This is a great template, very helpful, organizes information nicely and automagically. Cool Roygbiv666 17:53, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Glad you like it! I just wish we could make more parts of this wiki easy and pretty like this one.

Is it possible (well, anything's possible) to do something similar to the Comics Volumes, so it grabs all the issues that exist, associate an image, and then lists them automagically?
Roygbiv666 23:02, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Yea, but it won't put anything that ISN'T in the category, son any that aren't templated, or aren't made won't show up, they'll just be skipped.

What's your point? ;-) It would be the way things should be - create an article (templated) with a cover, it's automagically included in the property Comics List.
Roygbiv666 22:25, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
The point is, that as it is now, we can insert links to potential comic pages that don't exist yet, and with this system, we wouldn't be able to do that. So numbering could easily go from 1 to 23 to 105 if we were seriously lacking in some of the pages we need. It just seems to me that we would want to have redlinks created for the pages in-between so that someone could come in and fill those in when they saw the need. Has this been brought up in the forums?
Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 14:58, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, not to be too facetious, but wouldn't most people be able to figure out that if the list shows issue 7,8,9,11 that issue 10 is missing and needs to be created? Wouldn't this create less work?
Roygbiv666 15:50, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Yea, it is less work, but it also does use DPL, which is a huge server drain (I've heard). It's maximized to be the least drainy as possible, but it's still about three times more processing for the server than for a page not using dpl. I dunno, it's out there, and we could start using it all over, but I get the feeling that if it gets too prevalent, the Wikia people may come talk to us.

I see, I didn't look at the guts of the template. It's funny, over on DCDP, The Paradox is getting annoyed that someone keeps creating all these Comic entries using the Comic Tempalte, but no content. Seems like the opposite.
Roygbiv666 02:32, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
For the DPL example below, does it only put a processing drain on the server when someone goes to this page, or is it running all the time? If it's just when someone goes to a page, it shouldn't be too bad a thing to use.
Roygbiv666 14:13, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, here are the *official* Wikia reasons for their DPL disdain: Help:DynamicPageList. The example below is cached, by virtue of the allowcachedresults=true being in the template, so I'm not sure how much of a resource hog it is. I would imagine that it only searches the category when you're saving the page, and when you're actually viewing the page it's on, it doesn't look up all the images and links at that point. So it shouldn't be too bad, depending on how much we use it. The real answer: no one knows how much this would impact our server or the servers connected to ours if we installed this on every comic list page. We don't know until we'd try. :)

Update: I made a template to do just this. You specify the category to build the gallery from, and it does the rest. An example is shown below.

I think there's a bug causing the gallery to skip over some titles in a month. Example on,_May In the "Comics Published in May, 1953" section, I'd expect to see issues of "Battle Action" and "Battle" in between "Adventures into Weird Worlds" and "Battlefield". Those issues do appear below in the "Pages in category "1953, May"" section. There are a few more in the bottom section missing from the top section. Can anyone tell why?RaijinK (talk) 01:30, October 26, 2014 (UTC)
