The Wappinger were a tribe of Native Americans who lived on the east coast of North America in a region that would one day be Westchester County, New York.

The land where the Ravencroft Institute was built had been seen as cursed by the local indigenous tribes since before the 15th century, having been claimed as the territory of a cannibalistic cult that worshiped the dark god Knull.[1]

A Wappinger shaman cursed another piece of land in New York to bind the chaos-entity Tyanon to that place and bar her full access to Earth.[2] The site continued to serve as a place for arcane Native American Indian rituals.[3] Shamans of the Wappinger tribe were known to journey there for vision quests.[4]

In the 17th century, the English began settling in the region and the Wappinger tried to warn them not to build there; however construction begana single wooden cell constructed in 1664 to house Cortland Kasady, a settler who had been driven insane by the cult and become a murderous cannibal.[1]
