Most people reviewing the files on Dr. Calvin Zabo cut to the chase. Say he "was obsessed with the Robert Louis Stevenson novella, hence he works to unleash his own inner Hyde", blah blah blah. A drastic oversemplification, because no one has an attention span anymore. Really, he was fascinated by this whole place and time. Lots of scientists are, it was a watershed of discovery and invention. What Zabo was finding in his biology research he framed in context of this fiction. Similarly, he was one of these "Ripperologists". More quiet little men like Zabo who feel there's something greater inside them, something unstoppable, waiting to escape. He's living his fantasy.
