History

Modified clones created by Thanos to determine the strength of possible foes or the reliability of possible allies. He used cloning, sorcery, and technology for these Thanosi.[1]

Ka-Zar

A low-level Thanosi sent to test the hero Ka-Zar[1] decided to seek power on its own,[2] but became trapped in a pocket dimension that he was investigating. Separated from his source of cosmic energy, he was only able to contact normal reality mentally through a genetically engineered creature called Consumption.

Consumption then contacted the Plunderer (brother of the Ka-Zar) to serve the Thanosi, and converted its own body into a gateway to the pocket dimension containing the Thanosi, destroying itself in the process. The Plunderer entered and contacted directly the Thanosi, who promised him rulership over a lifeless Earth. The Plunderer used the terraforming devices of the Antarctica paradise known as the Savage Land to begin to re-shape the Earth, a process which began to re-power the Thanosi.

The Plunderer was ultimately confronted by Ka-Zar, but not before the Thanosi managed to absorb the energies of the pocket dimension and the terraforming devices. Filled with power, the Thanosi began to affect the entire galaxy with his newfound primeval energies and opened various portals throughout the universe. The Thanosi and the Plunderer were forced to pursue Ka-Zar through rapidly shifting areas of the cosmos, as Ka-Zar had stolen the key for the terraforming machines' power. Ultimately, the Thanosi tired of the Plunderer and abandoned him on an unidentified world.

The Thanosi's strength, however, had been depleted and Ka-Zar managed to turn the tables on him by knocking him into an active volcano in the Savage Land. Destroying the key to the terraforming machines, the Thanosi leaped into the device, hoping to recover his source of power, as the device was destroyed by agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The Thanosi was apparently trapped once more in the pocket dimension.[3]

Soon, the Thanosi discovered a possible exit from the pocket dimension along the mystical ley-line nexus points. He mentally contacted the monstrous Hulk, who was anguished over the recent death of his wife Betty Ross. The Thanosi attempted to trick the Hulk into becoming a vessel for his mind, but was overheard at another ley-line nexus by Nate Grey. Nate attempted to convince the Hulk to refuse, and ended up locating the Hulk and battling him. The Thanosi then used Nate as his physical vessel instead as the Hulk attacked anew. In the course of battle, the mystical barriers that separated the two dimensions were shattered, freeing the Thanosi. Ultimately, the X-Man and the Hulk managed to exile the Thanosi to the pocket dimension yet again.[4]

Thor

Later, a higher-powered Thanosi was set against Thor.[1] Appearing in Asgard as it laid in ruins with many of its warriors defeated by the powerful Mangog, the Thanosi found an ally in Odin's aide, Tarakis, who helped him to obtain the apocalyptic Map of All-Ending from the All-Father. Already possessing the Chalice of Ruins, the Thanosi believed the two objects would help him to find the being known as the Designate. The Thanosi and Tarakis collected their other ally, Mangog, who had just defeated Thor, and traveled to the planet Rigel-3, home of a peace-loving race of thinkers and dreamers. Once there, the Thanosi teleported Mangog to the surface, and the hulking behemoth began to destroy everything in sight. The Thanosi demanded the Fire Gem, the next item required to find the Designate in order to stop Mangog's rampage. He was ultimately successful, although Rigel was nearly laid to waste in the process.[5]

Thor promptly traced the Thanosi's route, and allied himself with the Rigellians, Recorder 211 and Firelord, the former Herald of Galactus. Thr Thanosi and Mangog managed to collect the final items and captured the Designate, a woman named Tarene. As Thor and his allies battled the Thanosi and his allies, Tarene began to weep for her champion, Thor, an action that granted Thanos the power of Ragnarok. Before the Thanosi could truly begin Ragnarok, Thor killed Mangog and was given apparel to supply him with the Odin-Force. Thor and his allies battled the Thanosi once again. As the Thanosi fell, Tarene wept again for the lives of all those slain by him. As written, she flung her tears upon the fallen Titan, who burst into an all-consuming hellfire, seeming vanquished forever.[6]

Infinity Abyss

After considering the clones a failure for exhibiting nihilistic and destructive behaviors, Thanos scheduled them for recycling; however, a secret player blasted a hole in the roof of one of his hideouts' subterranean section, thus activating five of the replicants:[1] Armour, Mystic, Omega, Warrior, and X.[7]

These Thanosi then banded together to bring about the end of the universe and believed that they could do this by capturing Adam Warlock so he could direct them to the cosmic being Atlez, the Anchor of Reality, and his successor Atleza. By killing Atlez and his successor, the universe would come to end (this was actually a scheme created by Atlez to aid Adam in finding his successor Atleza).

X impersonated Thanos using a telepathic illusion and directed Pip the Troll to kidnap Adam Warlock as he was recovering from insanity on an alien planet.

X required information from Warlock, who previously made contact with Atlez. Gamora located the real Thanos, and with the aid of Warlock, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and Moondragon, killed four of the the Thanosi.

However, the final clone, Omega, had gone to Earth to kill Atlez's successor Atleza and destroy the Earth. Omega was prevented from doing so after being teleported with the heroes to a barren planet where they battled. Thanos transported the heroes back to Earth and had a fleet of alien mercenaries destroy the planet, killing Omega. This allowed Atleza to take Atlez's place as the Anchor of Reality and thus sparing the universe from destruction.[8]
