During the Hyborian Age, the "Southern Ocean" designated the ocean east of the Black Kingdoms and south of Vendhya, and thus was seemingly the name then for the modern Indian Ocean. It was also known as the Vendhyan Sea or the Southern Sea., Iranistan, Kosala, Vendhya, Uttara Kuru, and Kambuja.

The Misty Isles were a chain of islands located off the coast of Vendhya (of which they are presumed to be a part of), in the Far East, while the Islands of Pearl were isles off the coast of Iranistan, and inhabited by the Gwadiri.

The Southern Ocean gave way to the Western Ocean at the Cape of Dark Dreams, and to the Eastern Ocean after the isles southeast of Vendhya.²
