Although Hydra has many leaders, its highest position is the Supreme Hydra[1] (or Supreme Leader[2] or Hydra Supreme[3]). This is typically Baron Strucker, who had quickly usurped Ryuji Hiraoka.[4] After Strucker's death on Hydra Island, Hydra was fractured and many lesser Hydra leaders attempted to take power, with some claiming to be the "Supreme Hydra" but never reaching the level of Baron Strucker.[5] Following Strucker's return,[6] the Gorgon briefly took control by killing a clone of Strucker,[7] while the real Strucker was missing.[8] Some time after the real Strucker's next demise,[9] the Red Skull began to see the beauty in Strucker's organization and slowly gained power over Hydra,[10][11] but he was then supplanted by the Hydra Captain America because the Skull was not truly Hydra and merely "stole" it.[12] Captain America was known as the "Hydra Supreme" during Hydra's takeover of the United States.[3]
