Synopsis
After the mission to retake the Lemurian Star, Captain Peggy Carter and Natasha Romanoff had discovered a still-alive Steve Rogers inside the Hydra Stomper armor. Rogers had attacked them both and subsequently destroyed the vessel. During a briefing with Nick Fury, Romanoff had deduced that Rogers, missing since 1953, had been brainwashed by agents of the Red Room.
Carter and Romanoff had assisted Brock Rumlow in protecting Bucky Barnes, who was Rogers' next target, before managing to incapacitate Rogers. They had then traveled to a secret hideout in Scotland. Despite attempts to reboot the suit, it was keeping Rogers alive, albeit at a decreasing chance of survival with each activation.
At that time, Rogers had offered to aid Carter in taking down the Red Room, hoping to find a cure. Subsequently, he had escorted both Carter and Romanoff to a former KGB test site. However, an ambush by automated drones had threatened their survival until Rogers' brainwashing was reactivated by Melina Vostokoff. She had confessed to orchestrating earlier events. Carter had engaged in a fierce battle with Rogers while Romanoff had fought off Vostokoff's Black Widows.
In a pivotal moment, Carter had pleaded with Rogers to cease fighting, but he had stubbornly flown towards the Red Room, destroying it against her protests. Observing Rogers, Romanoff had fired her grappling hook, latching onto him and tying it to Vostokoff, resulting in her demise in the ensuing explosion.
Later, Carter, firmly convinced that Rogers was still alive, had resolved to find him. As she bid farewell to Romanoff, a portal unexpectedly opened beneath Carter's feet, transporting her to another universe. There, she had encountered renaissance-era versions of Fury and Wanda Maximoff.
