Synopsis for "Chapter One: Good Artists Copy"

Two months ago...

A team of four mercenaries equipped with highly advanced equipment and weapons assaults the Blaakguard Building. After eliminating the guards and security, they make their way to Damage Control Remote Prison 42 to free its prisoner: Reed Richards of Earth-1610, also known as the Maker. Richards had carefully planned out his escape in which he corrupted a team of prison therapists and sent them out to the world and in turn recruited the mercenaries. After the mercenaries gave Richards his suit and equipment, Richards, rather than paying his hired rescuers, used a device to reshape and fuse the mercenaries into an indistinguishable copy of himself and leaving it in his former cell to fool his captors before he makes his escape.

Six weeks ago...

Mister Fantastic and Black Panther investigate the ruined site of the Blaakguard Building. They enter the Damage Control node and confront the Maker's facsimile, which then collapses into gore - due to a margin of error as one of the mercenaries was not the person the Maker was expecting. Richards and T'Challa are now aware that the Maker had escaped.

One week later...

The Maker infiltrates the Baxter Building and finds what he is looking for.

The next day, the Illuminati have gathered to learn on the Maker's whereabouts. So far, the Maker had stolen a large amounts of Vibranium from Wakanda, four Terrigen Spheres from New Arctilan, a Bridge from a secret Stark warehouse, a Krakoan Gateway (which is supposedly to be impossible for any non-Mutant to use), an Immunity Lance from the Sanctum Sanctorum, and a few Dilution Shields from Atlantis. The Maker is building something from these stolen objects and he is also deliberately letting the Illuminati to investigate his activities. The Illuminati do have the means in tracking down the Maker by sensing the unique energy signatures from the stolen components once he activates them.

Meanwhile, the Maker makes an abrupt visit to Miles Morales's bedroom in the middle of the night. He recognizes Miles as another native from Earth-1610 (referring him as his "brother") and he wants to offer him a chance to return to their home universe, stating that it felt wrong not to ask Miles. But Miles turns down his offer in which the Maker gives him a blank calling card if he changes his mind. The Maker then teleports away.

The Maker activates a portal powered by the other stolen components, and prompting the Illuminati to locate him. The Maker reveals his plans to the Illuminati that he is going "someplace [he] can call [his] own". Reed realizes what his alternate counterpart is doing and urges his comrades to destroy the portal. But the Maker's force-field blocks their attacks. Before the Maker enters the portal, he asks Reed if, given he could "truly change things", he would erase him from existence. Reed momentarily pauses before he answers that he would. The Maker replies that he will "keep that in mind."

Notes

  • Writer Donny Cates was originally going to launch the new Ultimate imprint that this miniseries kicks off. He had to drop out after being involved in a car accident which resulted in a severe period of rehabilitation and a months-long memory loss, so Jonathan Hickman was given the reins of the project.[1] Donny Cates is still credited as a co-writer of this issue in Marvel.com, and in the credits within the issue itself, it says "Special thanks to Donny Cates." Cates' original version likely would have involved Earth-1610, given that he had the Maker travel there in Venom (Vol. 4) #26.
