Tír na nÓg is an island neighboring Avalon in the Otherworld.[1] Both islands belong to the Kingdom of Avalon. The fairy isle[2] is known as the home of the Tuatha de Danaan, the Celtic Gods, and of the fae people. Tír na nÓg corresponds to the territory of Ireland and Northern Ireland in the Earth realm.

As many deities before them, the Tuatha de Danaan decided to create their own God Realm, named Tír na nÓg, in Gaea's Inner Plane of Avalon because they wished to be closer, but separate from their worshippers.[3]

The first generation of Tuatha de Danaan, the children of the High Chieftain Iarbonel and Gaea, dwelled in Tír na nÓg. It is said that the Tuatha apparently draw power from Tír na nÓg itself, meaning that they are weaker in the Earth realm.[4]

While living in Tír na nÓg, at least two of the four cities inhabited by Tuatha de Danaan were ruled by sons of Iarbonel: The Dagda ruled Murias,[5] and Nuada ruled Finias.[6] Following Iarbonel's death, the Tuatha left their cities in Tír na nÓg and traveled to Earth in approximately 1896 BC. The Tuatha inhabited Ireland until 350 AD, when they decided to return to Tír na nÓg.[4]

In modern times, when the Warriors Three inadvertently killed the shapeshifting Giant Holth, his father King Gnives demanded as retribution a list of items (all extremely difficult to acquire), including "Slaughter" (the Spear of Lugh) from the Tuatha de Danaan.[7] Accompanied by Thor, the Warriors Three subsequently traveled to Tír na nÓg via a sidhe (fairy mound) in Ireland and battled the demigod Cúchulain for the spear.[8]
