The Tuurngait are powerful spirits invoked by Inuit shaman for help and guidance.[1] They inhabit the caves beneath Mount Thor on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada, where they entice unwitting travelers into their domain.[1]
When her hamlet of Pangnirtung on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada, was attacked by Qalupalik, Snowguard trekked to Mount Thor to seek the aid of the Tuurngait. Although the Tuurngait were initially hostile toward her, Snowguard (as a descendent of Inuit angakkuq (shaman) who was connected to the power of Sila) performed an Inuit drum dance which persuaded the Tuurngait to ally with her. Returning to Pangnirtung, Snowguard and the Tuurngait apprehended one of the Qalupalik, which prompted the others to retreat. The Tuurngait then pledged to assist Snowguard whenever they were needed.[1]
