Synopsis for "The Appeal"
Infinity petitions the Living Tribunal to reconsider the case of the Infinity Watch, attempting to show that they are too incompetent and disfunctional to be trusted with the Infinity Gems. After reviewing Gamora's, Pip's, Moondragon's, and Drax's backstories and speaking in vague terms about the Reality Gem's guardian, the Tribunal concludes that Warlock's choices were acceptable and Infinity is sent off forced to accept the current situation as it is.
Notes
- Gamora's origin retold here differs slightly from what was originally described in Warlock #10. Originally, it was the Magus' Universal Church of Truth that slaughtered her people. In this version, it's the Badoon. The reasoning appears to be that the timeline of the Universal Church was erased in Warlock #11 requiring a different perpetrator in her story, though as explained at the end of that issue, Gamora's presence at the epicenter of the temporal rearrangement made her immune to its effects, leaving her as a refugee of the erased timeline. This era of comics uses the "Badoon" origin to ostensibly simplify her situation, suggesting that this is an "Earth-616" version of the original Gamora of Earth-7528, but going forward there is uncertainty over which of her origins is considered canon at a given time.
- The Tribunal turns Eternity down on Gamora, because the Time Gem should not be used without the other Gems thus Gamora was the right Choice, because she doesn't know how to use it anyway (as Eternity himself said) but is however very capable of protecting it.
- As Pip can only use the Gem for basic teleportation, he is deemed a suitable protector because being a coward he would always teleport away from Danger thus Eternity is turned down on him, too.
- Tribunal stops Eternity before he can tell him who is the Protector of the Reality Gem because his history is well known to the Tribunal but he turns Eternity down on him as well because Warlock chose him while he was omnipotent and because only few would dare wrest the Gem from him.
- The reasons why Drax and Moondragon are suitable Guardians in the eyes of the Tribunal are not entirely clear, all in all Eternity is being turned down because he is motivated by his own desires.
