History

Born in El Centro, California, Thomas Samuels lost the use of his legs to a mutant strain of polio, so he started relying on a wheelchair. He regained his full mobility when he received superhuman powers from a benevolent alien, a member of an extraterrestial race who looked for worthy people to be granted such gifts. He started his super hero career as "Lectronn" by encountering a group of thieves which he seriously harmed, as he was still testing his powers.[2]

Lectronn continued honing the use of his powers, notably rescuing people during a clash between It, the Living Colossus and invading Stonians.[2] He eventually relocated to New York City, where he was active for many years. Tom almost attended Dollar Bill's "Defender for a Day" event, but was diverted when he helped Crimebuster and Janus the Golden Angel rescue bystanders from the debris of a cosmic crisis called "Star Waaugh."[1]

In his biggest public exploit, Samuels fought the Schizoid Man to a standstill for almost three hours. However, when the ranks of the Avengers and the X-Men were crippled by the Masters of Evil and the Marauders, respectively, Tom became discouraged from further pursuing a superheroic career. Retiring his costumed identity, he married his longtime crush, entertainer Mary Jo Besselo, and moved with her to Pennsylvania. In addition to formally adopting Amy Jo's son from a previous relatonship, Mathan, Tom conceived twin goys with her, Martin and Rider.[1] Additionally, Samuels became an English teacher.[2]

Years later, Tom and Mary Jo were visiting Ireland for their second honeymoon when the techno-organic creatures called the Vi-Locks wreaked havoc during a global crisis caused by the evil scientist Yandroth. Amy Jo was among the handful of victims assimilated into the Vi-Locks despite the efforts of the local super hero team, the Kinsmen. When Yandroth was defeated, the Vi-Locks vanished, including those they had assimilated. Tom was unable to help throughout the crisis due being out of practise, so he became grief-stricken at his self-perceived failure. Revisiting his super hero mantle, Tom re-trained himself and took to globetrotting, seeking out both knowledge to rescue Amy Jo and potential crises where he could offer his assistance and to redeem himself in his own eyes.[1]

Returning to New York in the midst of the superhuman Civil War, and while consulting with a few local heroes,[1] Lectronn was apprehended alongside Phone Ranger, Lightbright, and Wildstreak by Iron Man and Spider-Man for being in violation of the Superhuman Registration Act.[3] Samuels was detained in Prison 42 on the Negative Zone until a massive breakout orchestrated by Captain America and the Secret Avengers,[4] which led to the Civil War's final battle in the streets of Manhattan, during which Captain America surrendered.[5] Lectronn evaded the authorities afterward and escaped.[2]
