Von Kropp, the so-called "Phantom of the Air", was a member of the Nazis during World War II. In the summer of 1943, he led a group of his fellow Nazis to capture a remote weather observation outpost located in Greenland. There, they radioed false weather reports to the Allied Forces while providing the true reports to his comrades in Nazi Germany. On days where the weather was supposedly too bad for flying, the Allied Forces would find themselves attacked by Nazi fighter planes. This was all part of a plot for the Nazis to invade Greenland and Iceland.

The plot was figured out by the Sub-Mariner upon hearing about a nearly empty Nazi bomber (the one responsible for air dropping Von Kropp and his men) being shot down in Greenland and learning where the Allied Weather reports came from. Travelling to the weather station, the Sub-Mariner was captured by Von Kropp and his men and encased in a block of ice. However, before they could begin their invasion plans, the Sub-Mariner broke free and knocked out Von Kropp and his men and warned the Allies. Allied Forces then prevented the invasion of Greenland and Iceland.[1]

Von Kropp's subsequent fate is unknown.
