Synopsis for "Identity Crisis"
As Kitty reflects by the X-Mansion's fountain, she is approached by and quickly dispatches Jamie Madrox, aka the Multiple Man. He explains that he is searching for a "runaway dupe", or a duplicate of himself that has gone rogue. Meanwhile, a second Multiple Man converses with Logan in the kitchen. This Jamie explains that he will possibly need to stay at the mansion while searching for the runaway. Just then, Kitty enters the kitchen with the real Jamie and the dupe previously engaged with Wolverine grabs a knife and cries out that reabsorbing him will be murder! After talking down the situation, Kitty manages to phase the dupe just before Jamie can reintegrate him. She lays out a plan for the pair to catch a train into Manhattan, but the duplicate knocks her out, insisting he mustn't drag her into his escape attempt.
Kitty is found in the woods by Logan and Jamie a little while later. She explains to the men what occurred and refuses to be left at the mansion when they head into Manhattan. Jamie shares his fears of having other versions of himself he feel responsible for scattered around the world during an argument with Kitty; conversely, the dupe is shown peacefully strolling through Central Park.
In a somewhat unrelated panel, Wolverine talks of the importance of paying for art while slashing through a scalper's script pile. The rogue duplicate spots the trio and bolts for the nearest taxi. Just as he hails one, the dupe is urged by a woman to save her daughter from a fire due to his superhero-like suit. He manages to get the girl to safety, but not before a roof collapse crushes him. Wolverine finishes the job by cutting his way into the inferno and passing the girl to a phased Kitty who escorts her from the scene. As the fire dies, Jamie gently takes the dupe's hand and reabsorbs him to ease his final moments. Realizing that Wolverine was correct in saying Jamie needed to know more about himself, he sends four of his duplicates into the world to do "the best they can."
