After Phil Coulson died just before the battle of New York and was subsequently resurrected, he was implanted with memories of a recovery on a beautiful beach in Tahiti, replacing the real memories of the procedures that revived him.

These memories were implanted because, after being revived, Coulson had lost "the will to live." Coulson was also implanted with a trigger response which caused him to say "it's a magical place" anytime someone mentioned Tahiti.

In reality, Coulson discovered that his recovery took place in a secret facility called The Guest House as part of Project T.A.H.I.T.I.. After visiting the facility, Coulson was able to overcome the trigger response, now answering that Tahiti "sucked".[3]
