The Way-Opener was the ship of Gabriel Lan and Pyreus Kril back when they were in the Nova Corps.[1]

History

The Way-Opener was the oldest, smallest, and most-repaired ship in Xandar's fleet. This explorer ship was infamously given to people with ruined careers until the decorated Xandarian war hero Gabriel Lan, a Nova Centurion, personally chose it to command. He was given a small but dedicated crew, which included Cortellia, an admiral's daughter. A young man named Pyreus Kril, who deeply admired Lan, asked to join and Lan accepted. The two became close, and Kril became Lan's first officer.[1]

When Gabriel Lan was suddenly abducted by Galactus, Pyreus took over and dedicated himself and the crew in hunting Galactus down, despite the orders from Xandar's space command to stand down. He eventually found the Devourer but the ship was destroyed and the other crew members evacuated.[1] Pyreus teleported aboard Galactus' ship and demanded him to return Gabriel, but Gabriel was dead and had been turned into Galactus' Herald, the Air-Walker. Looking for a new Herald and impressed with Pyreus, Galactus turned Pyreus into his next Herald, the Firelord.[2]
