History

Tandy Bowen first appeared as a the student president of Midtown High School giving an interview to a news reporter following classmate Flash Thompson's kidnapping by the mecenary group known as the Wild Pack.[1]

When the tsunami Ultimatum wave occurred and flooded New York City, Tandy wanted to help those who survived the wave. However, her mother, who blamed mutants for the catastrophe, forced Tandy to come with her, telling Tandy that they had to "help themselves". She apparently hated mutants soon after, calling an anti-mutant task force to arrest Kitty Pryde.[2]

Tandy Bowen's first appearance

Tandy met the student council president of Forest Hills High School Tyrone Johnson during the national student council Hamptons' weekend, although they wouldn't start a friendship until they encountered one another in Westwood Mall's Food Court when Tyrone was working as the assistant manager of a food stand called Burger Frog. Tyrone ("Ty") and Tandy started dating some time after.[3]

New powers[]

When Tandy and Tyrone were attending the prom night, a speeding delivery truck struck their rented limo, and the two went into comas. Tandy and Tyrone were put in the same hospital room, where a malicious company known as the Roxxon Brain Trust saw the opportunity to use the two teenagers as guinea pigs in their experiments to create super-soldiers. Roxxon smuggled the unconscience Tandy and Tyrone out of the hospital, covering their tracks by having the teenagers declared dead and manipulated the hospital to falsely declare their bodies as accidentally cremated. Roxxon then performed experiments with dark matter on Tandy and Tyrone, giving them both unique superpowers. Tandy in particular was given powers to control physical manifestations of light, while Tyrone's body became a black void that could consume anything inside of it. The experiments that triggered the super powers in the teenagers caused them to wake from their comas, and upon waking they fought off their captors and escaped Roxxon's holding.[4]

Tandy and Tyrone started looking for answers as to what happened to them while taking retribution on the ones who they believed were responsible for their state. They began tracking down people from a list of names they had stole from Roxxon, believing each person to be in league with the company. Three days later, one such person they tracked down was another super-powered teenage test subject of Roxxon named Bombshell, who they tried to apprehend but were surprised when Bombshell didn't seem to know who they were.[4]

While on the rooftops of Manhattan planning what to do next, Cloak's and Dagger's attention was caught by a battle between the mercenary Taskmaster and heroes Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Bombshell. Tandy and Tyrone soon joined the fight, and the villain was incapacitated after Tyrone abducted him inside his body with his new powers. Tandy and Tyrone formed a fast friendship with Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Bombshell, and the five teenagers proceeded to team up and take down the illicit Roxxon Brain Trust together.[5]

Shortly after forming their new friendships, Tandy and Tyrone adopted the names "Cloak & Dagger" given to them by the media and they were devastated to find that their families had moved away from their homes. At this same time, a cosmic entity known as Galactus invaded the planet Earth in an attempt to destroy it, wreaking havoc upon the U.S. states of New York and New Jersey. Cloak and Dagger tried to fight against the cosmic intruder, and ended up helping other super heroes save many people from the destruction in the city. [6]

Young Ultimates[]

In the aftermath of the Galactus invasion, which led to the death of the heroic leader Captain America, the superhero team known as the Ultimates was disbanded. However, Spider-Woman announced at Captain America's memorial that she intended to continue the legacy of the deceased leader in the form of a team of young heroes, which she called the Young Ultimates. This team was comprised of the same friends who had taken down the Roxxon Brain Trust togther, but with the addition of fellow teenager Kitty Pryde.[7]

The Final Incursion[]

Together with the X-Men, Dagger, Cloak and Kitty Pryde witnessed as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Triskelion fell at the hands of several heroes who hailed from a parallel universe in retaliation to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s own attacks against their Earth. This clash of realities was the consequence of a phenomenon known as an incursion which ultimately caused both universes to collapse and come to an end together with their inhabitants.[8] Since then, the universe was recreated. It can be presumed Dagger returned to existence as well.[9]

Notes

  • Before her first appearance, Tandy Bowen's name appeared several times in issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, e.g. on graffiti saying "Tandy Bowen for President." In Ultimate Spider-Man #78, her name appears on a stall in the girls' restroom at Midtown High School, saying "Tandy Bowen bites!" A separate piece of graffiti underneath this suggests that she only "bites" Flash Thompson.
