Synopsis for "The Way of the Weird"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Doctor Strange (Vol. 4) #1

The story begins with Doctor Stephen Strange inside of a young boy's "soulscape" confronting a tribe Soul-Eaters and demanding they leave. The Soul-Eaters refuse and battle with Strange, eventually releasing their champion upon, which Strange defeats handily. Strange then begins making out with one of the Soul-Eaters who he could tell was attracted to him.

In the reality plane of existence, the parents of the boy whose soul Strange is inside walk into the room and find Strange floating in the air and making kissing sounds. As they are commenting on this, Strange returns to reality and lets them know that their son's soul is free from the the parasites that were residing in it. They exchange conversation and Doctor Strange leaves, wandering through the streets of New York while observing the supernatural happenings he passes by.

As he is walking, Strange finds a Psyche-Leech attached to an old man. Strange finds this odd, and removes the leech from the man before continuing on his way to the Bar With No Doors where he meets with his magician friends Doctor Voodoo, Scarlet Witch, and Shaman. Doctor Strange converses with them about the unusual creatures he had been encountering that day with the Soul-Eaters and the Psyche Leech and asks the magicians if they have noticed anything out of the ordinary. While they are talking, the quartet are interrupted by Monako, the owner of the bar, and an old and famous magician. Monako warns Strange that there is a universal balance that needs to be kept for using magic and asks Strange is he is paying his debts. The two argue and eventually Monako leaves.

Later, in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum, Strange meets a woman named Zelma Stanton standing in front of the door who is debating with herself to knock. Strange, not revealing who he is, discusses with her about the house and the man who owns it. He eventually convinces her to knock and as she does, he welcomes her inside. Strange guides her through the Sanctorum and finally convinces Zelma to take off her hat and show him why she came. Zelma does so to reveal a host of parasitic creatures growing on her head that then leap out and run amok in Strange's house.

Synopsis for "This is Where Things Get Unusual"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Doctor Strange (Vol. 4) #2

Doctor Strange leads Zelma Stanton through his house as they track down the mysterious creatures that erupted from her brain. The duo pass by many weird and mystic objects and the Doctor warns Zelma not to touch anything. Eventually they track the monsters down to the library where they are chewing on books. One of the creatures throws a book at Zelma, which knocks her backwards and transports her to another room of the house.

Now in a hallway, Zelma peeks through an open doorway where she finds zombies that attempt to come and eat her. She barely stops them with the door and heads down the hallway, into the kitchen where she sees some of the creatures breaking into the magician's fridge (which Doctor Strange had warned her earlier never to look into). Zelma sees inside the fridge and is traumatized by what she sees, but just then the Doctor's housekeeper, Wong, appears, and defeats some of the creatures before taking a dish out of the fridge to begin cooking. Wong converses with Zelma a bit and then leads her back to the library where Strange is floating in the air and reading.

Doctor Strange reveals that he has discovered the creatures running amok are Mind Maggots, and that they feed on psychic energy. The Doctor says that they are headed for the cellar in search of food, and deduces that the only way to keep them from reaching it is to have Zelma call the creatures back by shouting all of her darkest secrets. Although initially resistant, Zelma eventually agrees and begins yelling all the secrets about her. This causes the Mind Maggots to rush back to the room, but when they arrive they all infest Doctor Strange instead of Zelma again.

Wong and Zelma look over Doctor Strange as he lies on the floor with demon-like abscesses all over his body. The doctor gets up and assures them that he will be alright, claiming that the parasites now inside of him will die of starvation because his mind is magically protected from being fed upon. Doctor Strange then shows Zelma to the door and as she is leaving asks if she would like to come arrange the books in his library some time. As she is walking away down the street, Zelma agrees and tells him that she will come back on Saturday to do just that.

After Zelma has left, Doctor Strange and Wong confide in each other, commenting that the Doctor hadn't been completely truthful with Zelma by not telling her that the Mind Maggots had never been seen in their dimension before. The Doctor also frets about the fact that some of his magic spells that day had not been working, as if they didn't exist when he tried to cast them.

While the two walk away down a hall of the Sanctum Sanctorum, an ectoplasmic figure of an unidentified Sorcerer Supreme begins to crawl out of one of the doorways, praising his luck at being alive and worrying that he needs to find the Sorcerer Supreme of this dimension. Just then, a group of hands appear behind him and pull the sorcerer back into the doorway, claiming that they need to "burn the magic out of him."

Synopsis for "Eaters of Magic"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Doctor Strange (Vol. 4) #3

Doctor Strange wakes up in his astral form in Central Park, fully nude, with giant magic-eating slugs covering his body. The Doctor tries to run away from them and eventually finds the magical Axe of Angarruumus which he uses to slay the pursuing slugs. As he begins to leave the park, he realizes that all of Manhattan is overrun by the slugs which are eating away all the magic in the area.

Doctor Strange dredges up all of the magic in his body into one form and throws it at the slugs, causing all of them to turn their focus on him and chase him down. He leads all of the slugs to the Sanctum Sanctorum, Doctor Strange's house and the most magical location in all of New York, but finds the magical defenses of his home activated. Strange breaks into his own home through a window in the ceiling and meets his assistant Wong who is defending the interior of the Sanctum from the slugs. Strange reunites his astral form with his body and then proceeds to cast a spell that causes a huge explosion of magic over the entire house, completely bloating all of the slugs and putting them into "food comas".

With all of the slugs pacified, Strange goes to the door in the Sanctum that connects to the realm where the slugs came from, Fandazar Foo. He explains to Wong that Fandazar Foo was a place of gargantuan amounts of magic and that sorcerers would come to the realm to replenish their magic and relax with other magicians. As they approach the door to the realm, Strange suddenly remembers that he had been opening this door earlier that day, and that an explosion had occurred that forced the swarms of slugs out of it and had blasted his own astral form out into Central Park where he had been knocked unconscious.

Doctor Strange opens the door and this time he and Wong step through it looking on in horror at the bleak remains of Fandazar Foo, everything dead and drained of magic. The two spot a tree where a group of dead sorcerer supremes are hung, and Strange decides that they need to find who did this to the magicians before the perpetrator finds them first.

In another location outside of Fandazar Foo, the wreakers of the destruction, the Empirikul shown. Two Eyebots of the Empirikul approach their leader, the Imperator, and alert him that they have just been informed of Doctor Strange's presence at their last site of Inquisition. The Imperator tells them that they will cleanse magic from Doctor Strange's homeworld next, and is then shown cutting into a large white whale.
