Synopsis for "What If? the Avengers Had Fought Galactus?"

Reed Richards' rocket crashed on Earth, killing all four crew members. Dr. Doom, lacking Richards as a target for his vengeance, became an ally of the West while strengthening his own nation. Namor remained an amnesiac homeless man in New York's bowery, and Captain America remained frozen in the ice in the Arctic. The Avengers formed to oppose Loki, and later, when the group reorganized, Iron Man remained the only founding member, joining Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch, and the quartet was later joined by Goliath and the Wasp.

As the Silver Surfer approached Earth, Uatu unsuccessfully attempted to shield the planet from discovery, then contacted the Avengers to explain the imminent threat of Galactus' arrival. Uatu also failed in efforts to dissuade Galactus from feeding on Earth, while the Avengers began to attack the world-devourer to no avail. The Avengers regrouped, adding Thor and his new ally Hercules to their number, and assaulted Galactus' elemental converter. As Galactus summoned the Punisher to drive off his attackers, Uatu dispatched Iron Man to Galactus' worldship to obtain the Ultimate Nullifer. The Hulk arrived to assist and helped destroy the Punisher, but Iron Man's armor set off alarms in Galactus' ship, causing defense mechanisms to activate, incapacitating him with energy blasts.

Meanwhile, the Avengers futilely battled against Galactus and the Silver Surfer, and defeat seemed certain. Realizing the one chance to save Earth, Uatu broke his oath of non-interference, fighting Galactus directly himself. Even Uatu's power was not enough against Galactus, who defeated him; Galactus then consumed the powerful energies of the Watcher, temporarily satiating his eternal hunger. Afterwards, Galactus returned Uatu to the Watcher's Homeworld, where he was burned at a funeral pyre. The Silver Surfer, intrigued by the fact that a Watcher would sacrifice his life for humanity, elected to remain on Earth, and Galactus released him from his vow.
