History

The Tree of Shadows was planted by the Gardener eons ago and grew in the sorcery of the Darkforce Dimension. The surrounding area became known as Null Space and was conquered by the Shi'ar Empire during a war with the Skrull Empire.[1]

The Tree was the repository for all of the Raptor Amulets used to empower the Fraternity of Raptors and there were thousands of amulets hanging from the tree. When a Raptor switched places with a host, the host was trapped within a crystal connected to the tree while the ancient spirit of the Raptor inhabited a cybernetic body. Many of the deactivated crystals contain the rotting corpses of previous Raptor hosts and the tree was protected by demonic creatures.[citation needed]

The Raptor known as Gyre implied that the Fraternity of Raptors had masters. Talon told Vulcan that several Shi'ar Lords were loyal to the Fraternity of Raptors even though the order had been defunct for sixty centuries. The demonic creatures guarding the tree were said to be loyal to the source. The amulet that transformed the Skrull commander, H'jke Jeeku, into Talon re-entered normal space after a weapon the Inhumans used on a fleet of Skrulls dislodged it from a pocket of dark matter.[citation needed]

Notes

There would appear to be some connection between the Lifestone Tree and the Tree of Shadows. The Sphinx, who is empowered by a fragment of the Lifestone Tree, summoned other similarly empowered beings to fight his future self and Gyre, a member of the Fraternity of Raptors.[citation needed]

Darkhawk's armor responded to the hieroglyphics in the Sphinx's pyramid,[2] further hinting at a connection between the Raptors and the Lifestone Tree. The Sphinx was also able to control Darkhawk due to his amulet.[citation needed]
