Description

Arriving in San Francisco, Eddie Brock tries to reconnect with his estranged father, Carl Brock, out of desperation and loneliness. He is rejected and forced to flee when the Venom symbiote -- which has disguised itself as a dog -- lashes out, but discovers he has a nine year-old half-brother named Dylan Brock. Later, Dylan seeks out Eddie and reveals that Carl is physically abusive towards him. Eddie tells Dylan about himself and agrees to help, but has a hallucination of Knull and passes out, vomiting blood. Eddie is hospitalized and The Maker arrives to analyze him, theorizing that his cancer has returned. However, in a mental confrontation with the symbiote, Eddie realizes that he'd never had a sister or an uncle, and that he'd never had cancer prior to bonding to the Venom symbiote, which had faked being braindead to gaslight him out of fear he would reject it. Eddie realizes that Dylan is in-fact his son -- unwittingly conceived when he and Anne were simultaneously bonded to the Venom symbiote -- and furiously separates from the symbiote with the help of the Maker, though he is knocked unconscious. Seeking to redeem itself, the Venom symbiote saves Dylan from Carl and delivers him to Eddie, before striking off on its own so that it can no longer destroy their lives.

Issues

  • "The Abyss" was originally going to be the first arc of Donny Cates' run on Venom, and would have begun with Eddie in a self-imposed exile. However, C.B. Cebulski advised him to reorganize the arcs so that "Rex" was first.[1]
