Quote1 You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me. I thought by eliminating half of life, the other half would thrive. But you've shown me, that's impossible. And as long as there are those that remember what was, there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be. They will resist. Quote2

History

Origins[]

This Thanos was a temporal divergence of his Earth-199999 counterpart, sharing his history up until 2014, while he was still working closely with his daughters Gamora and Nebula as part of his Black Order to find the Infinity Stones so he could wipe out half of all life across the universe and restore balance of resources. He was cold, cruel, arrogant, and sadistic, believing himself to be a hero doing a great deed for the cosmos, and had no remorse or sympathy for what he felt he had to do.[2]

Battle for the Future[]

"Impossible."

While on a mission to locate the Power Stone, Nebula began glitching and showing her new memories she hadn't experienced. Thanos located and captured a second Nebula, and using his Nebula's electronics to show him what this other Nebula knew, he learned that she was from 2023 of the prime timeline, after the prime Thanos completed his mission and erased the Stones from existence to stop the Avengers from undoing his damage. Nebula had been sent back in time to this divergent reality via the Quantum Realm to retrieve the Power Stone, as had the others to other realities to retrieve the other Stones, all in an attempt to undo the damage Thanos had done to their world.

Even with the revelation that his prime counterpart was slain by the Asgardian Thor Odinson, Thanos was overjoyed by the knowledge of his inevitable victory, and felt that to preserve it, he needed to go to their future, retrieve the Stones for himself, and reset the universe to his will so no one would feel obliged to stop him. Using the prime Nebula's time travel technology, Thanos sent his Nebula to the future in her place, and had her use the Avengers' time machine to bring him and his armies to the future, which she did so just after Bruce Banner had used the Stones to restore the dead to life.

Battling the Avengers

Once there, Thanos sent his minions to retrieve the Stones for him while he waited in the middle of the wreckage of their facility, destroyed by Thanos' warship. He was confronted by the trio of heroes leading the Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor Odinson. After gloating about his victory, his power, and his new plan, Thanos engaged the trinity in combat, but despite their best efforts, they were no match for the Mad Titan and he tired them out easily, nearly killing them. However, just as Thanos began assembling his armies to completely overwhelm them, the sorcerer Doctor Strange conjured several portals to assemble an army of heroes to battle Thanos and his forces, from their fellow Avengers to the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Masters of the Mystic Arts to the forces of Wakanda, this new army assembled under Captain America's leadership and finally battled Thanos and his troops.

Thanos accepts defeat

As the fight raged on, Thanos located the Stones, now assembled in an iron gauntlet, and attempted to retrieve it, pushing his way through Wanda Maximoff and even the powerful Captain Marvel to try and get at it, and even ordering his warships to fire on his own troops to try and stop his opposition. Eventually, he got his hands on the gauntlet, but Iron Man used his nanotech to grab the Stones from it and used them himself, reducing Thanos and his armies to dust, just as his prime counterpart had done to half the population of the universe.[2]

Legacy[]

Iron Man's use of the Stones to kill Thanos saved the universe, but it also cost him his own life, and a grand funeral was held for him. The Nebula of Thanos' timeline was killed by her prime counterpart, and his version of Gamora ended up turning on him during the battle, seeing how far his cruelty towards her sister had gone. Meanwhile, Thanos' battle left much destruction and anger in his wake, and left Earth in particular in a state of political and criminal unrest for years afterwards.[2]
