Synopsis for "Mekano Lives!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
X-Men #36
Continued from last issue...

Burglars have broken into Professor Xavier's mansion and find that they have gotten more than they bargained for when the Beast jumps them from the shadows easily defeating them. As Hank fights off the intruders, the other X-Men are in the lower levels of the mansion trying to figure out a plan on how to get to Europe and face Factor Three and rescue the Professor. When Hank joins them with the unconscious crooks, they hook them up to Cerebro and have all of their memories of the X-Men being at the mansion erased and send them off to confess their crimes to the police.

With the immediate problem solved, the X-Men have Warren call his parents to try and get them the money they need to fly to Europe, but find that the Worthington's have gone on a Caribbean Cruise. Checking the X-Plane, they find that their primary source of transport doesn't have enough fuel to take them to Europe. Changing to their civilian guises, the X-Men attempt to get the money through a Welfare organization; however this too turns up blank.

With no other choice, the X-Men decide that they should try using their mutant powers to earn them the money they need to plan the trip. Changing into their costumes, Marvel Girl, Cyclops and Angel then approach the foreman of a construction site and give him a demonstration on how their powers can be a benefit to his construction project. However, the foreman is forced to decline their offer when it turns out that they are not unionized and therefore cannot legally work on the site.

Adding insult to injury, when the X-Men change back to their civilian guises they find that the Professor's Royals Royce has been towed, and they haven't enough money to meet up with Hank and Bobby who have been trying to find a source of money in Greenwich Village. Overhearing their plight is student Tom Regal, who goes to college in the area and offers them a lift to the Village. There, Scott, Jean and Warren find that Iceman and Beast are entertaining people with their powers hoping to collect donations afterward. Departing from Tom, the X-Men cannot help but note that Tom has spent their encounter bemoaning being underprivileged in spite of the fact that he is wearing brand new clothing and driving a brand new vehicle.

Beast and Iceman's show is interrupted when Tom appears moments later, in a high tech exo-suit. Calling himself Mekano, he tells all gathered that he intends to demolish the New Memorial Library and implicates Beast and Iceman by telling all gathered that they are working with him. While Bobby is apprehended by the police (and having expended too much energy to free himself from the handcuffs), Beast attempts to attack Mekano straight on and is easily knocked out with a single blow.

Mekano arrives at the library and begins trashing the place when Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Angel arrive on the scene to try and stop him. When the police try to arrest them as well, Marvel Girl easily subdues them with her telekinetic powers, leaving Cyclops and Angel to deal with Mekano. Mekano easily overpowers the X-Men and continues his rampage. However, when the X-Men prove to be persistent adversaries, he attempts to flee by jumping from one rooftop to another. However, the novice villain underestimates his jump, and just barely manages to grab the ledge of the building. However, his weight of the armor causes the ledge to break off. Before he can fall to his death, Mekano is saved by Jean's telekinetic powers.

Upon planting his feet on the ground, Mekano is approached not only by the police and the X-Men, but also his father Andrew Regal, who reveals Mekano to be his son. When wondering why his son would go on such a rampage, Tom explains that his father’s philanthropy work had left him neglected and he was sick of being known as the son of a known philanthropist. Andrew Regal realizes the errors in raising his son, and agrees to pay for all the damage done by his son and return the stolen exo-suit. Satisfied by this response, the police allow Tom to be released into his father’s custody.

In thanks, Mr. Regal offers the X-Men an award for their help in stopping his son's rampage. The X-Men decline, however accept a loan of the $1,500.00 they need to fly to Europe. With their money in hand, the X-Men take a flight to Europe in their civilian guises unaware that the commander of Factor Three has been watching their every step.

Tales of Suspense #84

It is done! They did not suspect that I was adapting their powers as they stood before me! Using the photographic ability built into my eyes, I have made a permanent record of what I must do! My plan is now complete...and ready for execution! With the other Avengers gone, Captain America is now as good as slain!

Super-Adaptoid

Continuing from last issue, Captain America had defeated the Adaptoid and has just briefed the other Avengers who have just returned from a mission. Goliath tells Cap that he'll examine the Adaptoid after he comes back later in the day, and the other Avengers all leave Cap in charge to watch the Adaptoid, little knowing that the whole time they were in its presence it was adapting all their forms.

Adopting a form that is an amalgamation of all the Avengers forms, the Adaptoid frees itself and resumes its mission to destroy Captain America. It's attack on the Captain soon overwhelms the star spangled hero, and the Super-Adaptoid then carries Captain America into the air in order to drop him to his death. After some resistance, Cap is unable to stop the android who drops him from a dangerous height into New York Harbor.

Thinking Captain America is dead, the Super-Adaptoid returns to its masters, however Cap has just barely survived his encounter thanks to the fact that he controlled his fall into the water.

Synopsis for "When the Unliving Strike!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Strange Tales #146
Using a huge "swamp buggy", Fury and his men have tracked the "THEM" vehicle to a "murky, insect-infested swamp". They ward off an attack by a squad of amphibian androids. Meanwhile, aboard the Heli-carrier, Count Bornag Royale, the "top representative" of A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics), a "society of the greatest intellects on Earth", is offended by the heavy-handed security treatment he's given by Fury's men. In the underwater lab, the hooded scientists speak of being "geniuses", and being worthy of "THEM". Fury uses a "sonic vibrator" to blast into the base, but is trapped between 2 walls of "electric energy waves". He tells the baddies he's set "pint-sized fission bombs" to blow up the base, causing a stalemate, as the hooded types feel they are "too valuable" to "THEM" to sacrifice themselves. But a group of "hammer-hand androids" have gotten loose because of the vibrations, and stampede the evil scientists to death, smashing the electric barrier in the process. Royale tells the S.H.I.E.L.D. board of directors he's come to offer them their services and technology, but feels he cannot do so while being answerable to men with such a "lack of intelligence" and "over-inflated ego" as Nick Fury. Fury & his men polish off the androids. Surveying the lab, Fury realizes they're "no penny-ante outfit", and compares them to the Nazis, as well as HYDRA. He also realizes, because of the "geniuses", that he's heard of another group of scientists who create and sell ideas-- Advanced Idea Mechanics!

Synopsis for "Helpless, at the Hands of Dragorr!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Tales to Astonish #94
Following his battle with It, and believing that the creature was a robot created by the surface dwellers, Namor has called upon a council of war in order to prepare to do battle with the surface world. The gathered council of war agree unanimously that aggressive action must be taken against the surface world due to this perceived transgression against Atlantis. Although Dorma protests this idea, Namor is unwavering and dismisses her until she can have more faith in his command. With everything prepared, Namor decides to go out to sea and think of the best way to humble the surface dwellers.

While Namor is occupied, a message-carrying missile arrives in the council chamber and is recovered by Dorma. Although she doesn't like what the message is asking she turns it over to her ruler anyway. It's an invitation from a dictator of a small island nation named Dragorr, asking for an alliance between the two nations. Furious at such a suggestion and believing that it is a surface trap, the Sub-Mariner decides to go to Dragorr's island nation to teach him a lesson, playing into Dragorr's hands. Dragorr's supposed minion, the Gnome detects Namor's approach and initiates weapons to attack him, easily incapacitating the Sub-Mariner, allowing Dragorr's minions to capture him and take him before Dragorr himself.

Trapped in an energy field that renders him immobilized, Namor is brought before Dragorr who explains he lured the Sub-Mariner to his island so that he might exploit Namor's superior strength to dispose of an army of rebels that seek to overthrow his rule. Much to Namor's surprise, the energy field also allows Dragorr to control his actions and sends him out to attack, and the Sub-Mariner crushes the rebellion with relative ease. Namor is then ordered to return to Dragorr who then decides to keep him a prisoner.

Monitoring the situation on the surface, Dorma goes to her lord's rescue, taking a potion that allows her to briefly breathe on the surface. She learns the location of Dragorr's castle from the rebels. Breaking in, she uses a hydro-rifle to free the Sub-Mariner from Dragorr's control. They are then confronted by Dragorr who challenges Namor to a one-on-one battle. During the fight, Namor is surprised by Dragorr's superior strength, but soon realizes the truth of Dragorr's nature. Ordering Dorma to shoot Dragorr with the hydro rifle, Namor reveals that Dragorr is in reality a robot controlled by the Gnome as he smashes the device to bits.

Attempting to avoid capture, the Gnome attempts to jump out of a window but ends up landing in a net put out by the rebels. With the Gnome captured, the rebellion easily dismantles their leadership. In thanking Namor, the rebel leader informs the prince of the deep that they intend on installing a free election system on the island and pledges to never have their nation interfere with the interests of Atlantis. With the threat of Dragorr disposed of, Namor and Dorma return to the deeps and head back to Atlantis.
