History

William Hansen was a scientist working for Cybertek in the project to create a cyborg super-soldier, Deathlok, using the brain of donor John Kelly for storage purposes.[2] During a test run,[3] the computer onboard Deathlok electrocuted Kelly's brain, killing it[4] when it tried to override the computer and take over the cyborg body.[2] The Deathlok team identified the nature of the problem and tried to solve it by versioning the software and getting a new brain. As Kelly's brain was being discarded, literally thrown in the bin, Hansen asked for permission to get it and use it to experiment in his free time.[2] Following the Planarian experiment, Hansen hypothesized that memory was chemically stored in the organisms and was thus retrievable. Hansen wanted to resurrect Kelly's brain using nanotechnology: He got billions of assemblers and replicators (nanotech machines) on a suspension called stasis fluid, and programmed them to replace and repair Kelly's brain's organic cells, "one atom at a time". Hansen provided nutrients to the fluid, and programmed them to read Kelly's DNA from his cells, then replicate the brain. However, Hansen's experiment failed to show progress, and he discarded it, throwing it to a garbage dump. The experiment was working, only slower than Hansen had predicted, and the nanomachines in the brain thrived by absorbing organic matter around it, then replicating useful attributes of what they had eaten, and eventually becoming the sentient creature called Biohazard. Biohazard, having part of Kelly's mind, remembered Kelly's time as Deathlok and looked for more information on it, eventually concluding than Hansen had been Biohazard's and Deathlok's creator.[5]

By then, however, Cybertek's criminal activities had been exposed by the next Deathlok, Michael Collins (in whose creation Hansen had had a role). Hansen had been murdered by other Cybertek members, so as Hansen could not testify against them,[1] and buried in Brooklyn. Biohazard desecrated Hansen's grave, feeling a ting of gilt for disturbing its creator, then ingested Hansen's dead brain to absorb his memories. Biohazard then regurgitated a sentient clone of Hansen, apparently so as to have not only Hansen's memory, but also his intelligence.[6] Biohazard then hid inside the clone's body, and manipulated it so that the clone, unaware of Biohazard's presence, would go to Collins "to warn him about the danger of Biohazard", explaining what had happened; this was a ruse for Biohazard to have a chance to sneak into Collins' safe place and attack him by surprise. However, Collin's wife and sister-in-law noticed several inconsistencies in the clone's story (such as, why would Biohazard not absorb the clone once the later knew everything it wanted; or why would Biohazard let the clone go free to warn its enemy; or why would the clone want to warn Collins in the first place). Once discovered, Biohazard shed the clone to reveal himself.[5]

Attributes

Abilities

Apparently, the clone had the memories and intelligence of the original Billy Hansen; but was controlled by Biohazard and thus unable to infer the inconsistencies in his own past.[5]

Notes

  • Billy Hansen kept an unshaven chin until he died.[2][1] His clone had a full-grown goatee, and in the flashback scenes, we see Hansen with the goatee.[5]
  • Unlike the original Hansen, the clone wore a suit - apparently the clothing Hansen had been buried with.[6]
  • The clone seemed to be defective as he was frequently sweating and spurting some dark-colored liquid from his face.[5]
