History

T'Chaka was the king of Wakanda, a technologically-advanced yet secretive country in Africa.

T'Chaka (Earth-199999) from Black Panther (film) 001

As the Black Panther

After a conflict in Lagos resulted in the deaths of several Wakandan humanitarians, T'Chaka accompanied his son, T'Challa, to a United Nations conference in Vienna to ratify the Sokovia Accords, which would bring the Avengers under close monitoring by the organization. During the conference, T'Chaka was killed in a bombing, seemingly caused by Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, but was actually caused by Helmut Zemo, disguised as Barnes, in his plan to split the Avengers. As a result, T'Challa inherited the mantle of King of Wakanda and the role of its protector, Black Panther, vowing to track down and kill Barnes to avenge his father.[2]

Notes

Trivia

  • T'Chaka's Black Panther suit was designed by Andy Park. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler wanted it to have more clothing, for which Park researched on African wraps, tunics and pants that could go along with the aesthetic of the Black Panther suit. A sash designed by Rodney Fuentebella was incorporated into the torso. One of the elements used to differentiate this suit from T'Challa's was the visible tactical vest, which was influenced by Black Panther's look in the Black Panther: The Man Without Fear! comic series.[4] An alternate rejected look for T'Chaka's suit traded the additional pieces of cloth for a cape, which would've been a call-back to Black Panther's caped outfit from the comics.[5]
