Synopsis for "Poison Arrow!"
Apache Kid #13
Going to the local Apache Tribe to take part in a council meeting the Apache Kid is shocked when Wampou has decreed that the Kid is to die under orders from Poison Arrow a being who has claimed to be a messenger from the gods. The Apache Kid is subdued and is taken to a nearby mountain to be attacked and killed by the vengeful eagles that live there, swearing on his life that he will not leave there.
The Apache Kid complies at least partially, changing into his alter ego of Aloysius Kare in order to slip away so he can confront Poison Arrow and learn if the claims that he is a messenger of the gods are true or not. When he runs into Wampou, Aloysius tells him that the Apache Kid has been killed by the eagles. When Wampou leaves, Kare follows him to his rendezvous with Poison Arrow. However, Poison Arrow has spotted Aloysius following after Wampou and attacks both of them with poisoned arrows. When Wampou is struck with one of the arrows, Kare saves his life and sends him off on Nightwind to get medical treatment.
Getting under cover, Kare changes back into the Apache Kid and confronts Poison Arrow. The two fight it out hand to hand with the Apache Kid the victor. However with the approach of the Apaches with Wampu, Poison Arrow points out that when they see the Apache Kid there he will be killed for betraying his promise to stay on the mountain. The Kid runs away just as Wampu and the others arrive and Poison Arrow tells them about Apache Kid's betrayal and convinces them to follow him on a hunt for the Apache Kid. They follow his trail finding Aloysius Kare instead who tells Poison Arrow that he will have to fight him in order to get to the Apache Kid.
Poison Arrow fires one of his poisoned arrows at Kare, who easily shoots it out of the air then throws Poison Arrow off his horse. Ironically, Poison Arrow lands on his own poisoned weapon and facing imminent death reveals that he is fraud and that he wanted to remove Apache Kid as he was the only person who stood in his way to taking over the tribe and going to war against the white settlers in the area. Kare leaves and returns as the Apache Kid who is welcomed back by his people and Wampu apologizes having realizing the errors of his ways.

Finding this suspicious the Kid pretends to flee, planning to come back and see what the wanted man is up to. The man reports back to his boss, Verne Carter who is suspicious that the Western Kid may be onto the fact that they recently robbed a stage. She decides to take the Kid as a hostage so that they can slip out of the state. However, during a private meeting Verne's minions believe that she has grown soft and begin plotting taking over.
However, by this time Tex Dawson and his animal pals have doubled back and surround the outlaws and attack. Despite gaining the upper hand in the fight, Tex is forced to stand down when Verne gets the drop on him. Tex, his dog Lightning and horse Whirlwind are all tied up. However as they bide their time, Lightning chews through his bonds and reveals this to Tex after dark. He then orders Lightning to free Whirlwind while he works at his own bonds and then they all pretend to still be tied up, waiting to strike at the right time. Suddenly, Verne arrives to free Tex, having had a change of heart and suspecting that her minions might soon turn on her.
However, Verne's minions try to make their attack, but Tex fights back. Out numbered, Tex and Verne mount on Whirlwind and make a break for it. They manage to escape the outlaws by jumping over a gorge, but Verne realizes that they left the loot behind. But is put back at ease when Tex shows her that Lightning recovered the stolen money. They then head back into town to alert the law about Verne's men, Tex assuring that the law will go easy on her for surrendering and returning the stolen loot.

Black Rider #23
Bulldog Barnes and his gang rob a stage outside of Leadville, but when he orders Lanny Kimball to kill everyone aboard the coach, Lanny refuses to be party to murder. Bulldog guns down Kimball and he and his men flee just as the Black Rider arrives. Learning what happened from the survivors, the Black Rider takes Lanny's unconscious body and takes him to the Lathrop ranch where he tells Marie to bring the injured man to the medical practice of his alter-ego Matthew Masters.
The Black Rider races back to Leadville where he changes into his other identity just moments before Marie arrives and asks him to return to her family ranch. There Matthew and Marie perform the delicate surgery to remove the bullets from Lanny's shoulder. The next day the sheriff comes in to arrest Lanny, but Masters sends him away, refusing to release a wounded man under his care. Coming out of his coma, Lanny overhears Masters defending him and sending the sheriff away and thanks the doctor for his help.
A few weeks later while Lanny is still healing and Masters is away from the Lathrop ranch, one of Bulldog's men pays a visit pretending to be a friend coming to see how Lanny is doing. The man talks privately with Lanny and tells him that Bulldog is willing to forgive his insubordination is Lanny agrees to help them ambush the Black Rider. Lanny refuses to help and sends the man away and then tells Marie he has to leave. The next day Marie tells Matthew Masters what happened the night before and expresses concern for Lanny's well being.
Masters slips away and changes into the Black Rider and finds Lanny hiding out in town waiting to ambush Bulldog and his gang. Not wishing the boy to risk his life, the Black Rider knocks him out and wipes out the Bulldog gang on his own. In the aftermath of the battle, the Black Rider helps clear Lanny of any trouble with the law and helps him get a job as a ranch hand on the Lathrop ranch.
