The Vario-Mold Matrix was designed by Mordius to analyze and replicate the Iron Man Armor: equipped with all necessary raw materials, a complete analysis and duplication of the golden avenger's fabulous armor could be obtained in minutes. The device had developed three duplicated suits of armor before it was destroyed by Iron Man.
The duplicate armor had been flawed, however. Iron Man had applied a "refractory coating" to his armor which had corrupted the analyzed design, causing the duplicate armor to malfunction. Additionally, the color scheme had been identical to the original, leaving Mordius's other men unable to aid those in armor due to confusion in the ensuing fight. Since the odds were against him, Mordius destroyed them with a rocket cannon, hoping to remove the benefit of the Iron Man Armor from both sides.[1]
