Synopsis for "The Village That Walked Like a Woman"
Maureen Raven appears to Wisdom in a nightmare, blood-splattered and missing a face. Wisdom wakes on a military base in Pantagruel village in bed with his wife, and reports his nightmare to the base commander Jonathan Blatley, who explains the weapon they’re testing has no effect on the human brain but that the local villagers are being driven away. Meeting Maureen on the village green, Wisdom confirms she’s having bad dreams but that’s common for clairsentients. Meanwhile, Captain Midlands and John the Skrull attend a parish council meeting to hear the dreams of the residents. One begins to describe the war, but is interrupted by gunfire as a soldier opens fire by the cenotaph. A quick-thinking Wisdom removes the gunman’s hands, then from the military hospital Maureen uses the wound to enter his dream, finding a Sleeping Giant and experiencing the nightmares of her colleagues- except Tink.
As the dreams unfold the real-world effects intensify, and Pete Wisdom, accompanied by the ghost of his mother, confronts Blatley, who asks for his help defusing the weapon. Tink, whose fairy nature means she doesn’t dream, explains that Maureen, who is now broadcasting nightmares between orgasms, has become a conduit for the Sleeping Giant Pantagruel, but the nature of that relationship means Maureen will be able to calm her down. As the MI-13 team gather to think Pantagruel back to sleep, she rises explosively from the ground, as John the Skrull instructs her to wake in a fit of insecurity. Pantagruel rises from the earth, still bearing the village atop her head, but the golems set to guard her sleep rise with her and attack. The enraged Pantagruel battles and destroys the guardians, themselves bearing villages on their backs, which causes immense damage to the villages as MI-13 scramble to save the civilians. When Pantagruel demands to know whose side MI-13 are on, only Captain Midlands can put Pantagruel’s needs before those of the general populace, and as he compares her to meeting the Queen she carefully places the other villages back.
Pantagruel steps into the sea, and Wisdom reveals his plan- evacuate the remaining civilians and call in a missile strike on the giant. Maureen and the village Vicar convince him to think better of it, and the giant moves into international waters and beyond MI13’s jurisdiction. As Tink watches, Maureen and Wisdom share a moment, and the team leaves by helicopter as the parish council tries to adapt.
