Apache Kid #53

Apache Kid is chasing Bulge Lister and his gang across the desert. However, the outlaws get the upper hand by shooting Apache Kid's pony and leaving him to die of thirst in the desert. However, the Apache Kid is not easily defeated and manages to find a watering hole where he spies a black stallion and his mares. When the black stallion is attacked by rattle snakes, the Kid kills them and then treats the horse for poison. The horse decides to let Apache Kid ride him and the hero dubs the new horse Night-Wind.

However, Bulge and his men spot the horses trails and realize that the Apache Kid might be still alive and follows their trail. They find Night-Wind alone and steal the horse. When Apache Kid learns he fears that the outlaws might find his Aloysius Kare clothing and learn his double identity and follows after them.

Meanwhile, Bulge and his men come across a band of Native Americans led by Old Toad who demands that they hand over Night-Wind, who has stolen their mares so that they can kill the horse, which they believe is possessed by a devil. With no choice, Bulge and his men turn the horse over but plot to steal it again so they can sell it for a hefty profit. As Old Toad's medicine man performs a ritual, the Natives are gunned down before Old Toad can kill Night-Wind. When Bulge and his men try to ride off with the horse they find it unwilling to cooperate.

Apache Kid arrives just as Bulge is trying to whip the horse into submission and while Bulge is distracted by the arrival of Apache Kid, Night-Wind tramples him to death. Regaining his horse, Apache Kid finds that Bulge's minions have no desire to fight and they surrender to him.

Although they are outnumbered they manage to force the Mexican forces to pull back. This is only a minor reprieve and without reinforcements they are doomed to lose the battle, and so Soapy is sent to the nearby fort to get more men. With another attack looming and morale low, Billy tells the captain that he will go an see what he can spy from the enemy lines.

Sneaking out into enemy lines Billy slips past sentries that are put in place, and manages to sneak right up to a quarter tent. There he overhears the commanding officers of the Mexican forces plotting to bring a cannon up to a higher ground and blasting the American soldiers while they sleep. Billy rushes back to camp where he informs the captain of what they are planning and offers a solution.

That night as the Mexican forces go up a path to where they plan to use their cannon, the American troops push the trees around them surrounding the enemy and forcing them to surrender. By the time Soapy arrives with reinforcements, Billy and the other soldiers have all the Mexicans as prisoners. When the soldiers go back to the fort to throw a celebration for Billy, the young scout opts to slip out quietly with Soapy, thinking a celebration is too much commotion.

Synopsis for "Stampede of the Longhorns!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Western Kid #5

The Western Kid, his horse Whirlwind and dog Lightning pass by the old man Hasting's spread and witness the elderly cripple and his family being pressured by their ranch hand, Bart Carter, to give him half the profits from the sale of cattle he has been hired to move. Carter has also demanded that Hasting allow him to marry his granddaughter Marcia. Despite the fact that she loves Pete Lane, Marcia is willing to go through with the deal in order to save her father from losing money on his cattle. With Hastings being forced to agree to the deal, the Western Kid tells the old man that he will try to do something to get the old man out of his situation, however Carter warns his men to be vigilant as he suspects that Tex Dawson will try something.

Tex first rides over to Pete Lane's home and tells him to go and keep an eye on Marcia while he handles the situation. As the Kid rides off he suspects that greedy Bart Carter will try to find a way to claim all the profits from the sale of cattle and will attempt to change the branding on the cattle to his own. To try and catch him in this act, the Western Kid attempts to start a stampede of the longhorns, but is knocked out by Carter and his men. When Tex comes around he finds himself and Whirlwind tied up and Lightning missing, presumed dead in the stampede. However, Lightning survived and while Carter and his men prepare to rebrand one of the cattle, Lightning attacks while Whirlwind chews through his master's bonds. He then makes short work of Carter and his men, turn them over to the authorities and sells the cattle for Hasting. He then returns to the Hasting's ranch with the full amount of money. While Mr. Hasting is happy to have his money, Marcia in turn agrees to marry Pete Lane.

Reprint of the 5th story from
Black Rider #23

Ben Owen has been shot outside of town, his body is brought to the medical practice of Dr. Matthew Masters who declares him dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. The men who brought him tell Masters he was shot outside of Devil's Spit and his gun was still holstered, suggesting that Owen was shot by somebody he knew. They only evidence as to the identity of the killer was a single black glove that was left on Ben's chest. After the men leave, Masters changes into the Black Rider and goes to speak to Owen's widow in order to find out who could have killed her husband. She tells him the only man who could have hated her husband was Maynard Murrel who was sentenced and hung five years earlier thanks to a jury verdict that Ben participated in. When the Black Rider shows her the glove found at the murder scene she does not recognize it.

Meanwhile, at the home of Judge Elmer Higgins, Maynard Murrel appears before the judge who sentenced him to death. Higgins is surprised that Murrel is still alive and is shot dead. The body is found moments later by the Black Rider who had come to learn more about Murrel and he finds another trademark black glove at the scene. The Black Rider is surprised by the sudden arrival of Jim Lathrop who also became interested in the situation after hearing Ben Owen was shot. The Rider learns from Jim that Judge Higgins was the one who sentenced Murrel to hang.

As they leave the judge's house a local tells them that the entire town is under siege by the apparent ghost of Maynard Murrel. The Black Rider tracks Murrel to the Golden Angel Saloon where he is keeping people hostage with a bomb. The Black Rider subdues Murrel and tosses the bomb outside a window where it harmlessly explodes. However, Murrel struggles free and escapes. Curious if this is the real Murrel, the Black Rider goes to the local graveyard and digs up his grave to find it empty. The Black Rider and Jim are shot at by Murrel but they send him fleeing again.

They then question the caretaker of the graveyard who explains that five years ago when he was instructed to bury Murrel, Murrel wasn't dead. Murrel then forced him to bury an empty coffin and keep the existence of his survival a secret. Just then, Murrel bursts into the room intending kill the grounds keeper, but the Black Rider is a faster draw and shoots Murrel, killing him for good. They then bury Murrel in his grave, marking it as the only man in Leadville history who has died twice.
