History
General Bridges was head of "the Cape," a NASA base where Captain Marvel worked under his guise of Walter Lawson.[1]
He was killed and replaced by a female Dire Wraith.[2]Notes
- The last confirmed appearance of the General Bridges who interacted with Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel was in Captain Marvel #12. This character's first name was never revealed in any of the nine issues in which he definitely appeared.
- Throughout those issues, the missile/rocket base commanded by General Bridges was only identified as "The Cape." There were no in-story references to it being Cape Kennedy (later Cape Canaveral) until Avengers #89. "The Cape" was first confirmed to be Cape Canaveral in Captain Marvel #40
- The entry on Dire Wraiths that appeared in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update #2 stated that "William Potter Bridges" was the full name of the General Bridges who was revealed in Avengers #245 to have been recently killed and replaced by a Dire Wraith. However, this name has never been confirmed by any in-story references.
- Similarly, although it is widely believed that writer Roger Stern meant for the General Bridges who was killed by the Dire Wraith to be the same person as the General Bridges from those early Captain Marvel stories, there has never been any in-story confirmation. Neither of the two Avengers issues in which Stern's general appeared contain any footnotes or other references to him being the same character. On the other hand, the fact that the murdered Bridges was brown-haired instead of grey-haired could have been an indication that they were different generals.
