Most Atlanteans can only survive out of water for about 10 minutes without artificial aid.[5] Therefore, when an Atlantean ventures into the surface world, they wear a sealed bubble helmet that covers their head and neck-gills. The helmet is designed to enable the wearer to see and breath normally. A small cylindrical backpack recycles and renews the water. The system enables the wearer to stay away from the water for days before they suffer ill effects.
