Sorry to bother you Jamie, I currently created the article Flying Dutchman's Ghost, and have found a relevant picture, but do not know where to upload the image.. i have tryed uploading it on WikiMedia, but this did not work, please can you reply by posting on my User disscussion page Cheers Kiptrev 13:41, 11 July 2006 (Eastern Daylight Time)

Sorry folks! I must have broken the upload feature. I should have it fixed by 21:00 EDT.

Hey Jamie, thanks for fixing the upload picture feature, i was just wondering about the Amazing Spider-Man Cover Art Gallery, is it too big to load, as all i get is a blank page and i also checked out Marvel Wikia, they don't have nearly as many articles so it will be very good to link with that one. --(Maxdillon 16:39, 7 November 2006 (Eastern Standard Time))

Thank you for reminding me about the Amazing Spider-Man Cover Art Gallery. I will take a look at it this weekend I hope. I don't think it is the size that is breaking it, but I could wrong.
The Wikia Marvel Wiki is very young only a few months old. Adding their community to ours will give us a big boost!

Character Template

Hi Jamie! I have a suggestion for the Character Template. Could you also add a link to the character's quotes page like this:

Interest in a new Wiki?

Hye! I was wondering if you would be interested in a wiki I requested called Alternate Marvel, it is a Fanon wiki. You can create articles about made up superheroes or other characters that live in the Mavel Universe. You can also take already existing characters and give them new stories. Please tell me what you think of this idea and if you'll be interested in joining so it can be created. Darth JCS

Cool - looking forward to hearing your accumulated wisdom. You've actually done it, I came in after the magic started to help it grow :-)

Gil (talk) 03:53, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

I just used eBay to buy Xmen 129 Is there a template you have for individual comics? It would be cool if the template included a link at the bottom in external links to the search result on eBay for that comic

Gil (talk) 04:59, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

We are JUST about to implement to template for individual comics... Check back in a few days and we will have an automated way to add the comic.
As for links to eBay results... that is a great idea and something I will look into right away!

Hello Jamie

I'm really sorry about what I've done. But, we absolutely know about it. Jean Grey is Phoenix, like she said in Phoenix Endsong # 5, when she resurrected herself and separated the Phoenix Force with Emma Frost. If you don't believe me, look at In that site, enter the Women article. I'm sure you will not find article named: Grey,Jean or Jean Grey.Article about Jean, written: PHOENIX (JEAN GREY).Thank you for your attention. Phoenix wings will touch your heart with flames...- The preceding unsigned comment was added by Forest777 (talk • contribs).

I appreciate you writing to me. Even thought the Marvel website says x, we don't necessarily have to follow their lead exactly. Please wait for a consensus to be reached by our community before making these changes.
Further, We do not use all capitals in our naming convention, this I assure you needs no discussion.
--Jamie 17:57, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Hey Jamie, Forest seems adverse to actually discussing changes that are bound to prove controversial. Would you lock the Jean Grey page? I'm getting tired of fixing things. --Squirrelloid 04:12, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I know... ME!?!? Not on the Database for a few days? Crazy!
To be honest, the server that hosts the forums and the news site blew ANOTHER board in the middle of last week and I have just been too busy in the last few days to repair it.
I will tell you all, later, why I have been too busy... Trust me, it was unavoidable. Anywho, I am back now and should be around for the next few days.
I may end up disappearing for a few days AGAIN in the first week of February. Wikia conference in California. ;)

Jamie, just wondering how the Wikia conference went...any news? --M1shawhan 02:03, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Not just yet, the conference is this coming Monday, actually. My speech is at 1pm, I will try to tape it for all to see. NO PROMISES THOUGH! ;)
Once I am back home, Wednesday will probably be spent catching up with all I have missed over the last 2 weeks. You guys NEVER slow down, do you? The harder you work, the more I have to read over that day! (Don't slow down on a count of me! ;)
Hopefully, I will implement all the things I have been promising for 2 months now...
Hold down the fort until then folks!

Comic Template

As long as you're tinkering, I'd like to request you retain the ability to specify at least one credit name. So, for instance, we can credit Virginia Romita here (traffic manager) and Irving Forbush wherever he should occur (Cake Decorator, Mayan Headdress, etc...). (also, I happen to like the layout we are currently using for Issue Title position and comic title, vol., issue, month, and year.) --Squirrelloid 05:58, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I promise there will be a 'custom' field you can use for 'traffic manager' or 'cake decorator'. In fact, it shouldn't be hard to allow for 3 or 4 custom fields, which are invisible if not in use. :)
As for the layout... the cool part is I make make a horrible disaster of the layout and we can fix it any time, across the whole website with a single click. I will keep plugging away at the actual functionality and features. Once they are complete, we can vote on the best layout afterward. (I do like your layout, too.)
--Jamie 14:48, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I have to strongly urge you to reconsider putting characters appearing as part of the template. You do realize that many team books will quickly exhaust any finite number of characters you plan for in some storyline - a book like XMen 30 (Scott and Jean's wedding) probably has 50 some identifiable characters in it, and cross-overs can easily have 20-30 heroes! (And lets not talk about things like Infinity Gauntlet or Secret Wars!) Furthermore, there's really no good reason to have character appearances be part of the template, because the Appearance pages need to be chronological in Marvel Time, not by publication date, so there is *no* way to automate it. --Squirrelloid 07:57, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

While I agree there is no way to automate 'chronological sequencing', I think it would be extremely handy to have the summary list of appearances automatically appear, be categorized and be counted for us. Even if we only use this feature to get an exact count of how many appearances we know about... and to use as a reference when 'manually' building our chronological listing.
The feature will stay, I see value for it. If it comes down to it, I have found a much easier way to include more characters. I could certainly lift the 'Max' to 50 characters if you think that is reasonable.
Do you not see value in this at all?, our newest 'competition', has a similar feature.
--Jamie 13:22, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
I understand why you want that feature, but in addition to technical reasons (for any fixed number there will be some comic that exceeds it), there are also aesthetic reasons to keep characters appearing out of the infobox. Effectively, it looks awful if the synopsis goes from half-page to full page at some point. This is why m1shawhan moved the characters appearing above the synopsis when he redid the template before.
Further, it destroys the value of the infobox as a *quick* summary of information. Putting characters appearing in the infobox will make it longer than the remainder of the page in a lot of cases, which is also aesthetically displeasing, and not really what infoboxes were intended for (imho).
I know in some older versions of wikiweb you could click on a page title and it would search for all occurrences of that page title. That would provide the same functionality as auto-linking this way would. Alternately, if we could arrange to have particular categories specified as the domain of a search... (E.g., searching category:comic for Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) would allow you to generate the same information.)
Yes, I know I'm putting Aesthetics above possible functionality. But if it looks nice people will be more inclined to use it.
Having taken a look at comicvine, I really don't like how they've done a lot of things, and the only marginally interesting part is the superhero vs superhero battles (and they're even scoring it wrong).
--Squirrelloid 07:31, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
I apologize for maybe mis-stating my intentions. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do previously, but I think I have worked it out in my mind now. What do you think of this:
* is an alphabetically sorted (and counted) listing of all known appearances. (This is generated by info placed in the comic templates)
* Jubilee/Appearances is a chronologically sorted, uncounted listing of all known appearances. (This is manually genereated by data, possibly in part from .)
By allowing for both options, you don't limit functionality and one list can actually help build the other. Furthermore, the end user has a choice of how they want to view the data. This data will not appear directly on the character's article ( Jubilee ), rather just links to the other pages mentioned above.
As for the comic template, I am not 100% sure, but I think I can lift the number of heroes/villains/supporting characters to 100 or more if the necessity arises. Really, I don't see why we can't workaround any potential one-off that we encounter. Currently, I have the 'appearances' sections below each 'synopsis', but if we are all agreed, I can move that above, no problemo.
What say you, kind sir? Any other thoughts on the templates? (Keep in mind the character template is only 80% complete as of the time of this writing... I have to go back to it tonight)
--Jamie 15:07, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, it may very much be the case that I'm confused about some things. (1) Where are the character appearances going? Are they not in the infobox? (2) Is Excalibur 86 a fair preview of what has been accomplished with the template thus far?
If Excalibur 86 is, I have a few problems with it. (1) I much prefer m1shawhan and my arrangement where the story title went above the cover image and the comic title went with the volume and issue number. This is a more sensible arrangement because the comic name is redundant information (its on the cover after all), and thus only necessary for context with volume and issue number (and to provide a link to the comic listings - it should be hyperlinked). Additionally, the font size of the vol, issue number, month, and year looks far too large. (2) You removed all the nested heirarchy from the characters appearing list. Being able to nest groups under the group name is fairly important, as is being able to nest locations. (In this particular instance, listing Genosha and Hammer Bay on separate lines is a misrepresentation. They're only in Hammer Bay, and we should point out that's in Genosha, but they are not otherwise in Genosha.) When there's only a single location for an area, listing them as Hammer Bay, Genosha (one line) makes sense. But a lot of comics have multiple locations in the same area. (New York City, for instance - see Uncanny X-Men 177). Thus being able to nest lists with the bulleted list feature is useful for classifying groups of locations as well as heroes or villains. It makes the characters appearing and related information easier to read. (3) Appearances should go above the synopsis. (4) Finally, character names (et al.) should be manually hyperlinked so the capability exists to have non-hyperlinked names. For instance, soldiers often appear in comics, and we want to list them en-masse under other characters and not have them hyperlinked.
--Squirrelloid 16:52, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Here's a thought, as long as we're trying to automate a bunch of stuff, is the server capable of parsing a string of characters? Ie, we hand it something that looks like:

| heroes = {X-Men{Storm,Wolverine,Sprite,Nightcrawler}}

And it parses it to:
Basically, what I did is used "{ }" to mean the enclosed should be nested one step (and associated with the item immediately before { }), and "," to separate out separate entries. (comma-delineated list). Now, i know if i hand excel a text file with a,b,c,d,e,f,g;a2,b2,c2,... i can tell it to use , to separate columns and ; as a line ender to start a new row, and it will do it just fine (in fact, you can specify totally arbitrary characters if you like). So this would prevent us from having to specify how many heroes and would automagically format it for us, and it seems perfectly plausible given other software I have used. What do you think - is this worth looking into?
(Presumably, we have it create individual categories for each of the heroes too - since it can parse each character as a separate entry, that shouldn't be too hard)
--Squirrelloid 17:06, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
1) I can certainly move the story name above the image, but what if there is more than one story in the comic? How should we handle that case?
2) I should be able to build in nesting capabilities. It seems like a great feature. :) Would you need nesting for heroes/villains/supporting/locations and what else?
3) I can do that. Is everyone in agreement on that?
4) Would it be sufficient to not hyper-linking 'supporting' characters? I assume heroes and villains should be always linked, as you would never put 'soldier #4' in the 'heroes' section...
"5)" Regarding your parsing idea, the software cannot currently handle parsing strings automagically. I might be able to do something myself, but it might take a lot of work. I will look into it. :)
--Jamie 02:18, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Updates: I have added the title to go with volume/issue info. (#1). Although I still didn't know what to do at the top, so I left it. It is redundant, but not all that offensive. We can worry about it later.
I have re-ordered the template as per #3. Instead of synopsis / contributors / appearances... now it goes appearances / contributors / synopsis. Sound good?
I would still like comments on #2 & #4 and I will continue to think about how we could do #5.
--Jamie 02:54, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
(1) Story name above comic image immediately lets you know the contents (and we can change the synopsis title to just "Synopsis"). If there are multiple stories, can we have the Story titles on sequential lines above the image? If you want an example I can make a quick mock-up off my page - let me know.
(2) Heroes, villains, supporting, and locations are everything we should need nesting for.
(3) Wait, contributors? Can't we just put those in the infobox as in Uncanny X-Men 150? I assume you mean editor, writer, et al. M1shawhan and I were trying to get those off the main page. I very much approve of Appearances and then Synopsis. (Really, I like the look of the template M1shawhan, myself, and others hashed out as it appears on Uncanny X-Men 150, so i'd prefer if you model the appearance of what you do on that one).
(4) If it auto-hyperlinks, how do you handle things like Norman Osborn if you don't want to reveal that Norman is the Green Goblin? Or Living Pharoah for UXM 54? (Where he isn't the living monolith yet). Or any other case where you want a name different than their page name to show up, or a villain whose true identity you're trying to keep (somewhat) secret? Not auto-hyperlinking ultimately gives the editor more control over things like this - and people are going to have to learn how to create hyperlinks to edit pages anyway, so its not like we should try to hide this from people. (So I think it would be better to get rid of auto-hyperlinking altogether). Also note that if we do manage to implement 5 you'll need the hyperlinks anyway so it knows when any given entry is done (ie, everything within is one person/thing/place).
(5) Parsing strings with set 'punctuation' should be fairly easy to program. Of course, I say this with little to no familiarity with whatever code the wiki uses, so take that with a grain of salt. But I could probably figure out how to do it in Java (at least, I used to know Java), and could probably even get Matlab to do it (although that would be harder, because Matlab prefers numerical entries for variables - whereas more generalized programming languages treat them all the same - but Matlab is what I'm most familiar with at this point).
--Squirrelloid 03:45, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
(1a) I like the idea of having the stories from within a multi-story comic divided, which leads into (3). For instance, what if the writer of story #1 isn't the same as the writer of story #2? (As is often the case) If we cram all the contributors together in the infobox, how are we to know which is for which? (Now that I write this, I just thought of a way, albeit extremely complex) Still, the way I have it now seems to flow somewhat logically: If only one story, stick contributors in the infobox; If two or more stories, break them out and include them in the individual story sections.
(1b) After looking at UXMen 150 again, I actually like the 'story name' above the image, too. I don't want to put multiple lines up there though, I think it would push the image down too far. What do you think? Would just listing the first story title up there be inoffensive? (The others would appear elsewhere on the page. Location TBD.
(2) Okay, I have been able to figure out how to give the ability to do 'nesting'. I will have to kill auto-linking to do it, but as you say, that is not a problem anyway.
Edit: I take it back, I CAN'T do nesting. If I pass a * or a ** as a parameter to tell the template which level of nesting... We lose the ability to have the template categorize the appearance of the character in that comic. Functionality I feel is far greater than the need to 'nest'. So, to recap, In order to nest, you lose auto-link and auto-categorize. (ie. One step forward, two steps back.) Nesting would have been cool, I won't give up. There may be another way... I just can't think of one presently. (Without undue complication)
(3) As (1) above... I don't disagree that it isn't perfect to have contributors info in the main text of the article, but how do you propose we handle multi-story contributors?
(4) Auto-linking had nothing to do with piping, in this case. We cannot currently pipe (ie. Norman Osborn) regardless of whether it was auto-linked or not. I am working on how we can pipe, as I too believe it is a very important feature.
(5) I know you have no way of knowing this, but the page rendering engine in our database is PHP and we would be pretty much stuck with recoding in PHP. What you are talking about is 'delimited parsing' where the , or the [ is the delimiter. It is possible, but I would rather use the power we have now without digging into code. I am sure the possibility is out there...
Here we go again:
(1a) Can we put breaks in the infobox and have each stories writers/etc... in their own 'sub-box' that only appears if there are multiple stories? Ie, put a line between the credits for each story (Sort of like the line between the image/issue information and the credits right now) - we could put the titles of subsequent stories at the top of their "boxes" if we did this.
(1b) Hmmm... I'd have to see an example I guess. Maybe make subsequent titles smaller? Alternately, see above for another place to put them.
(2) Graaah. Nesting is important for information processing, otherwise we just get a wall of text.
(2b) On a related note, having just looked at Excalibur 86 - can we get some blank lines between sections in the Appearances area? Also, the subsections other than the first all need their titles left-justified.
(3) See 1.
(4) Huh? Why is there a difference between template and non-template in ability to pipe? Also, see Template:Shadowcat where I piped Shadowcat. I guess I don't understand where the problem is (or at what level the problem is). Piping is fairly essential for characters appearing.
(5) Don't know anything about PHP, can't help you - do we have any code wizards we could hit up to work on it? Because it would be awesome. They may be able to solve some of these other programming problems too... like nesting.
--Squirrelloid 05:34, 2 March 2007 (UTC) (someone else should comment, really)
(1) Yes, I suppose I could do that instead. Sounds logical and I think I could make it aesthetically acceptable. I will try it out and send you a link to peek at when it is ready.
(2) I know... You know I am not against nesting, right? In this case, you can't have your cake and eat it, too. I will work on it.
(3) --
(4) I also know piping is essential, but it just one of those things. To be honest, I don't see a big deal here. A really easy workaround is to create a redirect at the 'Norman Osborn' page which goes to 'Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)'. This trick won't work for your 'Shadowcat' example because you would end up at a disambig page, but there is no reason why you can't include the full page name. In the main article text, where it is essential to not have to type out the whole page name, we haven't lost the piping ability. I can't think of any examples where piping couldn't be worked around by redirects or just using the full page name. For categorization purposes, we are going to want to use the full, proper name anyway.
(5) I am fully proficient in PHP. Further, I know scads of people that know PHP better than myself. The issue, however, is that we no longer host our own database and have free reign to play with the code. All sites in the Wikia family share the same code. If I am monkeying around, I am affecting the other 2,000 websites as well. The nesting issue isn't exactly a 'programming problem' as much as the fact that we are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. We are passing the full character's name as a parameter which the template auto-links and categorizes. If we pass an asterisk as a part of that parameter, it will include the asterisk as a part of the characters name, effectively categorizing him/her as . I can EASILY fix this, BUT not without additional work for the page creators. We could simply have TWO parameters. One which 'looks pretty' (ie. nesting) and one which 'does something' (ie. categorization). This would require users to have the following for each character in the comic:
| Hero1Link = * Jubilee
| Hero1Cat = Jubilee
In the top parameter, simply use * or ** or *** to nest the links. The second parameter would only accept the exact page name for the character, but it would do all the categorization work.
See what I mean? Definitely doable, just not much less work than we do today. Might as well type out manually at the bottom of the page.
Boy oh boy... So many things to consider. :)
--Jamie 05:57, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
(2, 4, and 5, whee) So, I also just independently reached the conclusion that doing it as two separate things is the way to go, because I think appearance is as important as content (easy to read pages put us just as far ahead of the competition as increased functionality). Then it becomes a question of how to do the non-category way. Effectively, if we want to maintain our ability to pipe, then we should set up the Appearances section like the Synopsis section (and it wouldn't be any different than what people are currently doing), but do the categorizing like you've got set up now. This way we get piping, nesting, the whole kit-and-caboodle. (Won't swear I spelled caboodle right). The other plus is that if you keep appearances much like it currently is done (eg, Uncanny X-Men 150), translating old pages won't be any more work than your current scheme because we can copy and paste in the old Appearances section. And with the current schema we'd have to retype it all anyway, so the fact that we have to retype everything for the categorization part isn't that bad. Yes, new pages would have to do double duty, but since the longest part of doing a well-written page is the synopsis anyway, I think that's an acceptable consequence. That's my vote at least - 2 separate sections, one with independently parametrized names for categories, one block text form for appearances so the editor can have control over page appearance.
Mostly curiosity - but do we know why piping fails?
--Squirrelloid 06:11, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I bothered to copy your template, figure out what the heck was going on, what the formatting was, and I present for your review my "new and improved" (possibly) version of the template: User:Squirrelloid/Comic Template with example page User:M1shawhan/TestingArea. The work is mostly my own, with input from M1shawhan.
In addition to the changes in functionality I introduced, I added comments to the code to put names to various chunks of code so it could be quickly identified. I also added documentation for the format for the Appearing variable (since this is now a text block like the Synopsis is). Much of the changes also resulted in a cleaner look to the code (except for the infoblock code, which is just doomed to looking like a disaster).
Functionality Changelog
    • All credits moved into the infobox.
    • Appearing now separate from category:character/appearing variables.
    • Story Titles for stories beyond the first moved into the infobox.
    • Font size of issue information (volume, issue#, date) reduced.
    • All person categories have a 20 capacity per story, all location, item, and vehicle variables have a 10 capacity per story.
To Do
    • Update To Do list
    • #vardefine? Remove or otherwise make it invisible
    • Link to comic listing for Title? (alternately, rely on editors to do it for each page).
    • Clean up infobox code so someone else might have a prayer of interpreting it... yeah right.

Hey Jamie, I think you're spending far too much time on that Hottest Girls page - Isn't Halley getting jealous yet? ;)
---Squirrelloid 04:44, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
I hope not! She has seen the page and she is still hotter than the whole bunch of them. ;)
Soon I plan to do an article on the 'hottest comic fans'. She, copycat, & beany ought to draw a few diggs for that article!
I am going to review your template next, I swear!
--Jamie 04:49, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Jaaaamieee! I'm dangling here in anticipation. (And I want to convert over to the template before I do any more comic pages!) --Squirrelloid 05:21, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
To be honest, I am probably going to go with your revised template, BUT I need to speak with you about some additional changes I am hoping to add in. It is impossibly hard to do on talk pages, so I was hoping to speak with you either on the phone, or via MSN messenger. Could you email me at jamie at marveldatabase period com? (you know what I mean, just avoiding spammers) When you email me, we can hopefully set up a time tonight to get this finalized and in use! :)
Trust me, I hate the fact I haven't been able to get this done either. Personal life has been really busy lately.
--Jamie 16:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Based on his history of vandalism, i blocked him for a week. You should figure out a long term solution. --Squirrelloid 03:28, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you very much...
If he comes back and starts again, don't hesitate to block him indefinitely. If they have never made any valid edits... and have made more than one malicious edit: Ban them forever. It should block their IP as well.
If they request to be unblocked... so be it. We will consider it.
Let me know if you have any troubles with him. :)
--Jamie 03:58, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

thanks a lot

For the Captain America news on the frontpage, spoiling the whole damn thing. Please DO NOT DO THAT ANYMORE! I can understand that you want to add it to the news, but don't give away the whole thing in the title. Lots of people haven't read the issue yet (including me), so next time make it something like "Something big happens in Captain America #25". --Tokus 21:18, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I am sorry Tokus, I have replied on your talk page.

Comic Template linked off the "Templates" page

So, the page Marvel Database:Comic Template is the one you get if you go from Main->Templates->Comic Template. While that is the actual Comic Template code, its not going to be of much use to anyone who doesn't understand how it works. It also violates the instructions on the Templates page (you can't copy and paste it). I do recall seeing a page by you Jamie that had copyable text that would activate the Comic Template - shouldn't that be linked off the Templates page (so most people can actually use it effectively)? (I'd do it, but I can't find the page anymore). --Squirrelloid 20:48, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I believe the page you are looking for is Template:Comic Template. I have been looking for you on MSN yesterday and today, I am hoping you and Matt can verify the character and comic templates are accurate.
Once you tell me they are ready I will add the Create a New Page
--Jamie 01:35, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh... FYI

Just so you know, I do a lot of my editing while I'm at work (yeah, I'm naughty), and my company doesn't allow us to install IM on our systems. So if you IM me and I don't respond, I'm not being rude, I just haven't received it yet.

While I got yer attention, there appears to be a bug in the Create a Page sidebar. Whenever you try to create a new article it auto-directs to the Main Page. Also, on the comic-issue template, is there maybe a way to condense some of the empty space between sections? It just looks... weird. I know you're probably already on top of it, but I figured I would just put it out there anyway. See-ya! --Brian Kurtz 18:37, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

I see there is made a category "Civil war Characters" at Spider-Man, but is that a must? I mean how far want we go, you also can make a category: the Other, Secret wars, Inferno etc etc. It's not that I don't like the idea but how far must we go?? Peter Wildenbeest 22:22, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree... that category is a little too far... :)
--Jamie 01:16, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Comic Template redux

So, in my quest to improve the comic template, i did the following: (1) archived the code with comments so i could see if removing them solved the whitespace issue. (2) Eliminated comments from Marvel Database:Comic Template for the most part. Whitespace is gone from Infobox and greatly reduced under Synopsis. (3) Added the Category:Comic Template to the template, so that we could track which comics had been updated. Unfortunately, despite it appearing in the upper (block) list of categories on the comic pages, it doesn't appear in the enumerated list below that (where it shows the category nestings), nor does the category actually show any comics. (See link above) --Squirrelloid 21:41, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Correction - i was breaking the display of conditional headers. I fixed the infobox 'whitespace' problem, but i can't do anything about the other whitespace without causing the headers for stories after 1 to not display properly. (I tried!) --Squirrelloid 22:55, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
You've done a great job! I might just need your help on another project I am working on shortly. ;)
As always, let me know if you think of anything else!
--Jamie 16:09, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello Jamie. Well, Gunpedia isn't a very active wiki by any means - we basically have 3 contributers and a few other occasional contributers including myself. Right now we're focusing on improving the quality of the wiki, and we just might need a bit of help there since some of the pages made aren't up to par in formatting and such with the stuff that some of the more advanced people have made(Brain40 and Rotairebo, whose name I hope I spelled correctly). Thank you very much. --User:Jocke Pirat/sig 00:50, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

You and I should talk... I can 'mentor' you about the best/fastest ways to encourage growth on your wiki. :)
Do you have Skype or MSN Messenger?
--Jamie 01:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
I've got an IRC channel, gmail account(jaythenotsosilent [at] gmail [dot] com), and two websites that you can contact me through, but I don't have MSN messenger nor skype. --User:Jocke Pirat/sig 01:39, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

User:Rozky moved the Mister Immortal page on top of Dr. Renee Majcomb - I don't know how to tell if the Dr. Renee Majcomb page had unique data beforehand, or if I can retrieve it if it did. Arg! Recent changes claimed: "The last content of this page was merged with another, so now is empty)", which sounds ominously bad to me. --Squirrelloid 23:22, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Looks like you got this sorted out, right?
--Jamie 01:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Thief and illegal use of text writen by me and other users of

I just noticed that a member of your group stole Prodigy (Richie Gilmore) bio writen by me from official wiki. I'm now telling you to remove my text that the other guy stole form Also the last image of the profile that I made and uploaded to It can be seen in my own user page in This is direct violation of copyright law and I suggest you delete that bio immediatly. --Wezqu 23:04, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

It's seems everything this thief "Kalen Rann" has uploaded is stolen from many of them is made by me like Hornet bio and maybe even several others I just checking what else. This is not the first time this has happened. --Wezqu 23:11, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for coming to me with this information, I will certainly notify him that this is unacceptable behaviour. I have a favour to ask of you as well, please, would you explicitly list the offending edits for me below? By having a complete list, I can be sure not to miss fixing one. :)
In future, you also have the option of editing out any such infractions if you find any.
Kind Regards,
--Jamie 00:12, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Well here's those that I found in short notice.
Mysterio (Quentin Beck) "bio copied from"
Mysterio (Fanchis Klum) "bio copied from"
Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) "bio copied from"
Prodigy (Richie Gilmore) "bio copied from and originally made by me"
image:Prodigy "made by me and I want it deleted from the site"
Hornet (Eddie McDonough) "bio copied from and originally made by me"
image:Hornet "made by me and I want it deleted from the site"
Also you should warn Copycat989 to he was the one who copied those ::Mysterio bios.
I have also edited the pages and have spoken to both parties on this issue.--M1shawhan 02:14, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey Jamie! I've taken note of the copyright issues. Shall I remove the text from Mysterio (Fanchis Klum) ? I had it from wikipedia not Cheers Copycat989 04:53, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey Copycat!
If the text was found on Wikipedia, it has been released under GFDL and can be safely used on our site. Provided, of course, we reference Wikipedia as the source. :)
--Jamie 16:07, 21 April 2007(UTC)

No Jamie on that you are wrong. It was copied from ro wikipedia. How do I know this you say, because once again it was writen by me for and some guy added it to wikipedia. I understand that copycat wasn't the one who originally copied it then if it was taken from wikipedia but still it was originally taken from and it was writen by me and I didn't give the permision to either site to use it. I'm not blaming him on the matter. --Wezqu 00:14, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
So be it, the person who took the information from Wikipedia obviously had no way of knowing it was wrongly taken at the time.
--Jamie 02:37, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, What parts of Black Widow should I delete? Is it just the pics? I don't think I copied any text. Also, as for the Mysterio (Quentin Beck) & Mysterio (Francis Klum) I've never edited those profiles. I checked my contribution tab and there is no record. I also cleaned up the Prodigy page. I'll attempt to be more careful in the future and I'll remember to put what my sources are from now on. --::User: Kalen Rann 23:12, April 23 2007

It is entirely possible you didn't edit those pages. The gentleman from simply said those pages were problematic, but he may have only seen that you edited one or two of them. Just do your best...
The way to find what to remove is to head over to and see where our page matches up to theirs. If there are verbatim copies of text, we can remove those immediately.
Images are a bit different... If you find custom images, those can probably be tagged for deletion, but most normal images from are canon images from comics and can probably stay.
Let me know if you have any other specific questions. :)

Dutch site

Hey Jamie, check this out please, I've translated everything for the template: and this But I can't find out why it is not working, Greets!! Peter Wildenbeest 16:54, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

It is not perfect, but let me know if this works. If I have translated anything wrong, please let me know so I can fix it.

Hi Jamie, You did a great job! Thanks, The translation is no problem. I can fix that. But I only need your help again for the comic template. But no hurry.... fix it when you have the time for it. Cheers! Peter Wildenbeest 16:12, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

This history problem is caused because of a typo.
Which is correct: GeschiedenisText or GeschiedenidsText ?

Marvel Database:Voting Booth

Hey Jamie! I've created this page, as you suggested. Can you link it somewhere, like main page or menu sidebar, so or users could see it & vote? Pretty please. Copycat989 13:33, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

I have been working on some 'structure' stuff for the database lately. I will find a nice way to include the voting booth... Give me a small bit of time to think about how to best do that. :)
Great work!

Character Template

1 change - add "Current Codename" or something similar so we can be ready for the change to Real Names. --M1shawhan 04:22, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Great Idea!
I didn't even think of that.
Man, I am very worried about this whole revamp of names and universes and such. We need to really watch our step or we could seriously screw this up... :S
--Jamie 04:27, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
I steps on this one. I put the comment out to the group on the forum to possibly hold on any changes yet and to use Squirrel's page for the character list so we can finalize all the names before we even change em. --M1shawhan 04:32, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Good thinking! I hope Peteparker got your message as well. I think he is anxious to start moving pages... as are we all...
--Jamie 04:34, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
I did, and I need some kind of restraints for my fingers to keep myself from doing it! If anyone's checkin up on me, they'll notice that I'm holding back as much as I can, but OCD's a bad word. Soon I'll be whining like a toddler, "How much longer?" Who am I kidding, that's basically what I'm doing here.
Peteparker 07:33, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
No worries... Do your best. Remember, the more you do now, the more we will need to undo later. :)
We are all a little OCD and ITCHING to get started!
You can do it, hang in there!

Text Size? Gah

The text of everything got tiny sometime today in the last 3 hours. What's going on? --Squirrelloid 21:42, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Outside The Boxes

Just curious (since this is a database of all things Marvel), are you looking to do just within the Marvel Universe, or are you looking to add info on other things? Like artists, toys, events, etc. I had a few specific ones in mind, but don't dare say them aloud for someone beat me to the punch. So I thought I'd ask in general and I'll show you what I mean later. --JohnQ.Public 19:56, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Adding onto this in response in case you get this before email. An example of the material I wanted to add is No Prize. Check your mail and get back to me when you can. --JohnQ.Public 17:05, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Dutch is also a very cool language. Should I wright something???

Thor Disambig change

Okay, I cant tell, what did you change, its driving me nuts! Thanks though. - The preceding unsigned comment was added by ThorZero (talk • contribs).

The change I made was to fix a broken link. The Thor (Eric Masterson) page doesn't exist, but the Thunderstrike (Eric Masterson) page does. :)
Let me know if you still have questions...
--Jamie 23:10, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Gracias y felices nupcias. Rozky

Ah! I finally get what you and others have been telling me about move vs. cut/paste! The only reasons I've really ever done that was because the move I was attempting was not working, or the page I'm moving to already exists. I often get an HTTP timeout when I'm attempting one of these kinds of moves. So in order to make sure the history/discussion pages are transferred as well, a move is required. In the cases of a pre-existing page that I'm attempting to move to, what is the procedure? Is the pre-existing page supposed to be marked for deletion, and then I move the original page once is has been deleted?

I also had a small question about images. What kind of copyrights do we need to be careful of, and what needs to be done to or included with the picture in order to make it completely legal?

Thanks again!
Peteparker 18:36, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

The HTTP timeouts I can't explain other than possibly server response time.
You are exactly right, it is the histories and discussions. ;)
When pre-existing pages exist, its a tough call. Usually, the existing page is usually a stub, in which case you can merge any data that might already exist, along with the discussion. Once that is done, contact an admin directly and have us delete it so you don't have to wait for the To Be Deleted category to do its thing...
As for images, you can primarily only upload images that have been used in comics, or in promotional materials. These images are considered 'fair use'. If someone has manipulated an image, (photoshop or otherwise) the image cannot usually be used as 'fair use' and explicit permission needs to be granted form the creator. (Permission is always ideal)
Tags for Character Image and GFDL or Comic Single Panel should be added as applicable. These can be hard sometimes, so let me know if you have any specific questions.
--Jamie 23:04, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Image Size, huh?

Check out: Uncanny X-Men 236, Uncanny X-Men 248, and Uncanny X-Men 289. I thought the template resized images... it certainly seems to for comics like Uncanny X-Men 168 (whose image file is larger than any of the problem pages. There are a number of other potentially effected pages for UXM (i've been trying to remove unnecessary images - we have a bunch of UXM cover duplicates), and I'm afraid I might 'break' more pages in the process. Let me know if you have a clue as to what's going on. --Squirrelloid 07:53, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Found the problem... although you really had me crapping my pants there for a minute. :)
It turns out the problem is that we were setting ImageSize = 300 , instead of ImageSize = 300px.
Essentially, it requires the 'px'.
What do you think? Should I go back and remove the 'px' requirement, so all you need is the number?
--Jamie 14:35, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Basically, just keep doing what you are doing!
These guys have been working hard here on the project for months and months.

You're welcome Jamie

You're welcome.
I barely come on this and noticed this idiot put the movies plots into the comics and I had to change was so stupid.
I tried to delete his Venom (Spider-Man 3) one, but all I could do was erase what he put, not delete the whole page. I don't know how to do that.
But again, welcome.
--AaronPaige 1:58, 17 May 2007 (EST)
All you have to do to 'delete' an article is add and an admin will take care of it. (Only admins can delete, for obvious vandalism reasons...)
Welcome aboard!
--Jamie 06:03, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

How embarassing that is! To be honest, I've never seen either of those referenced sites before, and only copied info from the Earth-616 article and the universe article (I think that was the second one). I didn't actually write any of the information in Multiverse, but I was beginning to make all the applicable links. I'm more than happy to help put things right, but I need to know what is wrong. Can we just put those two sites as references at the bottom? Do we need a new way to list the universes? Do the universes need new descriptions? Let me know what I can do, and I'll be happy to do all the work associated with it. The Multiverse idea is a personal favorite of mine (In case you couldn't tell by all the alt-universe characters I've been editing). I looked at the other two sites, but am having a hard time finding the copyright infringement. Thanks for all the help you can provide,Peteparker 20:05, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

The subtleties of copyright law are indeed tricky. Probably too long to explain here on my talk page. Drop me an email and we can talk about it at further length.
No worries... everyone makes mistakes with copyrights now and again. (Lawyers included!)
We will work together to make it right. :)

Deadpool (Ultimate)

Should this character be using the sites' template, or the one it already is? Thanks!
Peteparker 21:32, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Definitely the new template. The other template was brought over from when we acquired Wikia's Marvel comics wiki. I have added the cleanup to my todos. :)
No worries...

Image:Venom 001.jpg

Hi Jamie! CleverGuy here. Is Image:Venom 001.jpg a picture of Eddie Brock or MacDonald Gargan? Greetings, The Clever Guy (Talk/Contribs) 18:10, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Judging by the style of artwork and by my vague recollection of the image, I would place the image somewhere in the early to mid 90s... Therefore Eddie.
I am not a terribly big Venom fan, so I could be mistaken.
The image was uploaded several months after Gargan's first apperance as Venom, so in theory it could be either.
--Jamie 19:07, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Then I would think it's Eddie. (Mag Gargan has visible eyes in venom form, but I just wanted to make sure, that image was placed in Mac Gargans gallery.) Great, thank you, The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 19:45, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

--MarvelFrogg: That is deffinently Eddie Brock, Jamie is correct its from the 90's You can tell the difference between the two by different torso spider symbols and different eye decorations. That is deffiently Brock ;)

MarvelFrogg, you seem very knowledgable. :)
Glad to have you aboard!
--Jamie 20:15, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Lol thanks, I do know alot, its just I need to get a hang of this website, writing in HTML and all, I should be able to figure it out by tonight, thanks again for the kind words MarvelFrogg 20:19, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Completely rewritten. Format's the same, but I went through every sentance and worded them differently. Hope that helps!
Peteparker 22:08, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Well yeah,
But I can't say as we are done.
The way that we should deal with such instances is to remove the data, then rebuild it piece by piece from research.
We should continue to refine the work as we go with original research.
Plagiarism is a sticky situation. We should do our best to cite our new sources as we go.
Don't worry, we will work at it together...
Thank you Peteparker, you have worked hard. :)

Greetings from Comic Series Wikia

Hi Jamie. Thanks for stopping by over at Comic Series. This is quite an extensive Marvel wiki you have here! --Davidscarter 14:34, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks so much Davidscarter!
We have been working really hard to make a nice site for fans to enjoy.
With time, comics.wikia will build as many or more articles as we have here!
--Jamie 03:52, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

What is this?

Jamie, I found this clip of info at the bottom of the Power Pack article. What is it?
--Peteparker 18:29, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Please remove that if you find it anywhere else. It is spam.
Basically spam-bots register accounts and post links to viagra and casinos on our database.
We have introduced new counter-measures and they don't come around much any more.
We are still finding remnants from back in the day... :(

From Phat01- about my last change

Sorry, I thought that was the page for Ultimate Wolverine(I recently found out Ultimate was seperate continuity, recently I was introduced to Marvel so I don't know much). Sorry I will buy some handbooks, to keep in check with info.

Mover Articulos

Image Needed

Will the template take care of the Image needed category if there is no image inserted? --Peteparker 17:34, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Funny you should ask that, as until yesterday, it didn't, but it does now!
I am also planning to allow the template to add to pages that have no 'HistoryText'.
I will have to add all this stuff to the notes on the template itself, because the only people that really know about all this fancy stuff are the few of us who built the template.
Check back to the notes section of the template soon and you will see all the fancy features the template does do and does not do. :)
--Jamie 18:54, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
Didn't you mean Category:Article Request? (Isn't Copy Edit a category for articles that are just out-of-date or whatever?)
And how does the fit in to the character template? For now, it seems like it categorizes characters to . That doesn't make sense, because a bald person does not have any hair. Greetings, The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 15:55, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Yes, you are right. I said Copy Edit, but indeed it is Article Request. :)
As for Bald... that is on my todo list. I will just have to wrap the 'Hair' variable in a 'if' statement for Bald.
Shouldn't be hard.
Then I will delete every entry in that silly 'Bald Hair' category.
So silly. ;)

naming changes message

Jamie, you might want to check the code for the "Marvel Database will soon undergo a big change" thing - every page is displaying the note "This page may need to be merged with Mockingbird. Please see Merge:Index for information."

-- Roygbiv666 19:55, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
That is some kind of software bug I think, or a caching problem.
Not everyone sees it, but I have heard some users say something similar.
I will tidy that up now, once and for all! ;)
Thanks kindly!

Film characters

Hi Jamie! I was wondering if there should be any separate articles for characters who appear in films. I mean, I guess that the film's universe also have some place in the Multiverse (even if they're not given a designation). For example:

The reason that I thought about this is that some characters differs (or at least their character histories) to much from the comics and the movies (Venom (Eddie Brock) and Gwen Stacy are pretty good examples). What do you think? Greetings, The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 16:02, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

This is tougher than one might think.
It is definitely non-canon, but they do exist in their own world.
Is Mr Fantastic from the 1994 movie the same as the one from the 2004 movie?
Also, is he the same as the one that may appear in an animated FF movie?
Or the FF tv cartoon?
How many 'versions' of him are there?
It might be better to do something like Mister Fantastic (Animated Movie), Mister Fantastic (Films 2004, 2008).
That isn't really pretty.
MAYBE what we could do is get Marvel to give official universe numbers for the movies and cartoons. :)
I'll look into it...
--Jamie 17:40, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. Thank you, The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 17:49, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
In the Multiverse article, there is an Earth-Designation for the Spider-Man movies:
"Earth-200253 Spider-Man (Movie) Earth-assignation of the Spider-Man movie universe."
They don't have one for every type of movie or video game yet, but at least there are a few in there. When I merged all of the articles on the Multiverse into one, those designations were included. (I didn't make them up on my own) --Peteparker 18:26, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
When i checked the Multiverse article, I saw that every movie universe listed had an assagnation that was a description (or something very near) of the release dates for the first films (for example, Spider-Man was released 3 May 2002). So, if there are going to be an article for the X-Men Movie's Jean Grey, for example, the title for that page must be Jean Grey (Earth-2000714). Greetings, The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 19:13, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Interesting stuff...
Once we have compiled a 'comprehensive' list, I will try and speak with Tom Brevoort and see what he has to say about it.
Before I do that, let's make sure we have the 'best' list available...
Even better than Marvel's own list! ;)

Image Gallery

Me entiendes? A veces, hablo como un borracho. :)
--Jamie 00:20, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
No me salio, mejor se lo dejo a alguien que sepa lo que hace... y si es cierto hablas como borracho.

Name formatting

Hey Jamie, i'm just wondering, what exactly will the new name formatting be and will characters like Electro (Maxwell Dillon) become just Maxwell Dillon, i've been confused lately with all the movement around, i have jsust trying to concentrate on updating the templates. Is there anything I can do to help ?and things i shouldn't do ? -- Maxdillon 04:08, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

You are absolutely right, things have been moving around a lot lately.
I would suggest focusing on content rather than naming, for the time being.
We are discussing the new naming conventions here.
In order to avoid double-duty, the one thing I can suggest is to avoid creating new sub-pages such as 'Electro/Gallery' since it might end up moving to 'Maxwell Dillon/Gallery'.
For now we have a few folks working on establishing all the names of articles. (Links to the lists are in the forum topic)
Let me know if you have any questions, but all I am doing these days is updating articles to templates, not moving things around.
We will make a clear post when we are ready to being moving things around...
--Jamie 04:12, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
One thing that I will mention, since we are all on here at the same time, is maybe we can help finish one project, since it is VERY close to being done. The Merge:Index page is only needing the "S" articles merged and that is IT!!! This would be greatly appreciated on my behalf. --M1shawhan 04:17, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Image & Dark Horse Database Projects... ?

I saw you have this listed as high priority. What if we start adding then here, instead of making another 2 databases. It would be easier. And we would just need to add to them an Image/Dark Horse Category. I have some withchblade, Vampirella & Lady Death pics I crave to upload. :p Copycat989 06:46, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Nope, sorry.
The domains are bought, it is only a matter of when I have some time to set up the databases.
There may come a day when all of the databases become a single site, but that day is not today.
Sorry Copycat, we have a lot on our plate right now with all the upgrades and new coming features. (Blogs/News/Voting Booths)
The Image and Dark Horse Databases should probably be a low priority.

DC Database Beta Search

I'm sure you already know, but the DC Database Search function (Beta) is a bit screwy right now - whatever I search only seems to return the Main Page a bazillion times. Also, whenever I try modifying an article I get "Sorry! We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data. Please try again. If it still doesn't work, try logging out and logging back in."

--Roygbiv666 15:36, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Oh yes...
I am very aware. :(
Wikia, as awesome as they are, sometimes have some trouble with 'upgrades'.
I have contacted them and I am sure they will sort it out shortly. :)
If you want, you can post these in the 'bugs' forum on the Marvel Forums (the DC Forums will be integrated into the Marvel Forums soon anyways)
Thanks Roygbiv666!

--Jamie 23:13, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

DC Database links

The function that creates a link to articles on the DC Database seems to be messed up. I'm pretty sure it worked before. For example, if you check out this section of the Avengers entry, the links all have "index.php/" or something added to them. Am I crazy?

Roygbiv666 01:38, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
You aren't crazy at all.
I have added this to the list of Wikia upgrade bugs.
If you find anything else, post them in the forum here.

Warned Users

Jamie, is there a time limit on the "warned users" category. Just wondering, I am being asked to remove the category from a user's page as the errors they were warned for have been corrected. Not sure if the category was needed for tracking purposes. If not, User:Rozky was wanting this to be done. --M1shawhan 03:47, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Should be okay to remove it now.
I think we need a better system of tracking this than the one I came up with...
If you have any ideas, let me know. :)

Ja ja, Estan cayendo en mi juego... I mean, thankyou very much.
--Jamie 16:16, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Other Media Characters

Jamie, I rarely take a look at too much on the DCDP, but I must say, I REALLY like what has been done in the handling of other media characters and I think the MDP should follow in kind. See DCDP:Lex Luthor (Smallville) for an example of what I mean. Let me know what you think. --M1shawhan 19:51, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

I agree, Brian and Roygbiv have been doing great work over there.
I think Marvel has assigned universe numbers to some of the shows/movies... so that should fit in with our new naming conventions nicely. Any ones they haven't, we can ask them to assign numbers to.
--Jamie 02:50, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Jamie I think we should get all the wrters of Marvel and have party. Also we should have one month where we get Stan Lee to write one issue of every series. Also maybe since none of us seem to know that much about many of the writers, we should get all of the writers to try and do it themseelves. User:MutantKingMagneto :I am not sure what you mean by having a 'party' with Marvel writers. You know that we don't work for Marvel, right? We are just a bunch of fans, such as yourself.

Stan Lee just signed a deal with Disney, I don't think he will be writing stories for Marvel any more...
I don't know what you mean that we don't know about the writers... some of us know plenty about the writers.
Please try to be clear with your ideas... sometimes it is hard for the other person who is reading to understand what you mean to say. :)
Keep your ideas coming though!
--Jamie 02:50, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Could you unprotect the Spider-Man article so edits can be made? --Magnus 04:29, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Done. (I assume you meant Spider-Man (Peter Parker), not Spider-Man)
This shouldn't happen again in future as our software now allows for auto-expiration of page protections.
Before, we had to remember which pages we locked to go back and unlock them later... :(
Should be good to go. :)
--Jamie 04:47, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you. --Magnus 04:50, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

You can strike out 2 more to-dos...Merge:Index has all been moved (FINALLY! WHEW) along with all the superhero boxes from the old site. You can mark that off your todo list as well. Now I can start working on the naming conventions. --M1shawhan 05:14, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Those have been a thorn in our side since we absorbed the other wiki!
If there are indeed no further references to the superherobox, I plan to NUKE IT.
Our template is much nicer. ;)
Thank you again!

I hope you savoured hitting the 'delete' button for the both of us.

Hey Jamie! I want you to add the new team template to the DC Database Project. It would be appreciated (little synchronization wouldn't be bad). Greetings, The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 08:15, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Bien hecho... :)

Delete template

I was just wondering, do you guys have a delete template? I couldn't find one when I searched for it, but its entirely possible I missed it. --Pinky49

We don't actually, but I should create one.
Usually, we just add , its a lot more typing than deleteme (or similar) would be...
I will add that to my todos! :)
--Jamie 03:44, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
I can make it. Pinky49Talk
Awesome! Thanks! :)
--Jamie 04:23, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok, its done. Modify it as neccessary, I tried to make it like the other templates here. Pinky49Talk
Stupendous! I will make a copy for the DC Database to use and lock it down tight.
Thanks again! Cheers,
--Jamie 04:33, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok. Would you like me to add the template to all pages currently in the category? Pinky49Talk
Your call. ;)
It might be hard to come up with the 'reasons', this late.
It will likely be more useful for new pages up for deletion in the future.
--Jamie 04:37, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
True. If I did, I'd probably just add the template with no summary. Pinky49Talk

  • Just a question, why are you adding cleanup and framework templates to all these pages that are protected? Other users can't fix them if their protected. Pinky49Talk
The reason I am doing that is two-fold. Some of the pages to be cleaned up are critical and cannot be allowed to be edited by non-administrative users. Secondly, I am usually the one who does everything related to this smaller stubs and templates. Basically, tagging these pages for clean-up is basically a reminder for myself. :)
--Jamie 13:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know the answer, but I suggest that there should be a template for suggested moves. For example:
What do you think? The Clever Guy (TalkContribs) 11:51, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
We have something similar now (although not exact): xyz & abc
We probably should have such a template. We are in the process of undergoing a HUGE overhaul of our page-naming conventions. Within a few weeks will be moving literally ten thousand pages to new names.
Tagging each article, then moving it will be twice the work. :(
This template will be AWESOME for once the overhaul is complete, though! :)
--Jamie 13:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
  • When you get to it, I designed a quote template that is improved. Here's the code:
:<span {{#if:{}|title="Source: {}"|}}>"{}"</span>
:—{} {{#if:{}|[[{}|[src]]]}}<noinclude>__NOTOC__
Usage instructions
basically, it just adds a source field. Adjust it as needed, and if you need assistance I can help. Pinky49Talk

Buena suerte!
--Jamie 23:26, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliment. Really, I have to thank whoever created the template. So easy to use! - The preceding unsigned comment was added by Edlicious (talk • contribs).

That is EXACTLY what I like to hear! We were hoping that the new templates were easier than typing all that out by hand...
The templates were created by joint-effort of a few of us.

Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe

I tried to edit the link to Black Cat on that page so it would go to the correct version, Felicia Hardy (Earth-616), but due to the million ISBN number listings, the spam filter wouldn't let it go through. Are we going to have to remove those ISBN numbers, or how do I fix it?--Peteparker 15:14, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

The ISBN links are actually internal and weren't causing the problemo.
It turns out it was a single link to, which I have removed.
It should be fixed now! ;)

Category:X-Men film actors

I just found a lot more work. This category isn't supposed to exist, right? I'm pretty much eliminating the information about the guy who played Jamie Madrox, but I'm adding the character (Jamie Madrox (Earth-2000714)) to the new disambig page as a minor. Hope I'm doing it right!--Peteparker 20:41, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, that will be fine for now. :)
--Jamie 00:41, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Also, there's no Earth-Designation for the X-Men Legends games, so I'm leaving the info in with Jamie Madrox (Earth-616) for now. Any progress on getting these universes numbered?--Peteparker 20:53, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

No progress yet. Do your best... Squirrelloid and Matt are the ones to ask one this one.
--Jamie 00:41, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
No word from my camp - not sure that Squirrelloid has a fix on this issue either. I think the way you handled those was perfect. I also like the fact that you took initiative and took on the daunting task of the what links here. I hate the fact that I posted these notes on your talk page Jamie and the fact that I am not stopping writing this knowing that fact. ;) --M1shawhan 04:42, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

No Prize Merry Marvel Marching Society

Hey Jamie, I was trying to categorize these pages, but was having trouble deciding if they were non-canon. Are we keeping this information on the site?--Peteparker 04:47, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

These are fine, but we definitely need to come up with an appropriate category structure for them.
Maybe something like: Category:Marvel Database -> Category:Real World -> Category:Organizations ?

I am sure he just meant to attach it to his user page: User:Sunshine Souperman/Fan Art (I moved it for him)
We are certainly allowed to upload fan-art, provided it is appropriately licensed, categorized and only placed in designated areas of the database, or on your user page, in this case.

" images"

See User talk:Peter luzifer for my feelings on this and my summation of the legal issues involved. ie, we're in the clear, and there's no reason we can't use the images. If they want to take it up with Marvel (who holds the copyright), they're welcome to, but Marvel has no reason to tell us to remove them and not tell the same to --Squirrelloid 21:08, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Any way we can get a protect on the Colossus page (As "Piotr Rasputin (Earth-616)")? User:The Forest has now moved it 2x, once to "Peter Rasputin", before my revert, and then to "Peter Rasputin (Earth-616), which it currently is. Thanks --Blizz79 06:21, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

--Jamie 23:03, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jamie, just a note - I just discovered that you reverted the "Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde)" move done by TheForest. I didn't check out who moved the page to the Katherine Pryde (Earth-616) name and thought it was some official action in the context of the new renaming process. I already started to move the subpages, clean double redirects and to adjust the disamb page accordingly and asked JamieBot to do the main work, but I will stop immediately until the final decision is made. Incredible Nightcrawler 16:34, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Does this page go on the English site?
--Peteparker 00:49, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Looks like a mistake.
I checked the Dutch Database and Peter has already finished moving that page over.
I have marked this to be deleted.

Should we be taking the versions of Janet van Dyne who don't use the codename: Wasp out of the Wasp Disambig? (This is more of a question for all the Codename Disambigs)--Peteparker 21:03, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Name Links

While tackling some of the priority move pages, I've noticed that it's helpful for the Name in the Character's main (Earth-616) article to be a link to the Disambig page for their name. Can we put this into the Template? (I also put this in the Stabilizing Name forum topic, in case you wanted to talk about it before implementing it)--Peteparker 23:03, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Not a bad idea at all! ;)

Trying to help

Lately, I've been trying to set up the new Disambig format for characters on the priority move list without actually moving any of the existing pages, so some of the groundwork will be completed for whoever gets to them next. I did end up moving a few pages that had little or no information to minor characters, but I've been trying to make sure I update all the links to those pages. My real question is, should I not be setting up these disambigs until the names are hashed out?--Peteparker 21:54, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Quasar (Wendell Vaughn (Earth-616)/Gallery

Should be in Wendell Vaughn (Earth-616)/Gallery I may have been the one to move it incorrectly in the first place, sorry.--Peteparker 21:54, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

The Question I Forgot

In the Naming conventions, it says: "*If real name is given:

    • Real Name consists of: "First name" "Used name" (if not the same as first name) "Surname" "Jr" (if applicable). None of the names should be shortened in any way. Monet St.Croix, Robert Bruce Banner, James MacDonald Jr, Robert Drake (instead of Bobby), etc"

Does this mean that Captain America will be Steven "Steve" Rogers? There a lot of characters like this, Anthony "Tony" Stark, Samuel "Sam" Wilson, Robert "Bobby" Drake? I kind of see that it won't be that way from typing it out, but this probably still means that the Naming Conventions should be just a little more clear. Middle Names being allowed if they are used as first names, but Shortened versions of first names not being allowed. "Used Name" could really mean either one. Maybe just change Used Name to Middle Name if we're not using Used Names?--Peteparker 22:01, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, that sounds good. :)
It needs to be rewritten a bit for clarity...
--Jamie 02:29, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Not to butt in, but I think that Ouchmaker and Squirrelloid put that note on not for "Anthony 'Tony' Stark"...but for using Anthony (middle name used) Stark. This would be if we know Tony Stark's middle name. Nicknames were what are trying to be avoided like Tony Stark or Anthony "Tony" Stark - these would not be used. --M1shawhan 05:03, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
This isn't my talk page, but I welcome other opinions, so I say, feel free to Butt.--Peteparker 14:41, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Agreed, all input, always welcome!
Also agreed, no nicknames if possible...

Image editing

Hey Jamie! Wikipedia has an "Upload a new version of this file" function (open a random Wikipedia image and you'll see), while the Marvel and DC Database haven't (and the "Edit this file using an external application" function is very hard to use). Do you know how to change that? Would be great. Thank you, The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 13:37, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Jamie, this would be a good add. PLUS seems easy and I also like the image tag found here. The picture is creepy, but gets the point across (the tag directly below his pic). This would also take care of a few "issues" that we are seeing pop up recently. --M1shawhan 00:54, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Oddly enough, we used to have the 'upload a new version' function. I purposefully disabled this because users were uploading totally different images for whatever reason. :(
Images of Captain America (CapAm001.jpg or whatever) were being overwritten with a picture of Elektra or something whacked.
It wasn't pretty... I figured better to let the admins (myself and copycat) really manage the images.
I'd consider reversing this decision, but I'd like to see a better image handling process in place first.

User:Squirrelloid/Master Name List

Could we modify the Template:Gallery Listing and save it for the master name list to make the list easer to navigate? Or is that piles of work?--Peteparker 14:41, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

This is piles of work, but definitely worth the effort.
I have been meaning to get to this, but it is just 1 of 1000 things on my todo. :(
--Jamie 01:18, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Captain America

What do you think of the centering in the gallery?

What do you also think of losing the Distinguishes and leaving it up to the reader to click on the various codenames and real names to go to the disambigs? Now that we're having disambigs for most names (Unless there's only one), the links might be easier. Plus, I think it looks prettier. Check Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), but ignore the Move statement.--Peteparker 19:54, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I certainly didn't like the HUGE notice at the top of every Captain America page, but it isn't quite as obvious.
Remember, those of us who already know there are several Hawkeye's will clue in immediately, but someone who is just reading comics for the first time, might not intuitively understand the link the clicking on.
Let's think about it for a bit...
Is there a better way? (Do both somehow?)

Incredible Nightcrawler has been diligently hashing out a lot of the Excalibur pages (like this) and I wanted him to get some credit, PLUS take a look at the page - what do you think about the comic displays throughout the article. I noticed Brian Kurtz using it and the templates for cameo, first app., etc...and I think Nightcrawler took off with that process. Do we still have one of those "best article" vote pages like I think I saw way back when? --M1shawhan 23:42, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Only 2 Featured Images? on the Main Page

Jamie I love what you've done to the news section, because now everyone can update it, not only us, but I'd like to squeeze in an image in that news section just like before. It looks kind of empty without it. The Main page looked pretier before :((. What do you say oh great ruler of MDP? Copycat989 09:04, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Okay, you can put one back in, but it shouldn't be any wider than 100px.
Wikipedia seems to have a 100px wide policy too. Our image in that box was squishing all the text.
I cannot allow it to squish the text, but 100px should be fine, I think. :)
--Jamie 01:34, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Jamie. I'll reduce the other images to 100px too, and keep this format. Copycat989 09:41, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Newb Question

Since I've been here about a week now, I figured I'd drop a line to say Hello. I like what your doing here and would like to contribute what I can. I am a Wiki Newb, So I'll try not to make too much of a mess.

So, in the spirit of not making too much of a mess, I have a question. I've been running thru a series (Marvel Team-Up Vol. 1) Adding character Appearances/Cast information. Now when I run across a character that is clearly identifiable and has a full name(I'm talking mostly about the non-super powered "normal" people with on 1 or 2 appearences to date), Should I:

  • Create a character page and throw a stub in there?
    • And if I do decide to throw a template in there should it be a normal or minor character template?
  • Add the character to the Cast list and create an x/appearances page?

Or do you want to not be bothered with this most trivial information?

Sorry if this has been outlined elsewhere. For the record I've been doing both above.

Thanks, Gregaroo 20:31, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Jamie - just wondering why you are manually changing the stubs and not using the bot? --M1shawhan 02:02, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Too complex for the bot. :(
If the page already has SOME data, I am trying to incorporate it all.
I suppose the bot could handle it, but it would take 100 hours to write all that logic into the bot!
Just as fast to do it manually... plus more satisfying. ;)
If it were the bot, it would be JamieBot you would see...

Thanks man! I appreciate it, I was getting a bit frustrated, thanks for helping, haha!

Sweet Adds!

I LOVE the new additions on the Character template! In case you didn't notice tho, the articles with a pre-adds template are coming up with Errors in the Alignment fields. I also wondered if you could put the default number of Distinguish fields to two for me. I've noticed that most characters need a disambig for both their codenames and their real names, so that makes two. For instance, Peter Parker may not be Spider-Man in one universe, and Spider-Man might not be Peter Parker in another, so while they wouldn't go at the top of the disambig pages, I've been putting them under headings titled: Spider-Man Related or Peter Parker Related. Hope that makes sense. Let me know what I can do to help! I'm seeing big changes around here all the time!--Peteparker 05:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

I have fixed the bug with Alignment and made 2 distinguishes by default.
Great ideas, thank you!
Glad you like the adds!

Can we add the Minor Character Template to the little buttons above the the edit box?--Peteparker 22:00, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

I just haven't had an opportunity to make a little button image for it. ;)

--Jamie 05:17, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Wow, I need to go to school for the blind!--Peteparker 14:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Can we get the Distinguish feature put on the other templates as well? There are quite a few alternate Fantastic Four and X-Men teams out there. There's also even an alternate Attilan location!--Peteparker 14:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Good idea!
I will make it happen...
--Jamie 16:19, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

And when you do it, don't forget to do it on the DCDB as well! I've seen that the DCDB doesn't have the updatet character template with automatic distinguish tag, or a Thumbnavigation template at all. I've found a number of templates that are perfect (or close to it) here, but is not that perfect, or even missing, at DCDB. (Like the image template I found just some minutes ago.) BTW, could the user page template have a tag for the color of the infobox? I know that you may not like to have that kind of customized color on the character or team template, but I don't think it's the same problem with user pages. To be more clear, I have put a little list here on what I would like to have updated (on DC Database):

Hope that's not too much demanded... (I've would have done it myself if they hadn't required an admin...) By the way, I love the new skin! The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 19:12, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

When trying out the new way to name the minors, the edit button no longer takes you to the right page, it takes you to the Minor:________ version. ; ) --Peteparker

Disambig Template

I saw that you started converting the disambig pages to the template, and then I saw some things about the disambig template that were missing. I created a new disambig template Here with the things I thought were missing, and here is the test page. I used Peter Parker's current disambig page as a basis. Let me know if we can implement these additions into the regular disambig template, and I'll start using it all the time! : ) --Peteparker 20:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I like some aspects you added like 'Related', I have already been toying with the idea of adding a 'SeeAlso' field.
My only problem is with Gallery1, Gallery2, Gallery3, etc.
From experience with the character templates, it adds possibly unnecessary complexity.
Don't you think the 'freeform' style is easier and more flexible?
If it turns out there are 150 sections in a disambig (albeit unlikely) we have to add support for all that in the template, whereas if we allow one field and it is freeform, we don't need to handle any special cases.
Feel free to ask again on the forums if you like, but I think I will choose to vote against the 'Gallery1, Gallery2, Gallery3, etc.' part.
If I get out-voted, I will certainly reconsider. :)
Am I missing some reason why we need those?
--Jamie 23:55, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I completely understand your viewpoint. It's a great idea to keep it as simple as possible. The only reason I saw the need for multiple galleries is for instances like Captain Marvel, where multiple versions of multiple people had the same Code Name. It's certainly not used much, but if Ben Reilly ever happens to be Spider-Man in another reality, there's another one. (More don't come to mind at the moment). I wanted to rename them so this was more clear, but I was afraid the opposite could be true. (Henry Pym would probably be a decent example, being called Giant Man as well as Yellow Jacket and Ant Man in more than one reality, though his page isn't that complicated at the moment). I attempted to use the free form version, but I couldn't get the titles of each gallery to de-center (or is it un-center?). That's where the experiment in a new design originated. I'll pose the question on the forums, but I didn't get much of a response on the Race Template I made last time. (Probably because it wasn't all that useful or needed).--Peteparker 03:01, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
I know, I am sorry... that is party my fault.
We really should get that race template into full-swing action.
I have been crazy busy lately and I plan to make an announcement soon which will explain all.
Don't give up, the secret is to stay persistant!
--Jamie 02:32, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I will chime in one point that I have noticed myself just in moving pages around. Pages like Eson, would appear a little better if it had the titles on the left, as in Captain America. I think anything "inside" the gallery options should be centered (this is just my OCD in me) and then the remainder should be the adjustable variable. Would THAT be possible in the template? If so, then I think that would take care of most of what is being asked.
I will also say that I don't like the idea of the "multiple" galleries. People have enough trouble with using templates as it is (though it's not difficult...sheesh). In creating the disambigs though, it IS becoming more evident that they are needing some sort of separation or we will have disambigs for disambigs for disambigs... --M1shawhan 03:05, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I would also like titles to be left-justified, but there is no way I can see to do this without having to do: Gallery1, Gallery2, Gallery3
I suppose that is not that much more of a stretch than our much more complex character template.
--Jamie 04:03, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Promo cards

What is the projects stance on those little promotional cards announcing an upcoming comic book/series that are sometimes near/at the cash register at local comic book stores? Personally, I always grab one when it is a book I am currently reading or will get when it comes out for collectors sake. Case in point, I got one for the Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born comics before they start the series. I thought I would scan and upload it, but just wanted to see if there was policy on such things already or not. Cheers! GeorgeMcBain 20:32, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't see why they can't be uploaded and added to the article for the comic series.
Same for promotional posters for movies I figure...

Hey Jamie, if you're on here. . . I found that Rogue's real full name is Anna Marie, but I'm wondering if that makes her alternate reality counter-parts Anna Maries also. (At least the ones where she wasn't adopted or kept by Mystique, because in those, her name is legally changed to Anna Marie Darkholme.)--Peteparker 17:42, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh man, this is tough.

Are we. . .

Limiting the total amount of templates on the database? I'm mostly making them for practice (but I can't delete them on my own), and I agree that the Nonexistant Character Template was probably unneeded since the page it was used for is marked for deletion anyway. However, it did serve a purpose, even though it was only temporary. There were some disgruntled users arguing about if Phantom should be included on here or not. (You've probably heard about it). I guess it was a conceptual character that never saw print. The only thing the Nonexistant (which is spelled wrong) Template was allowing all that information to still exist without categorizing the character among real characters or providing links to any other page. (Two of the arguments). Let me know what you think. I created the Caution Template for really only two pages, Phantom and Omega-level, so you might want to look at that too and formulate some thoughts on it. --Peteparker 23:43, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

There are certainly no limits to the number of templates, but we should ensure the template will have a permanent, wide-spread usage, if possible.
If we expect it would only be used a couple times, it could be done manually, rather than in a template, if you like.
Might Template:Controversial work instead of Template:Caution?
--Jamie 02:33, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Wow that's probably much more succinct. Did that always exist? If so I need to open my eyes a bit more. I'll move the Phantom page over to Controversial, but I'm not sure it works completely for the Omega-level page. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
--Peteparker 21:44, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
I am lazy, so I'd use controversial...
I'll let you make that call. ;)
--Jamie 04:06, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Help, please.

How do I add subcategories? - The preceding unsigned comment was added by PiranhaSister (talk • contribs).

That's easy. Just create the subcategory just as it would be a normal category, then add the parent category at the bottom (Yes, I know this isn't my talk page, Jamie). The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 15:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Do you think we could change the default Title in the Character Template to a link to their CurrentAlias? Their real name is in large letters at the top of the page, and a lot of times, it doesn't seem necessary to have their full birth name and earth-designation twice at the top of the page. Check out Stephen Strange (Earth-616) for an example of the current template, and Bruce Banner (Earth-616) for an example of what I'm talking about. Maybe if the character's CurrentAlias is blank, it could either default back to the PAGENAME or how about to a link to the Real Name? : ) --Peteparker 21:36, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Good idea.
I had thought of doing the same myself, but never did.
So... now it's done. :)
--Jamie 04:06, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Awesome! Now that's service! If only the post office was as efficient as you are. . .
Could the Title possibly be a Link to the CurrentAlias? In most cases, the currentAlias is a disambig page anyway, and in those that aren't, it's a harmless redirect back to the current page.
What do you think?
--Peteparker 19:11, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
In cases where no disambig exists and no redirect exists, we would have a red link... (I'd bet this would be about 50% of cases)
Instead, I could work in some logic:
IF a page = CurrentAlias, then make a link... otherwise... don't.
Sound good?
--Jamie 19:41, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Sounds great! I know how people are not fans of the red links. I didn't know you could check to see if a page exists with the logic on here. Would that be a good thing to have for the Distinguish for their CurrentAlias' too? The Real name is probably a no-go since often times the real name includes the middle name or possibly Dr. or Prof.
I'm starting to think there's nothing that can't be done with this language, when I used to think it was pretty limited to creating wiki articles.
--Peteparker 22:03, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Could check that too...
It has more features than one might expect, eh?
--Jamie 23:14, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Done. :)
--Jamie 00:24, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

What do you think about this?

This is more like what I was talking about. The source code is here, and you can look at May Parker (Earth-982) for a comparison. I removed the need for Aliases altogether, but made it work with them already existing, and basically moved the distinguishes into the aliases area. I also made the title automatically become the CurrentAlias if it's been filled in, and a link to the CurrentAlias Disambig if it exists. I believe you've said that you don't like having the distinguishes in the info box because it may be too hard to see, but maybe seeing it will change your mind. (We could always bold them if they exist too) The only thing that looks crazy is the actual page name at the top of mine, so you have to use a little imagination on that part (eek!).
Thanks for the lookey-loo. --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 22:12, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Do you think we could keep more than 1000 of these on hand? I'd like to catch more of the smaller /Appearances pages that need to be corrected. Thanks again! --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:17, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Bot Edits

I'm seeing Peteparker's edits on my watch list, even when I click/unclick hide/show bot edits. It's possible everyone is experiencing this too. FYI. :) --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:17, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

I tested this when JamieBot was running rampant. First, I found that it does not clear out old edits and these will always show once on the watchlist. Second, I think there may be a problem, because it didn't show for a while and I thought it was good and then I think I logged out and back in at some point (cleared cache or other) and he was back. So might be a bug, might just be my browser and it's memory...not sure yet. --M1shawhan 17:53, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
I see PeteparkerBot's edits on my watchlist too, but only if 'he' edits a page I am watching.
Are you guys just watching 80% of the database? lol
I am working on a new 'bug tracker'... hold that thought for a few hours.
--Jamie 19:01, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

I just noticed that the bulleting in comic articles looks glitchy when using Firefox. When I switch the rendering engine to Internet Explorer, it looks fine again. Is this normal for firefox?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:17, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Sadly, I am not sure if this is a Firefox glitch, or whether Firefox is correct... and we have designed it so that is works properly on a buggy MS Internet Explorer... :(
Either way, I noticed it a while ago too... Just one of those things.
It will be fixed one day...
You should log it on our new bug tracker! (Coming in the next couple of days, watch for it!)
--Jamie 23:12, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Bots, Bots everywhere, let's all have a Bot.

I've had a couple of requests from people asking me to show them how to use a bot. What do you think of people having to come to you for the That way, you'd know before each bot was actually put to use, and you could also give a standard schpiel about with great bot power comes great bot responsibility. (Or something like that).
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:17, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

"with great bot power comes great bot responsibility" hahaha, awesome!
That sounds fine. :)
Your bot is doing so well, everyone wants one!
Doing a great job! Keep it up!
--Jamie 14:55, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Sweet! Check out my botxplaination page, to see if you have any tips/tricks to add. I think it's a little bit easier to understand than that main bot page. And thanks for the signature tip! No more outdated dates!
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:09, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Looks great!
Only thing I might suggest is some screenshots to splash in a bit of colour and visual aesthetics. :)
I am even surprised you updated the framework! Awesome!
I just used the old, default one... ;)
Nicely done.
--Jamie 19:49, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
How do we capture screenshots?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 22:02, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Lots of possible ways, but I like to hit 'print screen' or 'prt scn' which copies the screen. Then you open MS Paint or photoshop and paste it.
Save the image, upload it to the database and appropriately tag it as a database project image...
Let me know if you have any troubles. :)
--Jamie 04:45, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Wow! That's really cool! All these years of working with computers and never using the print screen key. Thanks!
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 14:51, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

DCDP seems to be down

Hey Jamie,

Hate to be a nag but... looks like the DCDP is down... or something.

By the way, I thought I read somewhere that you were getting married, or having a kid... or both. CONGRATS! --Brian Kurtz 17:19, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Don't feel like you are nagging!
It seems to be working again, but Wikia seems to be breaking 2 things for every 1 they fix. :(
I will keep hounding them, don't worry. :)
--Jamie 19:49, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Apparently Wikia as a whole was having problems... everything was going down.
They just bought $50k USD of new servers which they will be adding for us all in the next few days to hopefully speed things up a bit. :)
--Jamie 04:45, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

WWH Movie trailor

It was o.k. it just that the only reaon I wouldn't put it up there is because some people have slow computers so it takes forever to play the trailor but other than that it was an o.k. idea but I must thanks for helping me on the page I've been trying to get others to help me but no one has so again thanks. The Hulkster 23:16, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Certainly, my pleasure!
It did need some work! :)
--Jamie 04:30, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Congrats! Looks like he takes after Halley...whew! Just kidding..congratulations and I think I will drink tonight in you three's honor! (thanks for giving me a reason to drink...) LOL! Congrats again and keep us all up-to-date on the progress. --M1shawhan 23:25, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

You'll have to give me at least another 9 months to try again. ;)

New Image Template

I have coded one image (Image:Cable_Vol_1_62.jpg) using the new template. Everything seems fine to me. I assume that red links to collections of images (such as Jose Ladronn covers) will be completed by someone more knowledgeable than me... :)

I haven't found any bugs, but I don't think I am putting the template through enough work to find any yet. Let me know if I am on the right track, though.

...dying to have the forum back... Artful Dodger 03:22, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Yup, looks good to me!
Only thing I might change is Cable should be Cable (Earth-616), etc.
That way we know exactly which version of which character it is.
Let me know as soon as you find a bug. (I don't doubt there is at least 1!)
Yes, all the red linked categories will eventually be filled in. Don't worry about those so much...
I, too, miss the forums. Soon, I promise!
--Jamie 04:57, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Where did you want me to change Cable to Cable (Earth-616)? In the See Also section? The proper link is there in the code as well as in the description for both him and Nick Fury. Should the See Also section show the text "Cable (Earth-616)"?
Artful Dodger 11:12, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Subject1 should be "Nathan Summers (Earth-616)" and Subject2 should be "Nicholas Fury (Earth-616)" to exactly match the names of their respective articles.
--Jamie 01:20, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Done and done.

--Jamie 03:38, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

You're up late!

Must be Jr's feeding time and your turn. I'd be willing to copy/paste the changes I make on one to the other, if you feel comfortable with that, if not, I don't mind dropping a line to a DC admin to let them know a change has been made. I'm sure you've probably seen all the various ideas I have for the character template, but since they're not minor, I'm waiting for feedback to implement them. The Character Template is so WIDELY used, I had a hard time even diving in there on that little gender change. Did you already tell a DC admin? I thought I read that you already updated the template over there.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 08:26, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it was my shift to feed / watch. I was only up until 5:30 am or so. ;)
I made the change myself as I really had nothing else important to do while junior was sleeping soundly...
I noticed you left a note and messaged Brian. That is perfect. ;)
The Gender field is a great way to get your feet wet with major template alterations for sure! You did a great job!
--Jamie 20:37, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Have you seen my other ideas? The code for them is here. I thought a compromise might be swell for the disambig box situation, but understand if you don't like the idea of not using Aliases anymore. Check out the Power Box. I'm terrible at the visual asthetics stuff, so I left it the same color/setup as the disambig box. I also set up some code (inside <!--'s) for Height and Weight once we get the new StringFunctions. Let me know what you think if you get a breather and get tired of watching your baby sleep. (I hear that never ever gets old).
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 05:41, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

The Forums?

Any word on the Forums being down? Is it just me?
-Artful Dodger 02:04, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Yup, they are down. :(
I was hoping to have them back up and running by now, but it looks like I won't until tomorrow perhaps.
Technical issues... but it is just the excuse I need to mull over the idea of moving the forums to a whole new server.
If that is what I decide, it should eliminate such outages and increase performace.
We will see how it goes, but they are important, so I will have them back asap.
--Jamie 02:14, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Holy Moly!

You are hitting those old disambig pages pretty hard! The Height/Weight fields are ready, and you can test them using this test page or your own test page with this template. (I emailed you too). Let me know if you find any bugs. --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 06:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah and I am almost done those blasted disambigs, too!
Anywho, I looked and your code for height/weight and just went cross-eyed!
At first glance, it looks fine. :)
Question: Is it better to have 1 category for each weight? (Category:114 lbs (52 kg) Characters) or would it be better to have them all in one category, ascending? ( 114 lbs (52 kg) Characters)
What do you think?
--Jamie 15:43, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Man! That's the hardest thing about this template code, there's no unilateral format that makes it easy to see. It makes looking at it give you a feeling like vertigo or brain freeze! Do you have an example of this kind of category? I'm having trouble understanding how it works. How are they sorted by weight? I set up the in that the weights would be put into, but you're saying that the weights would already be in there, and wouldn't' need subcategories? I don't really care for having 1000 subcategories for all the different weights either.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 15:59, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
It just so happens I have an example.
Notice how all the sub-categories appear beside each other at the top of the first page?
The way that is accomplished is in the way you tag the subcategory, like so:
Blind Characters instead of Blind Characters
Subtle, eh?
In the case of height and weight, we would need leading zeros so that 120 lbs isn't listed ahead of 13 lbs. :)
I am not sure, but I'd imagine it would be something more like:
00013 lbs (6 kg) and 00120 lbs (5? kg)
Yes, no, maybe?
--Jamie 16:10, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Ok, that's very possible. I have to figure out the leading zeros code, but it shouldn't be too hard. I implemented the change without the leading zeros code, and put two test pages into it. It looks like the pages are only sorted according to the first number of the weight. IE 115lbs and 118lbs are both in subcategory 1. Any way we can fix that part of it? (I think this is because I had the bar up against the number at first) Is the bar supposed to be up against Weight, or up against the number? And what do we put as the link in the info box? Just a general link to Category:Weight?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail)
It is very subtle and a bit tricky, I am still not 100% with it:
Blind Characters instead of Blind Characters
The space goes after the pipe |
This will change them from being sorted in '1' or 'B', and instead sort them by ' ' (a blank space)
If we add enough fairy dust to the auto-magic, the link we would have in the infobox would take us directly to that height.
Let's not worry about the link yet, until we know the code itself works well.
--Jamie 16:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Sweet! I see what you're talking about, and it works well. Two little things beyond the link, (which only takes you to the weight category right now):
First, at the bottom of the page, where eye color and such is displayed, "Weight" is displayed instead of the formatted weight, and with the sub categorization in there, I can't seem to make the formatted weight appear instead.
Second, there's no divisors for the large amount of characters that would be listed in Category:Weight, so it might be tedious even trying to get to the page that displays the ones with the weight you're looking for, especially if you're looking for the higher ones.
I'm very new to the category scene, so if you know it'll work, I can just trust ya. : ) The only real reason I was having weights/heights be their own subcategories is because eye color, hair color, and skin color are all set up the same way.
- The preceding unsigned comment was added by Peteparker (talk • contribs).

No worries, I think CategoryTOC ought to do the trick. :)
--Jamie 18:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

I threw in some word searches for existing physical feature Categories in the UnusualFeatures field. For example if wing exists, they go into Category:Wings, fur to Fur, heads to multiple heads, etc. Can we use it?

I have a feeling your feelings are negative about the "Power Box" at the bottom of the template, so I'll stop asking about that one, but can we use some other differences that I have in my test template?

Someone asked for a quote at the top of the history, so I made one if you want to use it. They'd be two optional fields, | Quote = and | Speaker =, since I didn't want to re-write the existing quote template.

--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 19:32, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Ooo! I didn't even think about word searches for Wing and Fur! I like it!
That could be a very widely used implementation. :)
As for the power box, I actually do like the concept, but the aesthetic might need to be tweaked before we implement.
The top quote is doable, too. :)
Oh man! So much to do! All in good time, dear friend...
--Jamie 19:43, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Yay! You can tell I'm chomping at the bit! I made two auto-cat-magic things just now for the categories in Category:Characters by Origin and Category:Characters by Occupation, they look for the key words that would signify those categories, and auto-categorizes them! (Very similar to Wing and fur, but with Mutant and Alien and doctor and lawyer).
Can I move these cool new items over, or would you like to have some more testing? I'm only talking about Height, Weight, UnusualSkinColor, Quote/Speaker, and the UnusualFeatures, and Origin and Occupation keyword categorization helpers.
And if I remember right, you don't want RealName and Title to be a link if it exists because it could possibly only be a redirect back to the page, right?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 20:03, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
You can move over UnusualSkinColor, Origin, Occupation, and Quote/Speaker if you are confident.
Once you have implemented the changes, bounce around and check a few major pages, like Wolverine, etc to make sure nothing unexpected happened. :) (Happens to me all the time!)
Let's wait on Height / Weight for now, I still want to figure out how Category:Height will work first...
--Jamie 20:44, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

It's such a pleasure to work on things that will make a large difference around here without having to examine thousands of pages! I'm very happy to help. You can't do it ALL you know, (just 99% of things). Let me know if you nail down how you want Height and Weight to work, not to mention Powers. I'm getting pretty good with nesting functions, so I really do believe there's nothing we can't do here anymore. I'm thinking about sprinkling some automagic on the affiliations next, but we'll see how hard that turns out to be. : ) Thanks for all your help! It's so much easier to move forward on things when I can get feedback! --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:13, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Also, I checked through about 1000 Occupation fields and any Occupations that I saw with more than five pages referencing them, I made auto-categorize. From Ninja to Teacher. : )
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:18, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Documentation is updated, should there an announcement, or forum listing? I'll notify the DC Database guys about the changes.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:26, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
What I need to figure out with Height / Weight is how to get HeightTOC to work as expected, on :Category:Height. Think you could have a crack at it?
Hahaha, good luck with that affliations thing... We already have over 600 teams listed, that might not be easy to accomplish in the same way we have Wings and Fur.
We might have to come up with a more genius plan to handle that many options. :)
Yeah, let the DCDP admins know once the code is implemented and seems to be working.
Normally, I would say to post it on the forums, yes. (Once they are back up.)
--Jamie 23:49, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

I realized

Over the weekend that we can use the same keyword search trick to auto-categorize any of the fields with varying inputs. Powers and Abilities could work similarly to Origin and Occupation, and Strength could work either the same as these other two or the same way as Height and Weight once we decide how to do those. If we get really crazy with it, we could use the same thing for Equipment, Transportation, and Weapons, but I'm not sure how often those three are filled in with any valuable data. --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:10, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

That sounds good, too! I don't often see too much data in Equip/Transport/Weapons either...
Let's leave those 3 fields alone for now.
--Jamie 01:20, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering. . .

when that was going to happen. I saw it, but wasn't sure if it needed to be addressed. Silly Americans, thinking the world revolves around us. : ) --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 03:04, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Done and done! It is now UnusualSkinColour and UnusualSkinColour2.
PS, I'm getting a lot of edit conflicts these days, about 50% of all my edits. Wikia working on it?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 03:11, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Don't forget to update the documentation for UnusualSkinColour too!
(I already did it for you)
As for edit conflicts, yes, Wikia is getting on it, but I didn't realize it was happening to us, too.
I am beginning to believe it is a user related issue because it happens to some users and not others.
(I don't get this problem at all...)
I will bug Wikia again. :)
(You should subscribe to the Wikia mailing list, it has lots of yummy MDP related info for admins.)

Forum Help

Yo man I think I've finally worked out how to use this page properly lol I haven't been able to access the forum for a few days? the page isn't loading, its not the first time this has happened, is there a problem with the forums or do u think the problems my end? Thanks! --Wild Goose 17:10, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Forums are down, I will make an announcement.
I have been holding off because I keep thinking I will be able to get them back up and running.
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Ok thanks for letting me know :-) --Wild Goose 20:05, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Woo Hoo!

StringFunctions are AMAZING! I'm glad we got them. I'm excited to see your ideas, since the template is becoming more and more complicated. I was thinking that we could section-out each piece of the template itself to smaller templates, so that we only have to work on one aspect or field at a time, but I wasn't sure if one, it would work, or two, if it was worth all the effort! Can you tell that I'm trying to guess what your idea is? : )

You bugger! That was part of it! We need to abstract the logic into separate templates and 'call' those templates from the Character Template. That will leave the Character Template nice and clean. :)
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm also trying to help out with the Character Template on the Dutch side of MDP, but as usual, I am having trouble with the </div> placements. It's difficult enough to figure out how many you actually need, but where exactly they go without showing up in the page is TOUGH! The bulk of my Template-idea implementation is dealing with these little buggers. I know they close out specific text formatting, but that's the extent of my knowledge about them. Do you have any tips/tricks?

No tricks yet, but I have even more ideas about how to clean up the templates, especially for the purpose of language translation. Can you guess what I plan to for that?
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

No guesses here. I'm barely starting to branch out to the other languages, so I don't have much experience in the differences between their pages and ours. I can tell your idea is going to be BIG though!
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 20:51, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

I also took a look at the HeightToc Template. First, it took forever to see what it was even doing since I had my Toc's turned of. Haha. I got the template to work, but it will only jump to where the stated footage starts. It won't cut off the ones that are greater than a certain amount. Look at View and Render here. It basically says that you can view all pages in a category up to a point or beyond a point, but not between two points. But if you wanted to show everything starting at and beyond a certain footage, it's done. We could be ready to roll!

Yes, that is what I was expecting.
CategoryTOC does the same thing.
If it is ready... Let's roll it out!
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Two drawbacks to the height and weight use:
One, the link in the info box only goes to the height/weight category page, not necessarily to the character-specific page of the height/weight category. (This one's not valid, I fixed it, if we don't mind them being url links. Was there a special trick for them not showing up in the toc's?)
Two, the words "Height" and "Weight" are displayed at the bottom of the page instead of the respective values.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 20:51, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem with your syntax is that when we put a space after the bar in categorization, it treats that space as the first thing it is alphabetizing. And normally, we'd put underscore characters in for spaces in the navigation bar, but it was treating it as an underscore instead of a space. I supplemented '%20' for the underscores, and it works as you were intending, (I think). --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:55, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I knew that, but I tried using a ' ', but I didn't think to use '%20'. :)
Great work!
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
I set up the WeightTOC also, did you want kg on those as well? We're definately going to have to add leading zeros or spaces for those.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 18:03, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
I dunno, what do you think?
I think kg would be appropriate, but if it unnecessarily complicates things...
We could just make the 'kg' part purely superficial, having it be dynamically calculated and displayed, but not actually part of the category.
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
I looked at it, and it gets VERY long with all the kg's next to the lbs. Maybe you can make it look prettier?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 20:51, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
I fixed up the weight Categorization to include the leading zeros. I believe it's ready for use or further testing, depending on what you want to do. I only put leading zeros up to 1000 lbs. Do we have many tens-thousand pound people? And do I need to modify it to handle tons as well?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 18:43, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
If we don't make it handle 10000 lbs now, how easy will it be to modify later?
If it is easy, then leave it for now. :)
--Jamie 19:46, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Fairly easy, especially with the upcoming modularization idea.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 20:51, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Automatic 'Next Issue'

I noticed something I think is new. I am adding issues to titles such as Deadpool and when I get to the last issue, the template seems to automatically add the next issue for me. This is cool, but it adds issues past the actual run of the title. What should I do to make it accurate?
Artful Dodger 01:20, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

I believe you could just add | Next = - so that the hyphen prevents the 'automagic' linking.
Of course, the hyphen would need to be removed when the next issue is actually released. :)
--Jamie 01:57, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
I tried that, but it doesn't work. Check out Deadpool_Vol_2_4 to see what I mean.
Artful Dodger 01:09, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Looks like a logic bug in the template... I believe I have fixed that now. It isn't perfect, but it'll do. :)
--Jamie 05:50, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Double Redirects

How do we update the double redirects? There's a bot program that automatically fixes them, and I have a feeling there have been a lot generated since the 10th. (The last time it was updated). --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:05, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

I think it is cached, possibly for 7 days or something.
I'd just give it time...
Alternatively, it might be part of the 'job queue', I am not sure.
--Jamie 22:01, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for deleting that, I was right about to! PeteParkerBot can now update M1shawhan and Squirrelloid's naming lists. Woo hoo! --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 23:22, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

No problemo! :)
--Jamie 23:34, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Item and distinguish

Jamie, the distinguish line doesn't seem to be working on the item template. Add it if you have to or let me know if I have it wrong on the war machine armor profiles. koku 17:48, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Should it be added to other applicable templates, ie team and item?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 19:38, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
You are more than welcome to add it to any/every template as you see fit. :)
Item and team are probably a good place to start...
--Jamie 21:05, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Added to both item and team. I'll keep it in mind for the future. How about that minor character template button for the edit screen? : )
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail)
I definitely need to add that, but FIRST I want to revise that whole template. :)
It needs a bit of tweaking I think.
--Jamie 02:03, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

I couldn't figure out why I wouldn't have made the logo transparent until I opened it. The best I was able to do was radiate the red edges from the Marvel logo out a bit more. This will blend in nicely with other themes. BladeBronson 18:45, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

I wish I had half the artistic skill you have in your pinky finger. :)
I think I owe you a FEW beer now!
(You just might have to fly me to California to collect on them, though...)
--Jamie 19:12, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Is this alliterating to a new logo for the site? Am I using 'alliterating' correctly?
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 23:11, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
You mean alluding. ;)
Alliterations are when you do "Andy Always Ate Apples".
No 'new' logo, just a new hack on the one you see, so it works better if you change skins....
--Jamie 23:22, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeesh. . .

Sorry about that. I'm not even aware of doing it. Is it possible that we're editing the same pages at the same time? I'll be more careful in the future. Oh, and I finished the Move Category today, at least temporarily. Thanks to the Bots! --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 23:09, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Nope, you edited hours later, I think.
I think you hit the wrong 'edit' button...
I get confused too, cuz they are all over the place!
Just make sure the URL doesn't say &oldid=12345 or whatever when you are editing.
That means you are editing an OLD version of the page. :(
--Jamie 23:22, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Searching Categories

Hi Jamie. Sorry to bother you, but the forums are down. Is it possible to do a boolean search using Categories (ex. "Show me all files that are both "Category:Male Characters" AND "Category:Earth-1234"")? Oh, and on a personal note, can you recommend any decent Mac wiki software for personal use (i.e. not putting files on a webserver, but have it generally look and work like the MDP/DCDP)? Thanks,

--Roygbiv666 13:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, you can do those types of 'THIS and THAT', or 'THIS or THAT' category listings...
As far as I know, the only way to do it is with DynamicPageLife extension.
See these as examples and let me know if you want a specific example. :)
As for Desktop Wiki, I searched for Desktop+Wiki, but I can't say as I know which of those may be best as I have only ever used MediaWiki.
One suggestion, go open source and make sure the software is ~2 years old and still being actively developed.
Let me know if you find a good one!
--Jamie 22:47, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the welcome. :) There's probably some page explaining this, but could you tell me why the pages have the characters real names as opposed to their common names? It seems strange to refer to Hulking as "Dorrek VIII" when everyone knows him as Hulking. Paul730 00:20, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

It's all part of the naming conventions. Basically, there could be a few people with one costumed identity (like say Captain America), so it was done to avoid confusion. The plan is to standardize names and then create the appropriate disambiguation pages.
--Roygbiv666 00:28, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Very good question!
The reason why we do that is two-fold:
This style of naming is much less likely to change
These names are much more unique and allow us to use these names as variables in our comics templates.
If we said that 'Baron Zemo' was in a comic, is that Heinrich Zemo, or Helmut Zemo, and Earth-616 or Earth-2149?
We use their real name, in conjunction with their home universe to precisely distinguish them from similar characters.
It was a difficult decision, but it was the only way to make all the behind-the-scenes magic work...
--Jamie 00:43, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
(Roygbiv666 is right... and more concise. ;)
--Jamie 00:43, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for explaining that. :) Paul730 14:05, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorting Appearances Categories

Hey Jamie,

PirahanaSister brought up a good point about the character appearances categories, if we wanted to auto-magically put them in chronological order, we could use the same idea as for the height and weight categories. If we have a character in the cast field, they are categorized as:

Throw in some if statements for the absence of year or month, and boom, automagik chronological list! Any thoughts? --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 19:25, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Sounds good, but if I am not mistaken, publication date is only about 95% accurate when it comes to 'chronology'.
Perhaps these folks might know best...
--Jamie 01:57, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, this was essentially the reason for the 2 categories I thought. One sorted a "publication order" off of the comic name. The chronological was the Marvel Universe appearances for individuals over the course of their lives. Ex) Professor X's first comic appearance might be X-Men #1, while his chronological first appearance was whichever comic shows his birth and so forth...
Now if we could have an "adjustable" automagic'd category...we could rule wiki-world! --M1shawhan 23:32, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Distinguish/Disambig Automation

Let's say we have 10 files about versions of "Longunderwearman". We put in the Longunderwearman code. We have a disambiguation page call "Longunderwearman" with a list of all the other files of similar name.

Is there a way to autmate that? So, you put the Longunderwearman code in, and, automagically he shows up in the Disambig page with:

  • the Image used in the main file
  • the whole "A, CA, G, Q" deal
  • the Universe designation
  • etc.

So, all users have to do is create the entry for "Longunderwearman (Earth-666)" with a Longunderwearman code, and, voila - instantly populated information to the Disambig page.

The final proof is left to the reader...

--Roygbiv666 15:52, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
I suppose something similar might be possible, yes.
The only problem is, it wouldn't be A CA G Q, or even in gallery format, I don't think.
This is brilliant, to be honest.
It would be EXTREMELY nice to have... I have added it to my mental todos. ;)
--Jamie 05:50, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
If possible, this is a SWEET idea! It also would take away a TON of work for editors as well. We could also make it tag the disambig image with the one currently in the article's image spot. Got me thinkin' now! --M1shawhan 15:58, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
By all means, if you have any ideas about this, I am open to suggestions!
--Jamie 05:50, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Just as a thought - would it be possible to have a forced page generation? For instance...we say "If Distinguish1 EXISTS" AND "= article" DOES NOT exist, then "ADDPAGE" "= article"? This way if the page does not exist then it is, created??? Can we force code to CREATE active pages? If possible, then I would think that this type of logic would be all that was needed. Does my thought even make is late... --M1shawhan 05:01, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Can't be done.
BUT what CAN be done is to have an automagic link, which when CLICKED can help the user create the article.
I have implemented some similar logic on welcome, more specifically on userbar.
If I tag their user talk page and they don't have a user page, the link says 'create your user page' instead of 'go to your user page'.
Know what I mean? (example)
--Jamie 05:08, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes...I think this one would work and would be a good item to investigate further. --M1shawhan 05:20, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Holy crap.
Turns out you can now (for 1 year, but I didn't know) REMOVE the text field and have JUST a create button!
I actually WROTE A PATCH to an extension to add this functionality, but never got around to installing it.
Turns out Wikipedia beat me to the punch and the Marvel Database already has the feature!
Seriously, this will chew up my entire weekend. :(
So much for sleeping in. ;)

MDP Background Image

Is there a way to change that default background Wiki image (the grey one that looks like, I dunno, a sheet behind all the good stuff)? Is so, maybe we could have it be Marvel-themed, like Spider-Man's webbing or something.

--Roygbiv666 01:44, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I think so. It is funny you should ask, someone brought it up last night on irc (#wikia). :)
If you mean in monobook skin, I assume it would be done in somewhere...
Most people (not logged-in users) don't see Monobook skin any longer anyways. Do you still use Monobook?
(The image is an open book, I think... The same one Wikipedia uses.)
--Jamie 02:08, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

I've got the old/default skin, if that's what you mean. Good point. D'oh. Still looks like a sheet with a weight in the middle to me.

--Roygbiv666 02:25, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Don't worry, someone had to tell me what it was, too. ;)
I think Wikipedia needs a skin upgrade...
Not very '2008' or 'Web 2.0', if you ask me!
--Jamie 02:30, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I've been gone awhile but decided to revisit the site. I'm glad I did because things are looking most impressive around here. I like whats been done to the Marvel & DC Databases- everything's all neat, detailed, and organized. This is excellent work! Keep it going! - The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kmecha7 (talk • contribs).

I still use Monobook because I like the edit box to be in the middle, and not off to the left. : )

Height and Weight stats

It might be a good idea to watch Ankur29. Those height and weight listings aren't from any handbook. I think he/she is looking at recent depictions of how the character's are drawn and is estimating their size based on personal perception. For instance, he/she listed the Thing at 7'0" and 1,000 lbs and based this upon how he's sometimes depicted as towering over Reed Richards.Jack Hammer 01:18, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks... that's good to know.
Feel free to leave a (nice) message for them, letting them know why we want 'factual' information only. :)

Reply from jj137

Well, yes. What I should have clarified is that is there a special page to add this? Angela told me only wikia staff can give users bot status, but I'm not sure about checkusers. Thanks   jj137 (talk) 23:38, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, there is a special page I believe. If you have 'staff' group membership, you will see it, otherwise it is invisible.
The same is true for checkuser status...

X-Men: Millennial Visions 2000

Hey Jamie,
I'm working on putting in all the alternate reality stuff from these books, but it doesn't look like all the writers/inkers/colourists are showing up. Basically, each person did one story, so they're all separate stories. Am I using the template wrong? --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 15:40, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Looks like if Synopsis2 isnt defined, then none of the Writer2_1 stuff will work...
Not sure if that is a bug, per se.
I don't think we should really have Writer2_1, Writer3_1.
I think it should instead be Writer1_2, Writer1_3.
--Jamie 17:01, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Yea, there are 24 stories in one book in those things. OH BOY. (Not to mention multiple characters for each story, UGH).
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 06:05, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Have a recommendation on how to best handle that?
(Forums should be up in by the weekend... maybe ask there?)

Thanks for the warm welcome. You probably won't see me around much - I just popped in to see if you used the shared user database really, but I might be back *if* the RC feed ever gets fixed and I spot any vandalism.

Bot Probs

Could you try "python double" on JamieBot? PeteparkerBot is saying all the redirect pages don't exist, and I want to see if it's my software or not.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 07:41, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Mine says the same. :(
--Jamie 02:10, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Bummer! That was such a helpful feature! I tried asking on that bot forum thing a couple times, but got no reply. I also tried reverting the to an older version, but it doesn't look like it's making any difference. Time for a bug log!

Katherine Pryde

Is there any way we can fix this picture problem? --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 16:54, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Some image-size-adjustment code in the Minor Character template may help. The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 18:30, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Agreed, code in the minor character template is the most ideal fix.
Ideally, we (I) need to rewrite most of that template sometime...
--Jamie 21:12, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Triply agreed on this one...I will try to help on some suggestions once I mull over a couple other items. Let me know if you need any help on this if you guys get to it in the meantime. --M1shawhan 00:35, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Added the | ImageSize = field, hopefully, this'll take a bite out of it.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 04:44, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm more than willing to write the code, if we can agree on what it would ideally be. . . which might be impossible.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 05:35, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it might be tough, but any progress you make would be appreciated.
I will get to it eventually...
--Jamie 23:41, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

I really have no idea how I did that. I've been trying to be more careful about that too! All I do is double click and then scroll down to the the bottom and add my text. I don't know how or why that's happening. . .

OOOOOOOH! I know what's going on, I check the recent changes page, and follow all the talk pages to see what's shakin round here. And that pulls up an old version first, which I don't notice. SOSOSOSOSO sorry. Now that I know what I'm doing, I can not do it in the future. Sorry again!

--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 05:21, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

No problemo! ;)

Gallery template

I have created a new version of the Gallery template here and a test page here. Thought you might be interested of how it works. But there are issues if the "GalleryName" field includes double square brackets [[]]. The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 20:27, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

The issues are fixed (in my own way) and I can't find any problems with (unless the gallery is placed somewhere it shouldn't be). I have made a list over functions here. Have a look at it sometime. The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 18:10, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey there!
First, I just wanted to say how much I like the skin work you have done!
I wish I had (any) artistic skill. ;)
I wanted to let you know that I am working on a plan to bring the Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse wikis closer together, since they obviously share a lot of the same visitors.
I plan to create links between the databases and add Image/Dark Horse Comics to the forums we already have established.
Would you be interested in working on this plan with me?
Let me know if you are on board!
--Jamie 20:46, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
That sounds good to me, I have already been redirecting all related links to the Marvel and DC Databases. Let me know what kind of help I can be. --Thai420Talk to me! 06:29, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I will most definitely need your help...
Once things are ready (the new domain names and such) I will message you again so we can get the sites integrated. :)
Hopefully shouldn't be too long from now.

World War Hulk

On the Hulk's main page and the WWH part of the page is there any good pictures we could put on there? I was thinking we could put the pictures of the 5 WWH issues but the variant covers. I would do this myself but I can't do pictures. Tell me what you think of my idea.--The Hulkster 23:39, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Sounds like a great idea!
I am not too good with pics either, maybe Copycat989 might be a better person to ask. :)
--Jamie 13:43, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi - any thoughts on this? Not sure if it's possible or not.

--Roygbiv666 21:52, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Looks like some good discussion is progressing...
| Power1 = Template:Telepathy
| Power2 = Template:Strength
| Ability1 = Template:Detective
I hope to have some time to look into this more in the coming week or so... been quite busy (in the 'real world') lately...
--Jamie 23:46, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I looked at it a little more and my suggestion was stupid. The Character Template wouldn't need to change, we could just list a bunch: Template:Telepathy; Superstrength; Detective or something - the template could do the formattig and categorization.
Oh, and I guess we (MDP and DCDP) should maybe discuss the categorization of powers and try to keep them consistent. For some reason.
--Roygbiv666 16:01, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Consistency is our friend. ;)
It isn't a bad suggestion, we just have different ways of doing things. We need to make sure we find the best way, so we don't have to revisit it again later...

question about use of messages

Hi- I am a sysop at genealogy doing template and bot work on the site. I saw your unusual use of Mediawiki namespace at MediaWiki:AddCharacterMessage. Can you point me to what uses this particular message? Long ago, I skimmed the System Messages portion of the mediawiki help on meta, but I remember being puzzled by what alternate uses that people were making of it. Why put this template in the Mediawiki namespace? ~ Phlox 19:49, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

I have to admin there is no particular reason I put that in there, but I figure, all 'messages' should stay in one place. I probably saw someone else do it.
We use it here, when you create a new character. (with the &editintro= paramater)

So Many Dead Images

Quick question...Why do we have so many images in the "Image Needed" section which have been removed because they were a part of Shouldn't those all be deleted along with their links?

Artful Dodger 04:09, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
I was sort of hoping to replace them (re-upload new versions), rather than delete them altogether.
If this can't / won't be done... feel free to tag them for permanent deletion.
It is just one of those millions of things on my todo list, so far down it likely will never be addressed by me, personally.
--Jamie 05:42, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
If its okay with you, I think I will go ahead and tag them for deletion. It looks like we have plenty of good images already. The Polaris page has 66 images and 5 of these blank ones. Also, since their descriptions are so vague (Polaris standing, Polaris jumping) I don't know how people could accurately replace them.
I'll go ahead and take care of tagging them since the things at the top of your to do list are more important. I really enjoy working on this site.
Artful Dodger 10:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good to me.
Looks like those images have been nuked today. :)
I agree, it is a lot of fun to work on this site.
I created it as much for uber-comic-fans to edit, as I did for comic-fans to read. ;)
It keeps us off the streets and from causing trouble elsewheres... hahaha
Glad you are enjoying it!

Facebook race

What is Facebook exactly? I don't quite want to join something I don't know anything about. The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 15:38, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Facebook is a social networking site where you connect with current and long-lost friends.
It has becoming really popular lately, I am surprised you haven't heard of it. I think it is the 6th biggest site in the world.
Don't join if you don't feel up to it, the race is partly to spread the word about our projects to folks who haven't heard of us yet.
You'd be surprised how many long-lost friends you'll find on Facebook... (At least in Canada, that is true).
I think I read a report that over 20% of ALL Canadians are now using Facebook.
Anywho... I am babbling. Later!

Strength Scale

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it overall. Once it's all finished, I'll probably go back over it and delete some of the characters because some of them are pure speculative since I haven't been able to find any listing for them. Also, I was wondering if you might consider speaking to another editor that's been on there recently. He or she is going through and making some changes that, I think, reflect their own personal opinion of how strong they believe the character is or should be rather than what Marvel categorizes them. I know that a character's physical strength can vary from issue to issue, but just throwing in whatever number sounds reasonable to you undermines the whole thing. In some situations, the editor keeps adding stats to some characters that are outdated. A good example is for Wolverine. In the first OHOTMU he was stated as lifting 500 lbs but that stat was changed both in later handbooks and he's been portrayed as demonstrating signifigantly greater strength that that in regular monthly titles. I've left a message on his/her discussion page and it hasn't seemed to have had any impact, being that I just reverted several edits he's done to the page. I've used some older OHOTMU stats in a lot of the profiles because, even though some of them have had more recent write ups, nothing about their powers or their physical strength has changed. They've been involved in more recent storylines, but they have the same physical abilities. Ikaris is a good example of that. He was featured in one of the A-Z Update articles published earlier this year. He has the same abilities but the issue didn't state how much weight he can lift, so that's why I used the older Masters Edition. Anyhow, thanks for the praise and happy new year.Jack Hammer 00:14, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I agree we should use the most recent citable source.
Be it a monthly issue, or a handbook.
I think ALL characters on that list should have an associated reference; if not, feel free to pull them off the list.
If you have a newer citation than the other person, change it and update the reference.
If they change it back, send me the specific link to their edit and I will 'chat' with them about it. :)
Again... amazing work! Much appreciated! That list has been a very popular page... and I believe it will be even moreso now that it is a very credible resource!

Outdated Spoiler

Comics:Excalibur_Vol_1_1 has a spoiler warning on it. It's been 20 years; I think we know what's going to happen :) Seriously, though, I have looked at the code and cannot find how to remove that spoiler template. Suggestions?
Artful Dodger 04:08, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I isolated the issue causing the error and I couldn't quite work out the code on that single line. Looks like it just happened since the date change to 2008. I tagged it on the "comic template" as an admin <!-- edit. Hope you can figure it out. I assume it is a number that is off somewhere, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. --M1shawhan 06:06, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Template Insanity

Hi Jamie,

I was attempting at making a template that could handle the majority of the ways people input Comic article names, and after making some decent headway, I began to wonder how complicated these templates can get. Obviously, if you're writing them correctly, you could have thousands of lines of code doing if statements and such. Does this kind of thing bog down page load time? This might be similar to the DPL thing you were talking about, (we're getting our own DPL because the old DPL code runs dog-slow). I'm putting the breaks on my project, but thought you might want to see the complexity I'm talking about here. If it does or is a problem, let me know, and I can either scale it back a little or a lot, or I can remove it if necessary. I have drawings of the tree process the code goes through, so it would be easier for me to scale it back if we need to.

Thanks again, --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 00:27, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes, complexity does slow the servers, and hence page loads. :(
Oddly enough, before I even read your above message, I made this template. :)
Funny how that happens...
I even think my template is too complex. I was thinking about removing the {} part.
Basically all it does it adds around whatever you put into the template.
Quite simple and not much of a performance impact.
Do you think it would meet your needs? (Or can mine even be simplified?)
--Jamie 04:12, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Yea, I had more simple scripts involved before, so doing that and then attempting to fix others with a bot or something would probably be best. I just hate to see those First and Last appearance blocks not being links, especially when the comic actually exists. I suppose once all of the comic pages are moved to the appropriate names, it'll all be better anyway. I'll pull the Cnst Template out of the templates, and start fixing the comic names as I run into them. Happy New Year!
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 04:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Speaking of templates

While on the topic...I tried to tinker with the character template code to make an "easy" way to change the infobox background color for Good/Bad/Neutral characters based on their |Alignment = . Then I started thinking we meant to do this back in the day or at least brought up the possibility. Either way, I found a possible "Bad" - Red color "FFC1C1".

I had worked it all out, but finally couldn't get it right without recreating a full infobox code for bad and good and then using an "if good use this infobox code and if bad use THIS infobox code." Turned out to be a HUGE page, but worked. Thought maybe you could tinker and see if it could be changed easily and more efficiently. Then maybe we could even color-code the location/team and other template infoboxes. The blue is becoming monotonous. Let me know what you think. --M1shawhan 05:06, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Definitely doable.
How? Good question. :)
I agree the blue is becoming monotonous, but for now this is a medium priority.
(I have to prioritize these days since I don't have as much free time as I used to...)
I think we are almost done a NEWLY tweaked skin anyways.
That ought to provide some eye-candy to tide us over for a bit anyways. :)
(Plus it is a bit more intuitive, since I hear a lot of people have reverted back to the "Wikipedia" skin... :(
--Jamie 15:09, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
All done! But you guys should pick colors for neutral and when Alignment isn't filled in, if we're keeping the blue for good. I like the color of Bad, but it doesn't mesh all that amazingly with the darker-Blue links. For good measure, I put the same code in the distinguish block.
You can play with it here. : )
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 16:15, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Dang it...I always forget about the #switch. I like it, but yes, I think we should agree on the color. This skin better be worth it Jamie. ;) I actually am pretty sure I will stick around even if I didn't like it though. ;) --M1shawhan 00:28, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
I think I'll kick around for a bit, too. ;)
Let's not focus on the looks for now, changes are coming as I say...
I have heard complaints lately about our site becoming 'too complicated' to edit.
We are accomplishing amazing feats of data collection and organization, but we should try to keep the ability for newbies to help us...
If we exclude them by complexity of learning, that doesn't help us in the long run.
Not only is our skin being upgraded, we are moving from MediaWiki 1.10 to 1.12 soon. It has a few bugfixes and a few new features... Not too sure about all the details yet, though.
Lots of fun!
--Jamie 03:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
1.12?!? Now THAT'S exciting. I personally can't wait to see what cool additions they throw in.
As for complicated. . . Aren't the templates we're adding making it EASIER to add information? Should we be working on making the templates even easier to understand? The Disambig Template, for instance, would be cool if all you had to add was the image and the article name if you wanted to add one. Was there a specific piece/part that was looking too complex? What can we work on? :)
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
No worries, there are plans in the works to simplify it further. Might be a few months out though. :)

Just to throw a couple things in here for your information,

  1. I'm about 90% done with a character templating bot, so that should ease some editing burdens. All that's left is the bazillions of categories that are possibly included in a page. Right now, it leaves them at the bottom, but I'd ideally like any category that can be auto-categorized by the template to actually be in the template instead of at the bottom. The most obvious of these, (Male, Female, Living, Deceased, etc) are already taken care of, but ones like Vampires and Teachers are still to be coded. This bot would also be the basis for other kinds of templating, should we come upon large amounts of untemplated pages of a specific variety (ie the COMICS).
  2. I'd like to help to add the buttons for inserting different templates above the edit box. I know we've chatted a bit about doing this a couple of times, and maybe you're waiting for the new MediaWiki to kick in, but I could sure use a Minor Character, Race, and Reality Template up there. :)

That's all for now, (Not sure why I felt the need to number two things. . . ) --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree with both. Definitely need the Minor and Reality template. The race would be few and far between, but I think the more "easy" buttons we have the better. I second the motion for having as little as possible outside the template. That way, all you need IS the template. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help as well. --M1shawhan 01:57, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
I can make the button icons this week sometime.
The code is found on MediaWiki:Common.js I think...
They are pretty easy to make. Are all of those templates finalized?
The code for the buttons isn't dynamic, so when the template changes, you need to update the buttons manually...
--Jamie 06:10, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
As far as minor being finalized, I'm still not a fan of the template in general, but if we're continuing down that path, I think the standard given syntax is good. I know it's good for the reality template.
There's word on the street that the Event template is getting sorted out, and I just stumbled upon the Marvel Staff template today. I think all that are left are the item and vehicle templates, which SOMEONE said they'd work on soon. ;)
I can never tell what fields will be useful for a template and what won't. (Although I'm beginning to feel the 'Education' field in the character template is currently serving no purpose). :)
PS -> Is there an explanation for the /Image categories floating around somewhere? Those things are weird.
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 00:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
UPDATE - I wrote and inserted the buttons with my little temporary pictures. Feel free to change them as you feel like it, I'm not terribly attached to any of them. I put a character in a miner's helmet for Minor characters, a checkered flag for the "Race" template, and the Earth, as in "Earth-" for the Reality template. Nothing is final, and I'm not attached to any of it, so if there are problems you can rip those suckers right out. (Of course I'd like to know if it was my coding or whatever though). : )
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 00:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
You did fantastic! You are definitely getting the hang of this!
Um, those /image categories are populated by the Image Template; specifically the subject fields.
In future, I hope that we will be able to DYNAMICALLY build COMPLETE galleries of characters.
--Jamie 02:55, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Then, the galleries should be able to distinguish pictures focusing on a character and pictures featuring the character, as those things are different. Example: X-Men is the main focus on this image. However, Jean Grey is also pictured, but that doesn't necessarily mean that this picture should be placed in Jean Grey's gallery. The Clever Guy (TalkContribsE-Mail) 05:57, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
I was under the impression that it would allow users to link ALL pictures (regardless of universe) to "Jean Grey". So on the Image Template for the picture all one would have to do is choose subject = Jean Grey, James Howlett, Lucas Bishop, Remy LeBeau, etc...and then the image would link to those pages and we could put a code in the disambig page that would display a link or images listed for that character. That way when you choose Jean Grey you see ALL pictures and when you choose Jean Grey (Earth-616), you get the manually displayed gallery. But that was my thought...not sure if this is really the case or not. And actually after just playing with it. You could list out the characters with their Earth-designations. When you click on Wolverine's "(Image)" link on this page, you get Category:Wolverine/Images, which is an easily viewed gallery of the images we have of "Wolverine" or Jean Grey (Earth-616). These would only apply to those that are in the subject = sections of the image template though. --M1shawhan 00:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
My intent was to show ALL images of John Doe (Earth-123) that can be found on the entire database, regardless of whether it is their shoulder or if they are the sole character shown. I believe there are many reasons for this; taxonomy of the images and for character reference being two off the top of my head.
I figured that in order to make pretty portfolio-like galleries, it would require a more human touch.
It gives folks like Halley and Copycat, who really enjoy working with images and galleries, something to play with.
Both would co-exist. Automated galleries organizing our images and more stylized galleries showcasing our BEST and most representative images of each given character/team/location, etc.
Although I like images, I find my time is better spent developing templates or in a pinch, adding raw textual content.
Not all contributors enjoy the same aspect of our website. I want to make it fun for everyone; not just us historians! ;)
Do you think I am approaching the image galleries incorrectly?
--Jamie 05:16, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
I wouldn't say that my issues with the image galleries is the wrong approach, just more overwhelming. I guess my thoughts on the idea at first were not liking it because it was more than what I had gotten used to (the stylized galleries). I thought that the "new" image galleries was the exact same thing and I didn't see a need for it. Now that I have played with it, I am almost more inclined to use the image one than the stylized one as it is pretty much the same thing, but with less accuracy and coordination. I am fine with both, I am thinking of it from a personal standpoint and trying to see it from the standpoint of a newbie. "WE" know what is where and where to look, but newbies may be like HUH?...Overall, I could care less as long as the images are somewhere, which was my original problem with the images. Now that we have the template, it is better (though I think it should be somehow regulated and enforced). Maybe we can setup a layman's process to adding pictures to the site. --M1shawhan 00:02, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
We definitely need something.
The most ideal 'something' is to have the image template auto-populated during the upload process rather than 'upload, then edit, then insert template, fill it in, save image again'.
Pain in the butt, no matter if you are a newb or a pro. :(
All these things in good time... I hope we can work around these 'bugs' for a few more months.
A lot of fun stuff is coming down, I hope some of it saves us more effort.
All I can say is: Remember when we did this ... before templates??? :)
--Jamie 05:26, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

All that and I forgot what I came here for. . .

Do you know what's up with this image? I uploaded it twice, then cropped it and reuploaded it to no avail. I can't see it on either of my browsers. :( --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 00:24, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry dude, works for me. :)
Try clearing your browser cache. (Ctrl-F5 or Ctrl-R)
--Jamie 02:56, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Well good morning to you too! :)

I'm just trying to soak it up while my classes don't require too much of my time. What you need is an excellent government job where they don't have much for you to do. (That's where I do most of my edits). Plus, I'm pretty sure that PeteparkerBot is going to surpass us all. I'm still surprised he hasn't passed me already! What do you think about vehicle and item buttons? I can't think of an image for the item one. I was thinking of this for the Vehicle button. Opinions? :) Has the little guy started taking long enough naps that you're back to the computer these days? I do see you on here quite a bit more these days. --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:10, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, It's a little out there, but maybe you can come up with a better button in the future. I went with an eye as in, 'Eye'tem. I know it's a stretch, but I'm out of ideas and would like to utilize the button. (Though I bet it won't be up till tomorrow).
--Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 17:39, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Those images look great. Maybe we'll change them. Maybe we won't need to. :)
I have had a bit more time than I did 3 months ago... but I hope to get back to my 'old self' within another 3 or 4 months.
The project seems to be rolling along nicely without me... It's like I am not needed any more. :(
Anywho, keep it up!
--Jamie 02:45, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Oh where oh where did my template buttons go. . . Oh where oh where can they be?

Seriously, though what's gotta be done to bring those little suckers back? --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 21:52, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hooray! They're back!

Article Request

Hola Jamie

The Red Hulk

Should the Red Hulk's page be created abd if so can you see if you can find any good pictures of the Red Hulk? The Hulkster 00:43, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

New Skin!!

Love the new skin...could it be possible to move the Wolverine picture...I only got a glimpse of it before the stupid google ads and stuff covered it... :(

I think it is AWESOME though...kinda scared me though when all a sudden my screen changed. LOL! --M1shawhan 03:19, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I like it... but I think Spider-Man is more iconic for Marvel than Wolverine. The Clever Guy Talk 16:27, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Broken sidebar link

When using the oh-so-fantastic new Monaco skin, the "what links here" link is static, always pointing to Special:Whatlinkshere/Special:Recentchangeslinked (it works just fine in Monobook). I don't know what MediaWiki page that stuff is in, otherwise I'd try to be a bit more helpful than "hey, fix this". :) EVula // talk // 16:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Found the page: MediaWiki:Monaco-toolbox. However, I think its problems are universal; it's linking to a seemingly random page, and I noticed the same behavior on Wookieepedia. EVula // talk // 22:44, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

New gallery template

See this thread on the forums when you have some free time. The Clever Guy Talk 09:58, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Jamie,

Just wanted to show you a break that you've probably already seen. It's only been around for two days or so, but it's on both sites. --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 20:36, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Any Idea who that is? I couldn't find any info googling, and you're the only contributor. I was trying to nail down the Earth Desig. --Your Friendly Neighborhood Peteparker (talkcontribsemail) 23:05, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

How about w:c:transformers:Air RaidAir Raid? (Same deal)
How about Apex?

Description vs. Summary

In the Image Template, what data belongs in Description and what belongs in Summary? --Artful Dodger 03:50, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Jamie, I'm Playsonic2. I edit in a lot of spanish wikis from wikia. I have a question about the spanish Marvel Database. ¿Is there someone to help in that wiki ? I'm thinking in help, because I saw it and it was a little abandoned... Well, I'm waiting for your answer about this proyect :D Playsonic2 • ¡Speak! • 19:16, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Nice Job

Sweet looking Main page changes. I was hoping it was gonna be easy here. I can see some possible problems with the minor characters being transcluded on the disambig pages if they also transclude the ad, but I'm hoping it doesn't end up that way. Do you think we should increase the size of the info boxes since the add will be 300px wide? Your mastery of layout continues to amaze me. :)

Did you see comicvine's new upgrades? Pretty amazing. Good thing they're running amazingly slow now.

--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 01:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

I know the logos will have to be revisited, and If you're planning on continuing with the word bubble logo, I made one for the entertainment Marvel disambig you might like:
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 16:11, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Hey Jamie,
Since the changes went through this morning, I went ahead and changed the Wiki.png to this one until you revert it or change it again later. The one we had has a few flecks of white around the outside of the bubble, so it ended up looking a bit shotty. My feelings won't be hurt if you revert or change it, just thought it'd be a more professional temporary fix. :)
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 12:42, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
I'll get my graphic designer to rework something more polished. Yours are great for now. :)
--Jamie 17:53, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

main page

saw you working on the mainpage's layout. thought this would be something you could handle. Special:ProblemReports/10708 --Uberfuzzy 17:21, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Turns out the link was there, but gets hidden behind the right-hand pane if your browser squishes it.
Minor design for now... better solution later. ;)

Main pages

Hey Jamie!

Really nice work on the main page on Marvel. Did you want me to mimic the same change over on DC, or were you still developing it?

--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 17:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

I went ahead and mimicked the changes on this sandbox page, so if you'd like it the same way, it's there to copy and paste! :)
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 18:56, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
It looks like the ads were turned on on DC, so I went ahead with the changes. Sorry I couldn't wait. :)
I also did the same to the Image Database, and I'm looking at the Dark Horse one next. There's basically been no one at the Image one for the past month or so.
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 14:56, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Totally cool!
Thanks for implementing that!
Yes, I would have said go ahead.
I have been meaning to do it myself.
How has your position with Wikia been going?
--Jamie 03:07, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Really great! Thanks for asking. I'm learning a lot more of the layout and design stuff that you usually handle here and on DC. It's pretty cool to understand all the stuff that makes up the Main Page now. Heh heh heh. I really enjoy getting to work with so many different wikis, meeting different people and seeing how they attack the same problems. The only part that I don't absolutely love is adding content to things I don't know much about. When I do that, it feels like my text is borderline wrong and someone will call me on it very soon. And adding content about Merchandise is not very interesting to me. But what can ya do, it is a job, after all. :)
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 21:35, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I need a bot file

Jamie, I am ready to enter the wonderful world of bots. According to Nathan's helpful tutorial (and his straight-from-the-horse's-mouth words), I need a file from you to get started. Could you send it to me please?
Artful Dodger 02:50, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

If you can email me at Jamie [@] Marvel Database [dot] com, I will reply to you with the file that I use...
--Jamie 20:41, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Jamie! Check this out, and leave your opinion. The more people that say they want it, the more likely we'll get it! :)

--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 22:28, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

That is a lot of reading!
I have long been in direct contact with Wikia's CEO and VP of Ops, so they know my opinions on the ads... hahaha.
I try to be flexible and reasonable, to a point, with the understanding that they are a business and are providing us a service free of charge.
I am confident that NOTHING is written in stone and we will continue to try new things until the right mixture is found.
If you need anything from me, specifically, let me know...
I am always glad to help out where I can.
--Jamie 23:48, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Image Comics Database

Hey Jamie!

I've become the only really active admin on the Image Comics Wiki, and I'd like to change it around to become a sister site of Marvel and DC. I know you had attempted to contact the former Admin to do this some time ago, so I figured you were planning on getting to this one day.

Do you think you could help me develop a skin for that site that would reflect the awesomeness of these two?

I'm sure the Dark Horse Database would like to become our partner as well, but I'm not the only active admin over there, and Jet'ika (The main admin) and I just tweaked the skin and logo last week. (I should have been thinking ahead, and developed it to be more like these two). What do you think of the addition of two more official sister sites?

--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 21:30, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, of course, I'd love them to become a part of our 'Database Project'. :)
If they come into the project, I can get some skins made up for them, some ad promotion, and other benefits of joining the family.
I'd imagine we should get some more content first though.
Perhaps near the end of summer for the new skin?
--Jamie 03:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Sweet! I just happened to read this after I updated the skins and logos in those other two. Jet'ika is very excited to belong to one big happy family. Let me know what you think of the skins, I tried to make them similar to their parent sites' respectively. ( and
It'd be really cool to get those two involved on the forums and maybe in community on the sidebar. Just to make sure that people visiting here and DC know they exist. :)
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 04:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah, and one more thing, (Sorry for three consecutive messages in a row), I was thinking that we, as in the collective comics wikis, could benefit from a small wiki hub that could house our templates. At least the ones we use on both sites. That way, we could write the code so that it distinguishes between what wiki it's being used on, and respond accordingly. That would also save about a million little headaches when it comes to updating the templates on the other side, (or sides, if we take on the two other sister sites). I'm putting together a message to my contact at Wikia, to see if it's something they could put together, but I wanted to get your opinion before I really went through with it. Who knows, they might just say that it's impossible, or coding for different wikis on the same template might turn out to be more of a nightmare than the way it is now. . . Any opinions?
--Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talkcontribsemail) 21:40, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Interwiki Templating already exists. In fact, it is a core feature of the software.
Problem: It is poorly implemented and even the developers say it's crappy.
I don't think Wikia will turn it on. If they do, it will have to be after the code is fixed up.
Perhaps I can look into this some more... and ask super-politely to have the devs improve the code.
That is the only reason I didn't implement it at the time I first launched the DCDP nearly 3 years ago.
(I have known about it this whole time...)
For now, let's keep rolling forward with our standard procedures, I guess...
--Jamie 03:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I probed a little as to why this doesn't get implemented anywhere, and from what I was told, there are major worries about things getting too complicated for new users to come in and take over. The point that was made was: What if the people who understand how this alternate template wiki works with the others are suddenly gone, how do new people figure out how to change the templates? I thought it was an interesting viewpoint, something that I never seem to consider.
On with the standard procedures. :)
