It is 616, has been referred back to and even had other characters from the strip turn up in one of his stories, in a flashback that showed the young Lumpkin in the town he delivered post to in the strip, and is referenced as Willie's first appearance in his modern handbook entries. True first appearance

Willie's first appearance wasn't in FF #11, but in an old comic strip that Stan wrote years before. Should we change that? Thanos6 07:12, June 15, 2011 (UTC)

What comic was that? Same company?--edkaufman (talk) 09:54, June 15, 2011 (UTC)

  • It was a syndicated strip, like Garfield or Blondie, that only ran in 1960, written by Stan and drawn by Dan DeCarlo. It was distributed by some company called "Publishers Syndicate," which is now part of King Features. After the strip failed, Stan recycled the character in FF. Later appearances have even used Willie's history from the old comic strip; I'm not sure if Marvel actually bought the rights or if they're just using them and damn the legalities and King Features doesn't care. I do know that some strips were reprinted in a Marvel Age but I don't know if they were credited to the syndicate or not. Thanos6 10:15, June 15, 2011 (UTC)

      • From what I can tell, that series continued at Timely, which is part of the same continuum. In fact, the ish given as his first appearance is the first that appeared at Timely (Blackstone #2). But, as I said, it's cetrainly worth adding under notes.--edkaufman (talk) 13:30, June 19, 2011 (UTC)
