Synopsis for "Who Lurks Beyond the Labyrinth!"

Upset about Jane Foster's condition, Thor is brooding in the rain on top of a building. When he calls out to All-Father Odin, begging for his help, and doesn't receive an answer, Thor angrily strikes the rooftop with enough force to shatter part of it, sending the pieces falling towards the street. Shocked to realize that he has endangered the pedestrians below, Thor manages to prevent any injuries by using Mjolnir to smash the falling stones to dust only feet above the heads of the mortals who had just realized that they were about to be hit. Thor has no idea that the Absorbing Man was on that street, stalking him while disguised by a trench coat and a hat.

Thor returns to Jane Foster's hospital room where the Vizier informs him that there's nothing he can to to prevent her from dying, just like all the other victims of the creature known as Fear have already died. He then mentions that Jane's only hope is the Runestaff of Kamo Tharnn that the Lady Sif and Hercules have gone on a quest to find.

Elsewhere, half a universe away, Sif and Hercules are on a world revolving around an ancient star, travelling through a long-dead city towards the Eternal Beacon which marks the location of the palace of Kamo Tharnn. Suddenly, they hear a voice that declares that their souls will be the penalty for trespassing even as it orders its subjects to seize both of them. The duo are then attacked by a small group of orange-furred creatures but, after easily defeating them, Sif and Hercules are instantly transported into a ruined and decayed throne room where they find themselves facing Kamo Tharnn himself. When Hercules reacts with anger, Tharnn uses his Runestaff to deafen the Olympian. Sif attempts to reason with Tharnn, explaining that they came to him in peace for his aid in saving the live of a woman who is loved by the one she loves, but Tharnn reacts angrily, calling her a fool and declaring that the power he possesses, the power that cost him his sight and the lives of all who once lived on that planet, is his and for his use alone. Seeing that the madman is refusing to help, Hercules attacks Kamo Tharnn and the two begin fighting. Now knowing that Kamo Tharnn will never give up his Runestaff, even for a short while, Sif realizes that they are going to have to take it from him, if they can.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the Absorbing Man, disguised as an orderly, enters Jane Foster's hospital room without being noticed by either the Vizier or the distracted Thor. He manages to touch Mjolnir and absorb its power, then reveals himself and attacks Thor, punching him through a wall and into the hospital corridor. After touching his ball and chain to give them Mjolnir's power, the Absorbing Man attacks Thor again and the two begin battling.

Back in the palace of Kamo Tharnn, Hercules, whose hearing has returned, manages to overcome the rays from the Runestaff that were killing him and strike Kamo Tharnn with a powerful blow that instantly knocks him out. Once Hercules has taken possession of the Runestaff, Sif says that they must leave before Kamo Tharnn awakens because his uncontrollable wrath will drive him to follow them to the ends of the universe.

Using magic, Sif transports herself, Hercules and the Runestaff back to Earth. Appearing in the corridor outside Jane Foster's hospital room, they are surprised to see that it is a shambles. They are greeted by the Vizier who explains the chaos by pointing to the street below where Thor is battling the Absorbing Man. Hercules wants to go and help Thor, but Sif tells him that there is no time because Kamo Tharnn may trace their path to Earth at any moment. Sif declares that, if Jane Foster is to survive, they must act at once, and begin the Spell of Revival.

Notes

  • The planet where Kamo Tharnn lives is not named in this issue. The revelation that Tharnn came there from somewhere else contradicts the previous issue's description of it as his homeworld, but this discrepancy will be resolved in Thor #335 when the planet, identified for the first time as Rus, is stated to be Kamo Tharnn's adopted homeworld.
    • That issue's story will also reveal exactly how Kamo Tharnn lost his sight, what really happened to all the other people on his planet and how he acquired the Runestaff.
  • Tharnn's planet is described as being half a universe away from Earth, in a galaxy that is as far from the Milky Way as Earth's Sun is from the Andromeda Galaxy. This means that the planet, at this time, cannot possibly be part of the Beta Scorpi star system because that star system is located within the Milky Way galaxy. The fact that Quasar #39 will state that Rus is in the Beta Scorpi star system will not be a continuity error because Champions #13 will have already established that Kamo Tharnn can (somehow) move his entire world through space. Apparently, this is something that he has done two or three times since his first appearance in this issue.
  • The orange-furred ape-like creatures who serve Kamo Tharnn will next appear in Champions #12 where Hercules will refer to them as "beast-men."
  • This issue is broken down into three chapters:
    • Chapter One: A Time of Waiting
    • Chapter Two: The Man Behind the Maze
    • Chapter Three: The Pathos and the Power
  • This issue contains a letters page, The Hammer Strikes. Letters are published from David L. Simons, Marilyn Sue Knapp, and Wilf Campbell. The letters page also contains a Series "A" Marvel Value Stamp Vol 1 23 Sgt. Fury.
  • The letters page also contains a Statement of Ownership, Management, and Circulation.
