History
Ward is a robot, or "synthetic person" as he prefers to be called, created to investigate the nature of the soul. He started mingling with humans to research them, looking for people from all walks of life. At the diner Marvel Gas, Ward caught the attention of a group of human supremacists who almost beat him up until a man named John Cray intervened. The pair moved to a different diner, Route 66 Burger, but they had been ratted out by the supremacists to the Sapien League, who then attacked them at the diner. Cray was injured by the terrorists, and when Ward was at their mercy, the Soul Stone made landfall and bound itself to him, with the resulting energy charge taking down his attackers.
After wrestling back control of his body from the Soul Stone, Ward attempted to leave to take Cray to a hospital, but he was approached by Iron Man and Captain America. The Soul Stone took control of Ward's body again and manifested soul constructs to fight the two heroes, proclaiming to have become Multitude. Although Ward helped the Soul Stone strategize against Iron Man and Captain America, he convinced the Soul Stone to trade his own escape in exchange for letting the heroes tend to Cray. The Soul Stone then set out to find the rest of the Infinity Stones to discover what would happen when they're brought back together.[3]
While exploring the meaning of soul, Multitude was confronted by Mantis and Gamora. The two Guardians of the Galaxy wished to claim the soul of Arthur Douglas from the Soul Stone, but Multitude refused to give it to them, as he saw Arthur's soul as beautiful and essential to understanding the nature of the soul. He sent simulacrums of those who previously had their souls contained inside the Stone to attack the two women, though he later stopped after Douglas convinced Multitude to relinquish his soul to them. As gratitude for giving them Douglas' soul, Mantis gave Multitude some Mysterium to use as currency.[4]Attributes
