Director Tyler Hayward[src]

History

Tyler Hayward is the former Acting Director of S.W.O.R.D., succeeding the founder of the organization, Maria Rambeau, who passed away from cancer during the years of the Blip.[1]

Hayward first encountered Wanda Maximoff when she confronted him in his office at S.W.O.R.D. headquarters, seeking to retrieve the Vision's body after his death at the hands of Thanos. Hayward avoided giving her the body because he believed she would try to bring him back to life, and if not that, then that she would bury $3 million worth of Vibranium in the ground, which he wouldn't allow. He permitted Wanda to see Vision's disassembled corpse after she shattered the glass of the operating floor, but she soon left after realizing she couldn't feel his life force anymore.[2].

Hayward later greeted a returning Captain Monica Rambeau, the daughter of the founder of S.W.O.R.D., who had been snapped away by Thanos five years prior and brought back by the actions of the Avengers. He assigned her to a missing persons case brought to his attention by the FBI, but he was soon called out to oversee this mission himself when Rambeau disappeared into what would become known as the Westview Anomaly.[1].

Hayward managed to lock onto and track the signal of what appeared to be the Vision inside, but was later determined to be a construct of the synthezoid created by Wanda Maximoff, who had also created the hex.[2] Hayward proceeded to frame Wanda for the willing and premeditated kidnapping of an entire town, devoting countless resources to breaching the anomaly and killing her. This finally caught her attention when Hayward almost killed her and her twin sons, Billy and Tommy, and she angrily confronted him outside the anomaly, warning him to back off or face the consequences, before threatening to kill him by effortlessly mind-controlling his military force to aim their rifles at him.[1]

Hayward did not back down, however, and removed Rambeau and her compatriots, FBI agent Jimmy Woo and scientist Darcy Lewis, from the team monitoring the Hex, as it came to be known, when they expressed anger and distrust toward his management of the situation.[3] Hayward later activated Project Cataract, a top secret project to bring Vision back online as a sentient weapon who would do the bidding of S.W.O.R.D., and sent him after Wanda and her family within the Hex. Wanda's construct of Vision managed to repel Hayward's Vision, returning him his memories from his original life and causing him to go rogue, flying away. Hayward sent in several troops to try and apprehend Wanda, but these soldiers were dispatched by her sons, who had developed powers of their own. Finally, in a fit of rage, Hayward entered the decaying Hex himself and attempted to shoot Wanda's children, though Rambeau, who had developed energy-related powers, absorbed the bullets' energy and rendered them inert. Darcy then rammed Hayward's car when he prepared to run the children over, trapping him and leaving him to be arrested later by the FBI.[4]
