Synopsis for "Burning Down the House (Part 1)"

Songbird joins Swordsman in the woods near Thunderbolts Mountain for moral support as he cremates his sister, Andrea, on a funeral pyre. Strucker promises Melissa that once he has fulfilled his Thunderbolts contract, he is going to kill Norman Osborn. He tells Songbird to watch her back, because Osborn is going to start cleaning house.

Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., Osborn is testifying in front of the Senate Oversight Committee on Superhuman Activities. He elects to take a confrontational stance against the committee, blaming their mismanagement for allowing the Skrull invasion to happen and suggesting that the Skrulls may have had human collaborators within the government. He calls for an independent body to investigate the committee, S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., and other agencies, and resigns as director of the Thunderbolts in protest. He then leaves a stunned Senate for his appointment with the President.

Back at Thunderbolts Mountain, Moonstone begins a therapy session with Penance. After trying to provoke Robbie into using his powers, Karla taunts him with a straitjacket and tells him the water he’s been drinking was drugged. As he begins to lose consciousness, Moonstone reveals to Robbie that she is the new leader of the Thunderbolts and tells him he’s going to be moved to a maximum security facility for the rest of his life. After Robbie passes out, Karla finds Mac Gargan and tells him it’s time to take care of Songbird and Radioactive Man as well, much to Venom’s delight.

Chen Lu finds Songbird in her quarters and tells her that he has been called home to China. Melissa walks Chen to the hangar, where Chen confesses his feelings for her. Melissa forcefully tells Chen to get into his helicopter and leave, which he does. A tearful Songbird then tells a hidden figure that Chen is gone, and Bullseye emerges from the shadows. He puts two knives to Songbird’s throat and back and shares his excitement to get his revenge on her for paralyzing him. Melissa desperately tells Bullseye that if she dies, the security tapes of Osborn’s recent rampage as Green Goblin will go public, but Bullseye tells her Osborn has that covered. He then tells Songbird to say two words for him: “kill me”.
