History
According to Atlantean legend, Tolan was the overlord of Atlantis prior to the Great Cataclysm, at a time where land covered the Earth and no large bodies of water existed. Tolan was allegedly an ancestor of the Atlantean Royal Family.
Tolan was a wise and beloved ruler. In his old age felt a bad omen for his people. This omen came true when Nagorbu developed a magnet that could repel human flesh in an effort to solidify the military might of Atlantis and allow them to attract and conquer planets, with the ultimate goal of ruling the universe. Tolan refused to use the weapon and ordered it to be dumped into the ocean, refusing to have Atlantis become a warmongering nation. A combination of the magnet and Nagorbu's war-hungry followers attempts to recover it caused a massive flood over the centuries, well after Tolan and Nagorbu died. A tidal wave caused by the digging and atomic disruption of the land (due to some of the means used by Nagorbu and his followers) which ultimately sank Atlantis.
Tolan's legend was passed down by the Atlanteans,[1] who sometimes invoked his name.[2]Notes
- The only recorded tale of Tolan was told in Sub-Mariner Comics #31 (January, 1949) by the Sub-Mariner to Betty Dean. Namor presented it as a legend passed down, and admitted that he was unsure of how much truth there is to the story. While the story contradicts the known facts surrounding Atlantis during the Pre-Cataclysmic Age, and the Great Cataclysm, it does not discount that Tolan ever existed.
- Atlantis' profile in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #1 (March, 2008) mentions the story but point out it contradicts with historical evidence, while the Great Cataclysm's profile in Blockbusters of the Marvel Universe #1 (March, 2011) states that those events, along a series of other causes to the Great Cataclysm, was unrevealed to have actually had any influence on the event, locally or globally.
- It remains unrevealed whether there is any truth to the relation between Namor and Tolan.
- Tolan isn't mentioned as relative in the profiles of Atlantean royalty in handbooks, including Namor's, Namora's and Namorita's profiles in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #8 (June, 2009), nor in Thakorr's profiles in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #12 (January, 2010) and Vampires: The Marvel Undead #1 (December, 2011).
