History

After the failure of the first Whiplash Harness, Ivan Vanko was broken out of prison to refine a series of Hammer battlesuits. While he was working on modifying the existing technology, he secretly turned some of Hammer's resources to the task of recreating his ionized plasma channel technology, this time melded with a large battlesuit of his own.

Vanko later surprised Tony Stark and James Rhodes by attacking them where the duo had earlier defeated a series of drone robots. Vanko easily subdued both of them in a few hits, thanks to his bulkier armor and powerful electric whips. However, the two armored heroes combined their repulsor blasts, creating a massive explosion. With his dying breath, Vanko activated explosive devices in the drones and his own armor.

Properties

Designed with the capabilities of Tony Stark's Iron Man suits in mind, the Whiplash Mark II was constructed to be immensely strong and durable, while gaining power from a miniature arc reactor of Vanko's own design. It possessed enough physical power to restrain both the Mark VI Iron Man and Mark I War Machine at once.

The Whiplash Mark II also bore the ionized plasma channel whips of its predecessor, however these were more advanced, having both a limited prehensile grip and a retraction reel system to draw them back in.

Flight technology designed to provide enough air speed to keep up with Iron Man allowed Vanko to quickly reach the scene of their final battle, but whether that capability was suitable for air combat was never tested.
