Synopsis for "A World Gone Mad!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Journey Into Mystery #113A World Gone Mad!
Thor has been on Asgard assisting Odin and his fellow warriors against the demons of Jotunheim, a battle they win very easily. After the battle is over, Odin asks Thor to abandon the Earth and return to Asgard full time, a request that Thor declines stating that he has much good still to do on Earth. This infuriates Odin, because the All-Father knows full well that Thor is still trying to find a way to reveal his true identity and win the love of Jane Foster, a plan which Odin harshly forbids.

Returning to Earth and changing back to his mortal guise of Donald Blake, Thor decides that regardless of the consequences, he must reveal his true identity to Jane Foster. Returning to his office, Blake asks Jane into his office and admits to her that he is really the mighty Thor. Meanwhile, in a city museum, scientists are examining the recovered body of the Grey Gargoyle. Once all the river mud is removed from his body the Gargoyle revives and turns his examiners into stone and escapes and is eager to resume his quest of obtaining immortality, something he believes he can achieve through Thor's hammer.

Meanwhile, in Asgard, Loki happens upon Odin's throne room just as Odin learns that Thor has revealed his true identity to Jane Foster. Odin then decides to strip Thor of his godly powers before storming out, leaving Loki to plot a way to get final revenge against his hated step-brother. On Earth meanwhile, Don Blake attempts to prove his claim by tapping his cane and is horrified to find that his powers are gone, leaving Jane to think that Blake has been working too hard. Just then the Grey Gargoyle smashes through the window seeking to learn where Thor is. Donald and Jane manage to flee the building, however the Grey Gargoyle is not far behind them.

Back on Asgard, a gathering of the Gods fears the worse for Thor and decide to try and help the Thunder God. When Balder tries to travel to Earth to save Thor he is stopped by Loki, who uses his newfound authority to send all the dissenting Asgardians out on patrol, unaware that one of their numbers has actually secreted down the Bifrost Bridge unobserved.

While on Earth, Donald Blake and Jane Foster continue to flee the pursuing Grey Gargoyle by any means necessary, however even with the unknowing aid of the mysterious Asgardian, the Gargoyle continues his chase. When Jane is knocked out and the Gargoyle grabs Blake (slowly changing him into stone) Donald hears his mysterious helper advise him that his powers as Thor have been restored for the next thirty seconds. Tapping his cane, Blake is surprised to find that it's true, and is transformed into Thor, reversing the effects of the Gargoyle's touch.

Thor quickly defeats the Gargoyle by utilizing both the magics of his hammer and a live wire from a lamp post to fuse the Gargoyle's stone limbs together. Leaving the scene, Thor -- his thirty seconds elapsed -- reverts back to Donald Blake. His benefactor returning to Asgard -- revealed to be Honir the Hunter -- reports back to Odin, who had sent Honir to aid Thor.

Believing that Thor has learned his lesson, Odin decides that he will restore his son's powers much to Loki's chagrin. Back on Earth, Donald Blake feels his powers returning and understands that he is not to revel his identity again. Going back to the now reviving Jane, Donald Blake explains that he was only delirious from too much work, and that this little adventure has restored his sanity. Believing that she's been rescued by Donald Blake instead of Thor, Jane begins to show affection towards the doctor.

(originally printed as When the Grey Gargoyle Strikes!)
Lamenting over the fact that Odin still will not allow him to marry Jane Foster because she is a mortal, and how she thinks that Donald Blake "betrayed" Thor (in the previous issue) to the Cobra and Mr. Hyde, Blake changes into Thor and confronts Foster, pretending to be looking for his alter ego because he had heard of his "betraying" him. Foster, in a panic, tells Thor not to seek revenge on Blake, as he was likely frightened and that she still loved him. Thor, "convinced" not to seek "revenge" on Blake, leaves Foster to bask in the joy of knowing that Jane Foster loves his alter ego.

Meanwhile, a transcontinental plane from France lands at JFK airport and a lone man exits the plane. When an airport official boards the craft to check on the other passengers, he finds that they have all been turned to stone.

This man is revealed to be Paul Duval, a young chemist from Paris who one day, while being rushed to complete a chemical solution, spilled its contents on his hand. Duval soon found that his hand had turned to stone, and consequently, anything he touched would also turn to stone, including himself (although unlike his future victims, when he turned to stone he was not immobilized). Duval soon began a crime spree, turning jewelers and bank guards into stone and stealing what he wanted. Growing bored with his wealth, Duval learned about Thor's recent battle against the Cobra and Mr. Hyde. He decided to steal Thor's immortality, figuring the power must come from Thor's hammer, and traveled to America to do so.

The flashback ends when the Duval's cab arrives in the center of New York City. Duval turns the driver into stone and waits for Thor to take the bait. Thor eventually overhears a radio report about the rash of reports of people being turned into stone. Investigating the most recent report of the cab driver, Thor uses his Avengers priority to have the stone cabbie taken to Donald Blake's office. As Don Blake, Thor examines the the stone cabbie and determines that within the hour he will turn back to normal. He vows to Jane Foster that he will learn why these people are suddenly turning to stone.

Meanwhile, Duval has donned a costume and turned his body into stone, calling himself the Grey Gargoyle. He goes to Dr. Blake's office in the hope that Thor will appear. He attacks Blake and attempts to turn him into stone; however, Donald manages to escape to the roof of his office and change into Thor.

The two titans battle in the streets, where the Grey Gargoyle causes a nearby gas pump of Marvel Oil to explode, knocking Thor's hammer out of his grasp. He fails to lift Thor's hammer and turns its owner into stone when the thunder god attempts to grab it back. The police soon arrive with a flame thrower and chase the Gargoyle away. While the police are busy, the stone statue of Thor falls over and his hammer strikes the ground, causing him to change back to Donald Blake.

Blake dares not change into Thor until the Gargoyle's stone spell wears off. He thinks that it would last for twenty-four hours, and decides to defeat the Grey Gargoyle in his mortal guise. Using his connections with the Avengers, Blake obtains a projector camera from Stark Industries that allows him to project a 3-D image of Thor. Mounting the camera to a motorcycle, Blake travels around the city, projecting an image of Thor in an attempt to flush out the Grey Gargoyle.

The Gargoyle takes the bait, but soon figures out what Blake is attempting to do and chases after him. Blake then tricks the Grey Gargoyle into driving off a pier and into the Hudson River, where the current of a passing boat drags him out to sea, and he sinks to the bottom.

The next day, changing into Thor, the thunder god stops by Blake's office. He learns that the stone cab driver changed back to normal and Blake is being hailed as a hero, the story of the Gargoyle's defeat making the front page of the paper. Satisfied, Thor flies off into the sky.

Our story begins with Thor rescuing a child from being run over by a speeding truck. On his patrol of the city, Thor receives the telepathic summons of Doctor Strange for his aid. Arriving at Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, he finds Doctor Strange passed out on the ground. Reviving him, Thor learns that Strange was severely weakened after stopping Baron Mordo from casting a spell on the city. Strange loses consciousness, prompting Thor to call for an ambulance and resume his mortal guise of Dr. Blake.

At the hospital, Blake preforms surgery on Doctor Strange. At that moment, Odin attempts to contact Thor telepathically, to ask him to aid his fellow Asgardians in battle. Blake chooses to ignore Odin's summons as he is in the middle of a surgery. This prompts Odin's wrath, causing an electrical storm on Earth that knocks out the power to the hospital. Blake is determined to continue the operation, and in Asgard, Odin leads his warriors into battle without Thor's aid. With Odin gone, Loki transforms himself into a bee and flies past Heimdall and crosses the Bifrost Bridge to Earth.

Later, after Doctor Strange's surgery, Blake checks up on his patient, who offers to repay Blake for saving his life. Blake returns to his office, where Jane Foster shows him to an old man with a lame leg. The old man trips when standing up to greet Blake, so that he keels over and the two drop their canes. Getting back up and grabbing one of the canes and handing the other to Blake, the old man suddenly states that he is well, tossing the cane in his hand out a nearby window. The old man then transforms into Loki, who uses a magic mist to put Jane Foster to sleep. Blake attempts to change into Thor, but soon realizes that during the confusion, Loki had switched canes, and the one that would change him into Thor was tossed out the window. Loki grabs the unconscious Foster and leaps out of the window, taking her hostage.

Blake, unable to find his cane, attempts to contact Odin, who doesn't answer his summons. He then enlists the aid of Doctor Strange, who uses his ectoplasmic form and mystic amulet to find the cane. Blake locates it near the harbor, where a bunch of hobos are using it for a fishing rod. Doctor Strange's ghost form scares the hobos into giving Blake back his cane. With Strange gone, Blake turns into Thor and begins his search for Loki. Meanwhile, Odin returns from battle and, feeling he was too harsh on his son, attempts to contact him again. Thor snaps at Odin for not responding to his request for aid, and tells Odin to leave him be.

During his search for Foster, Thor runs into his fellow Avengers Iron Man, Giant-Man and the Wasp, who offer their aid. Thor turns them down, stating his quest is a private matter. He uses his hammer to locate Loki, who is hiding out in the Adirondack mountains.

Before confronting Loki, Thor contacts Doctor Strange mentally and asks him to use his magic to help save Jane from Loki. Confronting the god of mischief, Thor learns that Loki had banished Foster to Limbo and threatens to destroy her, should Thor attack. Thor battles Loki, until his foe knocks him into a pit that he set as a trap. Then Loki casts as spell that will kill Jane Foster and sends it into Limbo. However, his spell is blocked, due to a counter spell conjured by Doctor Strange.

Thor gets out of the pit and fights Loki into submission, forcing him to return Jane from Limbo. Just before Loki can attack again, a soldier from Asgard sent by Odin arrives and takes Loki back to Asgard. Odin contacts Thor and the two make peace. Thor flies back to the city with Jane, leaving Odin to wonder why his son still loves a mere mortal.

Dr. Donald Blake visits a local fair, where a statue honoring his Norse alter-ego is on display, along with statues of other heroes from the New York City area. He is flattered and even gets invited to visit the opening ceremonies.

Meanwhile, in a hidden craft (disguised as a floating log) in New York Harbor, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are attempting to locate the secret base of their foes the X-Men. Learning that their enemies are in New York somewhere, Magneto sends Mastermind, Toad, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch into the city to locate them. Launching them in a submersible craft, Magneto uses one of his new devices that causes many metal objects in the city to suddenly float in the air. Among the many panicked people witnessing the strange phenomenon is Don Blake, who -- after the abrupt end of the event -- seeks to locate its source as Thor.

Using his hammer to track the source of the power, Thor stumbles upon Magneto's hideout and confronts the master of magnetism. Thinking Thor is a mutant, Magneto offers Thor a chance to join him and enjoy his vast wealth. When Thor refuses, Magneto attacks, separating Thor from his hammer in a steel room long enough to cause Thor to revert back to his mortal guise.

As Donald Blake, he barely avoids all of Magneto's traps, until Magneto is distracted by a distress call from his minions, who are requesting assistance in a battle against the X-Men. Taking advantage of this free moment, Blake recovers his walking stick and changes into Thor.

Thor resumes his attack on Magneto, easily overpowering the foe, who manages to escape to a lower level of the craft where a Proton bomb is stored. Magneto is about to use the bomb to destroy Thor, but suddenly, he is stopped and chased out of the ship by the X-Men.

Thor observes Magneto escaping in a submarine with the X-Men in pursuit and finds the ship's escape hatch. He discovers that the X-Men saved his life by rendering the proton bomb useless. Thor exits the craft and uses his power over the storms to destroy the ship, then returns to the city.

Magneto eludes the X-Men and speeds off to rejoin his comrades, while back in the city, Thor resumes his mortal guise and pays a visit to Jane Foster. She feeds him supper and the two go out for a night on the town.

Synopsis for "Tales of Asgard: The Defeat of Odin!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Journey Into Mystery #110
(originally printed as Every Hand Against Him!)
While patrolling the city, Thor gets the ominous feeling that evil is waiting for an appropriate time to strike, little knowing that Loki has once again traveled to Earth, seeking revenge on the thunder god. Disguising himself as a mortal, Loki pays the bail for both the Cobra and Mr. Hyde.

Meanwhile, Thor returns to his mortal guise of Dr. Donald Blake and resumes his daily routine of tending to his patients, little suspecting his three most sinister foes are organizing together. In a hotel room, Loki reveals his true form to Mr. Hyde and the Cobra and orders them to defeat Thor on his behalf, using his magic to double their strength. Loki sends the two goons out to kidnap Jane Foster, telling them that this will aid in defeating Thor.

The duo tear a path to Donald Blake's office, where the Cobra snatches Jane Foster, prompting Blake to change into Thor and pursue his opponent. He finds the Cobra with Mr. Hyde and is about to attack when Hyde threatens to harm Foster. The two villains escape with Foster in a cab, telling Thor to return to that street corner in 24 hours to surrender his hammer, if he wants to see Foster alive again.

Meanwhile, Loki returns and directs Odin's attention to Earth, where he watches Thor allow the Cobra and Mr. Hyde to escape. Angered that his son has once again allowed his love for a mortal to interfere with his duties, Odin banishes Thor from Asgard.

Realizing that Loki has something to do with the events, Thor travels to Asgard and fights his way past Heimdall and the entire Asgardian army to confront Loki. He forces the whereabouts of Hyde and Cobra from Loki, when suddenly Odin enters the room and scolds Thor to disobey him. Thor apologizes and explains his situation. He asks Odin to help him save Jane by transporting him to her location. Odin does so, suspending his judgment over Thor's insubordination until his mission is accomplished.

Arriving at Mr. Hyde and the Cobra's hideout, he finds that the entire house is decked with numerous traps. Thor fights his way through them and gets into a battle with the now twice as strong Mr. Hyde and Cobra. At the battle's climax, Mr. Hyde causes an explosion that he believes finally kills Thor and leaves his body behind. Thor is merely stunned and revives shortly after and continues his search for Jane. He finds her in another room and finds that she has been mortally wounded in the explosion.

While Thor is distraught that Jane will soon die, Mr. Hyde is on his way to the very room with the Cobra to prove that he finally defeated Thor.

In a last attempt to keep Jane alive, Thor uses his hammer to create a time warp around the building to keep her alive, just as he is found by his two foes.

Synopsis for "The Stronger I Am, The Sooner I Die!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Journey Into Mystery #114
(originally printed as The Stronger I Am, the Sooner I Die!)
Thor battles a criminal who attempts to elude him inside of a modified bucket racer. Thor pulls him from the vehicle and throws him to the ground. Watching the melee from Asgard is Thor's evil half-brother, Loki. Loki decides to assist the criminal by teleporting a vial of poisonous vapors to the battlefield in the hopes of weakening Thor. The tactic fails however and Thor manages to capture the criminal.

Frustrated, Loki decides to strike at Thor in another way. He elects to empower an Earth mortal with the ability to defeat Thor. Loki creates a special serum and teleports it to Earth inside the water glass of a convict named "Crusher" Creel. Upon drinking the water, Creel feels himself rippling with power. He has the ability to absorb the properties of any physical material that he makes contact with. He begins causing a ruckus in the prison cafeteria, and the guards rush in and start shooting at him. Creel absorbs the impact of their bullets, and transforms into a man of solid lead. Using his weighted ball and chain, Creel smashes his way to freedom.

Back at his office, Donald Blake patches up an injured reporter named Harris Hobbs. Hobbs tells him that he is chasing a story involving a superhuman escaped prisoner. Blake grows curious and breaks off a dinner date with Jane Foster to investigate.

Blake changes into Thor and flies out towards the Black Mountain swamp area. There he finds Crusher Creel and the two pit themselves against one another. Thor's hammer strikes against Creel's iron ball, but to no avail. With each blow, Creel absorbs more and more of the Thunder God's strength. Thor creates a whirlwind hoping to blow Creel off his feet, but this too fails.

The reporter Hobbs reaches the scene and tries to help Thor by throwing sticks of dynamite at Crusher Creel. Creel mimics Thor's whirlwind and blows the dynamite back at him. Thor snatches Hobbs to safety before the sticks can explode.

Creel manages to escape and drives off in a stolen car. While gassing up the vehicle, he begins fantasizing about all of the things he can accomplish with his new powers. Creel destroys the gas station with his ball and chain, and then drives off towards a safe house.

Thor tracks him down and the two begin fighting once again. The fight continues for hours, with neither man showing any sign of slowing down. Suddenly, Thor's Asgardian ally Balder the Brave appears before him. He brings Thor to the Rainbow Bridge and tells him that Loki has gone after Jane Foster. Thor decides to abandon his fight with Creel, citing that Loki represents a more menacing threat. As the two Asgardians vanish, Creel, in his arrogance, believes that he has beaten Thor.
