History
Originally seen alongside the Thunderbolts army during the superhuman Civil War, this Death Adder has also been seen alongside a new incarnation of the Serpent Society.
Death Adder started working for the Assassins Guild, and took part in an ambush with some of the Guild's top mercenaries when Deadpool raided the Guildhouse as part of an ongoing feud between him and the Guild. Before engaging the Guild's assassins, Deadpool threw a shuriken at Death Adder without looking and hit him in the head, killing him. Deadpool lamented the shot, claiming that he was aiming for Lord Deathstrike.[2]Attributes
Powers
- Amphibian: He was amphibious, able to breathe under the water by extracting oxygen molecules from the water by means of gills installed in his body. There was apparently no limit to the time that Death Adder could remain under water.[1]
- Tail and Claws: Death Adder's physiology was also transformed by means of a series of operations, giving him a tail and claws. The tail, which was around four feet in length. Death Adder's tail was connected to his nervous system, meaning he could control it like an extra limb.[1] Adder could use the tail to strike at great speed, since it could reach a speed of up to 60 miles per hour through the air.
- Toxikinesis: In addition, the tail was decorated with sharpened prongs, impregnated with a fast-acting poison that was of sufficient strength to be able to kill even superhuman victims like M.O.D.O.K. and Tigra. This poison was also in his claws. A single scratch can paralize a 200 pound man within 90 seconds.[1]
- Superhuman Durability: Death Adder's bone structure was modified with synthetic bone and tissue allowing him to survive the low temperatures and the high pressures of the ocean depths, enabling him to descend to depths up to 400 feet.[1]
- Superhuman Strength: His strength was also enhanced in order for him to be able to survive the pressure of the ocean and as a result he can lift 1 ton.[1]
- Enhanced Vision: A special membrane protected his retinas, to allow his eyes to adapt to the bluish-green light of depths up to 650 feet underwater.[1]
- Superhuman Speed: Death Adder could swim at speeds of up to 34,5 miles per hour.[1]
Trivia
- The character was created to replace the original Death Adder, Roland Burroughs, who had been killed by the Scourge of the Underworld, and to fill in the ranks of a revived Serpent Society. Burroughs was eventually resurrected by the Hood and remains a more prominent character than his would-be replacement.
- According to the Appendix to the Marvel Handbook, the new Death Adder was included in the script for Thunderbolts #104 (September, 2006), where he was to appear with an entire army of new members for the Thunderbolts. The character was excluded from the final art for the issue, but references to him and cameos were included in Civil War Files #1, Avengers: The Initiative #1, and All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z: Update #2. He eventually made his first full appearance in Nova (Vol. 4) #19, where he participates in a fight between the Serpent Society and the Nova Corps. In the issue itself, Death Adder is defeated by Fraktur.
