over other 50,000 superheroes active on Earth-TRN1046, Superioribus was not only accessible by phone[4] and videocall (which was state-of-the-art technology at the time),[9] but he also gave out coupons whenever he was summoned to fight evil.[4]

Eager to help those in need, Superioribus devoted his time to stop super-robberies, especially when all the police took vacation at once and left the superheroes in charge of everything (without even warning the superheroes) for more than a week, with Superioribus sometimes up to ten crimes stopped in a single day; Superioribus and another superhero asked Commissioner Dolan for an explanation, only to discover this.[4] Superioribus had several accidents that affected the general population,[16] "borrowed" Capitán América's shield without asking,[13] and accidentally murdered his own girlfriend by hugging her with superstrength; devastated, he was arrested by the Civil Guard[17] but apparently was released soon afterward.[7] After a blunder when he was hired to paint the lines in the highway to Beijing,[17] Superioribus focused on fighting crimes. He discovered that several so-called supervillains could be dealt with without excessive violence and made friends with a giant Transformer Robot, with whom he played chess.[9]

Becoming a successful superhero, Superioribus was frequently called to fight monsters and villains,[5] with the common people giving him homage ceremonies,[8] asking him for interviews in the press,[3] and at least once giving him the kick of honor in a soccer game.[8] Every now and then, he still caused a mess: when he, Antorcha Humana and Iron Man tried to stop the same crime at once, they collided and their powers affected each other causing a nuclear-like explosion that was far worse than the crime they were wanting to stop,[18] but even then he made peace with Capitán América and the two of them, along with Spiderman, met at a café bar in Barcelona to exchange funny stories about their work, Superioribus remembering having drilled the whole Earth to answer a call for help in Japan quickly - then having to cover the hole.[19]

Superioribus was also approached for other activities that made use of his superpowers, like a person who wanted him to construct an office building, but this was no good as Superioribus did not really know how to do that.[6] On a holiday in Italy, Superioribus straightened up the Leaning Tower of Pisa.[20] Back to Spain, Superioribus was approached by a small kid who naïvely believed to be stronger than Superioribus because, as requested by his older relatives, the kid always finished off his Tola-Tao and La Vaca Que Llora teso; Superioribus armwrestled the kid and let him win so as to promote his lifestyle. Many other superheroes reprimanded Superioribus for discreting the whole trade and accused him of looking for Tola-Tao and La Vaca Que Llora sponsorships.[21] Superioribus did have other brushes with superheroes (as the superheroes frequently had brushes with each other when they argued with each other about who was to stop a given crime), but Superioribus imposed his authority whenever appearing on his own titled stories (Thou Superioribus never appeared elsewhere).[10] These professional troubles were easily forgotten when Superioribus met other superheroes at the Sainz Laurenz parade of models showing new designs for superhero garb.[22]

Defeated by Tauro.

Defeated by Tauro.

Less succesful later, Superioribus was soundly defeated by Tauro in the latter's attack at a police station, because Superioribus couldn't but laugh at Tauro's outlandish outfit, then Tauro took his chance to attack Superioribus.[23] Soon afterward, an already embarrassed Superioribus asked for Thor's help; Thor wanted to disgrace Superioribus for good, triumphing where Superioribus had failed and humilating Superioribus to retirement - only to discover that Superioribus wanted Thor to hammer a nail on a wall.[15] However, next Superioribus soundly defeated the electrical mutant Electro, who was on a rampage to defeat every superhero in the world and decided to start with Superioribus.[24] This was a boost to Superioribus' popularity, where he was asked for autographs[25] and he became so well-known that people could not dress up as Superioribus for a costume party, because the other attendees believed it was the real Superioribus.[26]

Having overcome the death of his previous girlfriend,[17] Superioribus noticed superheroine Gata Sombra in a nightclub and tried to flirt with her, finding her both attractive and, as a fellow superheroine, sharing interests with him. At that point, however, Gata Sombra's intangibility power was uncontrolled and Superioribus discovered he could not even touch her; disgusted at this development, he excused himself and left, purportedly to fight Seven Electric Mutant-Eaters.[27]

Superioribus later found Electro again entering a café bar, and got ready to fight him once more - but Electro said he was there to surrender to Capitán América, as his electric consumption had become higher than he could afford.[28]

Attributes

Powers

While Superioribus considers himself a normal guy,[11] he was described as a mutant[23] and has shown the following superpowers:

  • Flight: Superioribus can fly in atmospheric environments, apparently using small jets from his soles.[4] He has claimed to be able to be able to go around the world faster than the speed of light several times.[1]
  • Medium Awareness: Superioribus knows he is a comic-book character[10] and can address the readers directly.[14][11] He can use this ability to his benefit by finding the title in the story and showing that he is in his own story, so he's to be the protagonist.[10]
  • Superhuman

    Strength:
Superioribus has superhuman strength, with limits that have not been measured. Not only able to punch and damage the outer shell of giant robots,[17] he has also proven to be strong enough to press coal until it turns into a diamond[7] and he claimed to be able to do origami with the thickest steel sheets, to squeeze concrete, and to even move the moon.[1] Once, he digged a hole from Spain to Japan to go there in a straight line fast.[19] He frequently uses giant versions of commonplace items,[25][31] as he's prone to damage the typical version of these.[32]
  • Superspeed: While on foot, Superioribus can reach the speed of a competition motorcycle.[13]
  • Supervision: Superioribus has several kinds of supervision, including telescopic vision to see from afar,[33] some kind of vision-based attack that can melt iron,[1] and X-ray vision[34] which can have a harmful effect: If he tries to look at the cards that another person holds, these cards may combust.[35] Ironically, he suffers from an unrevealed eye condition that requires him to wear contact lenses.[34]
The combined used of Superioribus' powers allow him to perform certain "power stunts". Once, he used several powers to construct an office building in one single day (thou admittedly he lacked the architectonical know-how to construct a suitable office building).[6] When he cried, he cried so much that he created a small pond in little time.[17]

Abilities

Superioribus is a good fighter, both against giant-sized superhumans,[17] and against groups of normal humans using advanced weaponry.[4] He keeps himself in shape with gymnastic exercises including barbells, jump rope and breathing techniques.[36] Among all the superheroes, he is the only one giving coupons, demonstrating some business savvy,[4] thou he was also in debt.[7]

Superioribus can play chess.

Superioribus can play chess.

Superioribus has also demonstrated a knowledge of working regulations[37] and he can cook,[38] fish[31] and play chess.[9] He seems to have read Don Quixote as he quoted it once (the quote he said, however, is not from Don Quixote, but attributed to Napoleon I of France).[24]

Weaknesses

Superioribus is a superhero only because he lacks the skills and capacity to be anything else.[3]

Superioribus' powers do not give him an immune biology: He was known to drink beer[5] up until drunknness.[11] He also had a sight condition that required him to wear contact lenses (that may be damaged when he uses his X-Ray vision).[34] His own superpowers disappear whenever he washes his costume with biodegradable detergent Tinxan; it is unclear whether the powers come from the clothing or he has the power but requires the costume to not be so immaculately clean.[39] Even at his best, he can be stung by a wasp and develop a pimple.[40]

Superioribus lacks several skills that may be learned. He is a bad card player, frequently cheating with his X-ray vision;[35] he got himself into debt for 80,000 pesetas with a Señor Martínez;[7] and he lacks the knowledge of architecture to construct a building, even thou with his powers he is physically able to construct one on his own.[6] He does have his own photo camera which he can operate,[20] but is unable to take a photo with an unfamiliar camera.[32] Due to the uncontrolled use of his superpowers, he was arrested once for murder.[17]

As a superhero, Superioribus was afraid of Electro,[24] thou he was a committed hero and faced his fears.[24][28] When confronting Tauro, however, he was defeated because his emotion got the best of him: He found Tauro's costume so ridiculous, that he laughed incontrolably, which led him to be distracted for Tauro's attack.[23]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

Superioribus can communicate with the authorities either using a device on his left wristband[4] or a monitor set at his home.[9]

He also owns a photo camera he takes out when doing tourism.[20]

Superioribus had a toolbox, but it was stolen at some point.[15]

Transportation

Superioribus has small jets on the soles of his shoes, that activate when he flies.[4]

Notes

  • Superioribus was created at the request of Spain's Comics Forum chief editor Antonio Martín in 1987, as Forum was publishing Marvel Comics[41][42] and Martín wanted to include a Spanish product in to complement the American material.[41] Martín recruited comic-book author Jan,[42] who had succeeded with superhero parody Superlópez, to create the character and the stories as writer and artist.[43]

in 1984,[41] Jan had created "Emeterio González" as a character for a few unpublished pages called either "Origins" or "Superioribus".[41][44] Jan made use of these pages as conceptual sketches for the new character.[44] In this story, Jan hires a man to apparently portray Emeterio as Superioribus' secret identity, who will transform by inserting a finger up his mouth, covering his nostrils and blowing hard - This was discarded for the Forum release, in which Superioribus does not have a secret identity, and has a different uniform. In the origin story, Superioribus is immediately approached by a robbed jewelry owner, the Minister of Defense and a man wanting to take him to the President of the United States, but Jan insists that they are still in the introduction and cannot do superheroics yet.[2]
  • To differentiate Superioribus from Superlópez, Jan decided that Superioribus would use only one-page gag stories, in black and white, and using tramas, as an explicit homage to artist Will Eisner's The Spirit.[41][44] The 1999 and 2018 compilations included full-color covers.

Trivia

  • Superioribus probably lives in Barcelona, Spain or at least in the region of Catalonia: Several posters seen around him were in Catalan language;[35][35] a car had the plate B-3030 (with the "B" standing for having been registered in Barcelona);[34] when he played with airplanes, the staffers mentioned they needed to do the "puente aéreo (shuttle service) a Madrid", meaning they were in the only other stop of the puente aéreo, El Prat Airport of Barcelona;[38] and once in a bar he coincided with Jan, who lives in Barcelona.[19]
  • Superioribus is a fan of:
  • Superioribus enjoys flying commercial airplanes as if these were paper ones,[38] and he decorates his home with Picasso-style paintings.[15]
  • Superioribus found Gata Sombra attractive - until he noticed she's intangible.[27]
  • Superioribus has Thor's personal telephone, even if Thor does not think highly of Superioribus as a superhero.[15]
