History

Tebbel was a small, cold planet that existed somewhere in the Milky Way galaxy. At some point after life had appeared and evolved, the Celestials arrived and conducted experiments on the dominant native race. These experiments resulted in the creation of an offshoot race that was genetically unstable, similar to the Deviants of Earth.

Since their unstable genetic code acted to diminish their numbers, the Tebbelian Deviants had to use special measures to sustain their species. They used magic to resurrect their dead, and began a controlled breeding program designed to eliminate their unstable DNA complex and thereby create genetically-stable Deviants.

Over twenty-five thousand years ago, that breeding program had produced Nirvana, a female Deviant who was genetically stable. At that time, the planet was populated by an array of righteous people who were mostly fishermen. The planet had also been divided into special zones for those who differed too greatly to live harmoniously together.

During Nirvana's lifetime, Tebbel was invaded by the forces of Lord Tantalus, a Deviant who had conquered his homeworld of Arqa and was now spreading his rule to other planets. When Tantalus enountered Nirvana and her father, Khult, in the Building of Knowledge where the two of them worked as astronomers, he tried to use his death touch to kill her and was shocked when she survived.

Due to the fact that she was the only person who had ever survived his death touch (and thus could have children with him), Tantalus fell in love with Nirvana and she, to protect her world, promised to return his love. She and Khult returned with Tantalus to his homeworld.[1]

Tebbel presumably remains one of the six worlds controlled by Lord Tantalus.

Notes

  • Despite being similar to Earth's Deviants, the genetically-unstable people of Tebbel prefer not to refer to themselves as "Deviants."
  • Although it is known that the Celestials created a Deviant-like race on Tebbel, there has never been any mention of them creating an Eternal-like race there as well.
  • The original species out of which the genetically-unstable offshoot race was created has never been depicted. Also, the story did not make it clear if they still survived on Tebbel when Nirvana lived there.
  • This planet's name has only appeared in-story twice but each time it was spelt differently, first as "Tebbel" and then as "Tebble."
