History
Victorum Mountain is a Latverian peak in a range to the northwest of the city of Doomstadt,[2] where the official office of the country's ruler, Castle Doom, is. Victorum Mountain is quite close to the Castle and could be reached in little time, especially in a vehicle - either a jeep, a truck or a tank.[1] It had several big caverns, a number of which were hardly visited.[1][2]
When Doctor Doom was deposed as ruler of Latveria by Prince Zorba, an underground movement of Doom Loyalist rose, and they established a secret based in a hidden cavern on Victorum Mountain.[1][2] The base was well supplied with a large array of advanced machinery[2] that included at least one generator, life-support systems, neural probes, an operating table, anesthesia, a way to obtain ionized energy, and Doom's personal flying device, along with a well-trained staff commanded by Lt. Borgo, formerly Doom's personal First Lieutenant. The location of the base was a well-kept secret.[1]
Criminal scientist Gert Hauptmann, secretly a Doom Loyalist, had infiltrated in Castle Doom purportedly working for Zorba to monitor catatonic Doom's vital signs. Hauptmann had told Borgo that Doom had trained him in a procedure that could restore Doom's mind; but Hauptmann would need access to some technology (already available in the Victorum base), to Doom's body (which was kept in a padded cell by Zorba) and to Doom's armor (which Zorba kept in the dungeons).[1] Doom's body was snatched away by a team including reluctant but faithful Loyalist Boris Karela, in collusion with Hauptmann, and replaced with a robot.[1][2] Doom was taken to the cavern in a horsedrawn dray[1] that was received by Karela,[2] and the Loyalists immediately connected Doom to a large array of life-support devices to keep him alive. Zorba did not take long to discover the deception; and Hauptmann, fired from the Castle for his ineptitude, rushed to Victorum to warn the Loyalists.[1][2] Borgo warned Hauptmann for his carelessness, should Hauptmann had been followed; but he understood that Hauptmann was strictly needed for his plans to restore Doom.[1]
The Loyalists immediately launched an operation to break into the Castle and steal the Armor.[1][2] Borgo, Strego and a third man sneaked in[1] and succeeded in stealing the armor, but one of the men was captured. Zorba arranged for his prisoner,[1][2] Strego,[1] to escape easily, so that he could be tracked to the secret base.[1][2] Zorba's advisor Starn arranged for Strego to be transported in an ambulance, unlocked and unwatched, but driven by a spy, Agent-Z, who'd follow Strego through the wilds without him noticing. Agent-Z found Strego entering a cave in Victorum and reported to the Castle via walkie-talkie; by then, Zorba had troops and tanks ready to attack the encampment.[1]
Meanwhile, Hauptmann returned Doom's mind to his usual. Strego entered the cave, and Borgo immediately reported that the man had been apprehended; both Borgo and Doom understood that Zorba had released Strego to follow him. Doom executed Strego in sight for his mistake; but it took mere moments for Zorba's army to start the attack on the cave. Borgo wanted his men to risk their lives for their master, yet Doom required no protection at all:[1] He used his armor's systems and his extraordinary skills to destroy the enemy's war machines and scatter the soldiers.[1][2] Zorba himself escaped while Starn compared Doom with the devil. The Loyalists cheered Doom on his victory, while also listening to his commands:[1] Doom obviously ordered his people to move the compromised base to a new location, and to spread the word of his return. Doom then flew off on his flying machine.[1][2] During his exile, Doom used several other locations as temporary refuge, but the Victorum Mountain base was apparently abandoned for good.[2]Residents
