Since Spider-Man joined the FF and Sue left to be with Namor, Reed and Johnny have done little to hide their bitterness and are frequently over-critical of Spidey in battle, driving him to eventually quit in frustration. Ben, disappointed with Reed's attitude, soon leaves as well. It's then that Namor arrives at the Baxter Building at Susan's behest to invite her friends for a visit. Reed and Johnny refuse to hear him and attack until Namor leaves, warning them that Atlantis is prepared to respond in kind to any more belligerence. Heedless, Reed and Johnny go to the UN with a doctored video of their conversation with Namor to make it look like Atlantis is on the verge of making a pre-emptive strike, but their warmongering is foiled when Ben shows up with the original footage. Still determined to get back at Namor, Reed and Johnny set out to invade Atlantis by themselves.

Reed finds Sue with her midwives and Namor catches up with a defeated Torch. Reed taunts Namor as the Ultra-Weapon starts to take effect by taking the Atlanteans' water-breathing and turning them into air-breathers, which will force a mass emigration to the surface world where Namor will no longer hold any power. Though he's convinced he can get Sue back this way, Dorma points out that she and her unborn child won't survive the shock of transition in this state. Reed gradually recognizes the horror of his actions and changes his mind, but before he can get to the Ultra-Weapon, Krang dies trying to turn it off himself. After Reed disables the device and the danger is past, he agrees to finally let Sue go, just as her and Namor's son is born. Johnny, however, is not ready to forgive, and swears he'll get his sister back no matter who stands in his way.
